Been using Hitfilm Express since 2018-2020. Took a break from editing only to see the absolute nightmare it's become. What's worse is that I bought some addons prior to the new revamp and most of the features that I BAUGHT, have to be paid for again.
Not sure if this applies, but I still use the old hitfilm because I had the installer on my PC and it works! So you may be able to still use your add ons.
Thanks for this video, I've been waiting to use Hitfilm for a while, and I've just recently finished the script for the video, thanks for the time save, I'll just get DaVinci Resolve.
It's odd because I've been using Hitfilm Express since like 2017. I've made every one of my videos with it, and I've been complacent with all the jank. Even after Express went away, I didn't really notice a difference... But it's always had a crashing problem, slow loading times, and especially wacky rendering, importing, and exporting. Wasn't sure if it was my specs that couldn't handle it or if the software was just slow, but after upgrading my computer specs, I've realized it's definitely the software. Thank you for the video because it's made me realize I need to swap software!
I used to use Hitfilm so much back in 2020; it was the first editor I used when I finally got a desktop and I loved it. I decided to redownload it today because I had a new project I wanted to start. I was really questioning whether I had downloaded a bootleg version of the program or not cause it was awful
I've always used Hitfilm and the older versions still hold up well. I wish I can still purchase more add ons for faster workflow. Considering switching since Hitfilm doesn't seem to be lasting too long :(
I discovered Express when I only needed to make mini school projects. Coming back to it years later to find express completely killed I was extremely confused. Glad this video exists
I started with hitfilm express, upgraded to pro earlier this year, and tbh I'm not really having any issues with the program. I'm probably just gonna ride it out until something happens with pro while I find another editor I'll be comfortable using.
I got HitFilm Pro 14 on a Humble Bundle for like 30 bucks. I use it to make green screen videos of my students every month for parents video report card, showing their child's speaking progress at my language school. No monthly fees. After going through the trouble of learning how to use it on UA-cam, I'm going to ride this software till the wheels fall off.
I don't know anything about film editing and have never used Hit Film, but this was a really interesting video and as someone currently in the cult of Adobe I can empathize :,)
It really sucks to know that HitFilm Express got butchered like this. When I found out about HitFilm Express like 2 years ago, it's one of the best free video editor that I've seen
I am so happy I wasn't "updating" back then (always waited a few months before a new updates because they needed quite some time for bugfixing) Still have Express where it worked really well with all the addons I bought and it runs with no restrictions. Will keep it as long as I can
When I started with UA-cam YEARS ago before I started this new channel, I started using windows movie maker. And then after like 2 years I upgraded to Hitfilm express. After that I quit uploading for a very long time. When I came back I started using movie maker again. Now I’m trying to get Hitfilm since they are the only editors I know and can afford since I’m broke 😂. Praying to be able to use better ones in the future 🙏🏻
I started video editing using sony vegas back in 2017 for about 3 years, and only recently came back to editing videos. I picked up Hitfilim since everyone was saying it was great and how similar it was to Pr which i always wanted to use just never did, It felt a little confusing at first but i loved it because you could edit inside of the frame which i loved and thought every editing program should have (still do). However all the almost necessary 'upgrades' for what to me felt like simple tools made no sense so about 2 weeks ago i switched to resolve and while its confusing AF and not really too intuitive (in my opinion) i can see how much better the free version is and how powerful it can be once i get used to it. Im kinda sad that i found hitfilm late because it has been my favourite software to use but here we are I guess. Loved the video, Has anyone else switched to resolve and found it confusing or is it just me?
As someone who’s been using hitfilm express for 6 years It’s kinda of hard for me to switch to other programs because of how used to hitfilm I am. I had a similar situation to yours where I can’t recommend hitfilm even if I use it. I have a separate channel for making videos and people always asked me what editor I use for my videos. I always tell them that I use hitfilm express, but suggest other programs since you’re better off learning something better like resolve considering the poor state of hitfilm right now.
I have had Hitfilm Express downloaded for years, used it a few times on some of my videos Never knew about any of this because (thankfully) I never updated it, so it still version 2021.1 Great video, good motivation to want to give making videos another shot!
Started with Vegas Pro, then moved to Premiere when I finally started getting serious in my editing during my college, then moved to Davinci Resolve. Fusion is the best compositing software I have the pleasure of learning.
I use hitfilm express, and still have it luckily never updated and have some of my bought effects. I also own davinci resolve sooo I like both! i want to make the switch but at least I can do it slowly on my own time.
First things first, the edit in this video is sick. Thumbs up to ya! Second, I personally left Hitfilm express back in late 2019 for similar issues to those you've mentioned, and I had no idea it would go through a drastic downfall 4 years later now. I'm ngl, though, if I say it was worth trying it out back in the days rather than struggling with more and more bugs nowadays. And three... why the fuck am I hit with an Artlist ad at the end of this video?
I used to use hitfilm. I actually used two different versions of it, "hitfilm 4 express" and the "hitfilm express" that you mentioned. I bought the perpetual license and some packs, that added some effects and other tools, for them on my old computer . The problem was when hitfilm decided to drop those versions entirely and those tools I bought werent transferred to the new subscription model. There is also a problem with the old versions that do not let me use the dlc that I purchased when I redownloaded them on my new pc. I tried reaching out to hitfilm and they didnt help, they basically told me "too bad". I actually liked using hitfilm but after them trying to force me into using their new subscription just to get access to things I have already bought, I will not be using them again.
I still have my Hitfilm Pro from 2021, and I'll keep using it. I used to champion the program everywhere I went and cry its name from the mountaintops. Oh how the mighty have fallen.
Been using Hitfilm Express for years now, literally editing a video with Hitfilm express when this was reccomended to me (Somehow avoided the updates, I'm on version 2021.1), I agree with all of this! I found out just a few days ago that you can't import gifs... I was so confused, it seems like such a basic feature! Definitely will switch editors after I finish this video.
i remeber back when i was 15 in 2017-2018, i was editing my videos on movie maker and i wanted to switch becuase i needed more features like overlaying pictures. i looked up some top 10 lists, and everyone said to use premier. but i had no money to spend, and i hated the creative cloud. so i went to the pirates bay, downloaded a cracked torrent with the highest seeds and installed it no problem. i used that illigal version of pirmier pro for 2 years to edit, and it worked perfectly. and seeing the shamless explotitive greed of adobe and fxhome, i see no problem with that option. but i think ppl should just use resolve. just dont pay a subscription to an editing software
I started editing in HitFilm express but now that Artlist bought FXHome (the company behind hitfilm) the new versions are a lot more restrictive on the free version. Before you had much better features in the express version. I hate to leave but I really need to.
HitFilm actually still has perpetual plans, but the button for it is very obscure (look at the very bottom at frame 4:51, "View Perpetual Plans"). I bought HitFilm Pro for the exact same reason - to escape Adobe. However, seeing them switch to a subscription model just made them out of my list. I use DaVinci Resolve (free version) now and it's even better. Supports sequence nesting, which is one of the most infuriating things about HitFilm as it didn't support it.
i use resolve but i gotta say that the premiere + after effects combined thing is sth i would like, in resolve it's pretty annoying to do some stuff, and the "fusion tab" workflow, idk i just don't like it, for things like green screening, and some other things, it's powerful in the sense that there are several ways to do things, but it has you switching tabs all the time, the node thing can be confusing, etc. ive been thinking of switching to Blender, because blender is confusing as well but at least it's open source so you have the guarantee that they're not gonna switch up on you
Such a great video, honestly always down to rag on Adobe because they’ve really amped up their scummy business practice to squeeze students and professionals alike for every penny they have, only to release some of the most mind-bogglingly ridiculous updates
When i had to reinstall every app i had. Ive noticed that hitfilm was different. I tried it out and the first thing that made me upset was the limited resolution it forces you. Its hard to get the old express version from the official website since its so buried
I had used hitfilm to make all of the videos on my channel and had to change. It got to the point where I couldn't export anything longer than 2 minutes without it crashing and I couldn't even download an older version. I had to export my video 2 minutes at a time and then stitch it together on a machine with an older version of hitfilm
Oh yeah I remember HitFilm, I used to use it's free version before VEGAS Pro 14. Good thing I bought it for 80€ when it was on sale like 5 years ago, it was normally 200€ back then. Seems like I dodged a bullet. :D Good video btw.
I used hitfilm express at one point, and it worked. But then, I tried to reinstall it more recently when I got a new PC. And it was a pain. So i just went for DaVinci resolve.
I found out about Hitfilm from a Mine Imator Channel of all things, and eventually got Pro back in 2018 or 19 as a part of a humble bundle after about a year of using VEGAS and loved it. I used it up until about 7ish months ago when it was too laggy for my PC, and I kid you not switched to Blender and FL Studio for video editing. I use FL for Music Vid type stuff(Visualizers, synced up animation, etc...) and Blender for everything else. I still have VEGAS installed on my PC(because I'm a software hoarder who never deletes anything) and I've thought of going back to it, and probably will when I make non music based content. I want to at least try resolve(if anything for their color grading tools) but my current setup is a bit underpowered. Also if anyone is looking for a free(albeit non-traditional) video editor that can basically run on a Potato, Blender is unironically a great option, if you can wrap your head around the learning curve. And since it was optimized for 3D animation, it renders video extremely fast, lightyears faster than every other NLE I've used.
I'm thinking now about how I used to use Hitfilm, frankly at the time I loved it (back when it was HitFilm express, I haven't touched it since about 2019), but my videos weren't super effect heavy. I now can't use Hitfilm due to it not being supported on my computer. I've recently switched to KdenLive and while it has a few issues I find it's workflow to be quite nice. It doesn't use composite shots or nested clips, but I've found this to be preferrable for larger projects, and your "composite shots" are more so just a section on a timeline that you specify in your effects. You can have composite effects which effect any clips in that timeline for any given duration, meaning no changing length of composite shots with arbitrary lengths. There's also my favorite feature which is prerendering, which is a MUST for effect heavy videos. It's not hardware accelerated on AMD on Windows, but if you use better operating systems (MacOS or Linux) hardware acceleration (during rendering only) works great. Hardware acceleration for timeline playback isn't supported fully yet, but prerendering makes this really IMO a non issue.
Actually i used hitfilm a few years ago, i also never updated it I found it to be really easy to get a grasp on and simple to use, it was pretty good and i made some fun shitposts Sad to see how it ended up, although i recently just "*legally obtained*" Premiere pro so ill give it a try
I don't know why but I haven't had any of these problems with hitfilm express, I still to this day use it for completely free and I haven't had any problems with watermarks, resolution restrictions, or render times.
i use hitfilm express, if you look your license in the page theres a link to download the last version of express and never update keeping your plugins.
I miss the days of Simon Jones and his excellent tuts. I stopped at hitfilm pro 4 as it suited my needs. Plus I have motion 5. Also I’m running this all on a mid 2011 Mac, so no point upgrading lol
lol I didn’t even realise hitfilm express was discontinued cos I never updated it. I still use it for editing stuff nowadays (although it’s never anything complicated cos idk how)
Haven't done serious video editing in a while but a few months back I picked up Clip Studio Pant PRO for $50 and decided to abandon the entire Adobe ecosystem all together. I picked up Davinci Resolve and while I haven't done anything on the level of what I used to do I find it to be usable enough. That plus the rapidly improving support for common video formats and better Linux compatibility I'll 100% be sticking with it once I make the switch from Windows on my next computer.
I have been using Hitfilm since about 8. And Mine is the express version. I have not upgraded since. Because I don't know how. Even if it explicitly says it as a hige banner.
Bro this is hurting me more than I already am the only software I can use rn is HitFilm and I already got two projects in there in the making, now I don't think it has a watermark unless you add one of the paid effects, so when I get those videos posted, I will switch to the other software you mentioned besides davinci cause as of now I can't run it and idk why
Nooo ;-; I had a problem with my computer and had to start from zero and lost my old account from Hitfilm. I really like the program, it was pretty intuitive and had everything I need for my projects. When I tried to download agan it started to crash my computer, and was sacre it was a maleware, so I cancel the setup. With what you said it sounds like it wasn't a maleware, but some kind of bug.
I've been using hitfilm express for on the side editing fun, and didn't really have any issues. Just checked, i'm on v2021.2, maybe that's why. Welp, guess I'm never updating then
I personally use kdenlive, i dont do much video editing, mostly trimming clips, but i very much dislike that davinci doesnt have gpu rendering in the free version, but kdenlive does, but blurring things is way better in davinci. Both have their pros and cons
I have been using HitFilm Pro for a long time, in fact, an extremely old version of HitFilm. Things were meh for a while and then the transition happened. I have created hundreds, several hundreds of video across UA-cam channels and other platforms. After waiting to buy HF for a while it finally just happened - I uninstalled HF and installed Davinci Resolve. I only knew HF, switching to Davinci was painful, I just want basic NLE - I'm not a 3d artist. That being said, getting used to DR, things are getting better and better every day for me editing wise in terms of ease of use, being less ocnfused, and enjoying the far superior performance. It's a shame to see what's happened to HF since it was a big part of me getting started.
I edit on a laptop and kdenlive is like a godsend; Davinci is way too much for my weak laptop but kden runs like butter, may be because i'm using linux but i'll do anything to get 4 more frames when playing video games
Hitfilm would have been one of the best video editing suites if the acquisition didn't happen, especially for the express version. Because the express version was getting to a point where before the acquisition, the last 'real' version was nearly perfect.
Well I use runwayml to edit all of my videos. Its more known for being able to generate ai videos but I use it to edit on my chromebook since all the other video editors on there are garbage!
i use capcut because the lack of complex editing tools means i have to use my creativity more and helps give my videos (in my opinion) a slightly different feel to premiere or davinci kinda like how a low budget movie can be more enjoyable than one with a really high budget(also my ape brain likes the simple layout)
Idk, it's true that render processing is SUPER LONG, and it's very PC demanding, but I use it everyday (I'm editing a whole anime), and it's pretty good (I'm using the free version).
What is the whole anime you're editing? That souinds really cool! I use HitFilm cuz it was the first free thing I used. I'm not good with it, but it's nice to have something premier-esque without Adobe's clutches.
Interesting, I got Hitfilm in a Humble Bundle which came with a year of updates, but I didn't renew my license after that so I'm able to use that version forever. That means I'm stuck on version 16, which I've never had an issue with! Albeit, I don't really make videos and I'm not an editor so maybe there are issues here and there but for what I need it for, v16 is excellent! It sucks that the new versions have been ruined so badly
I just watched your most recent video about Ludwig’s experiment and when I saw a fire effect you used, I immediately thought about “Fire [Layer Only]” LMFAO SO I knew you were a fellow Hitfilm connoisseur (?) And I mainly can 100% relate to your stockholm syndrome feelings lmfao I’ve been on Hitfilm since like 2015 when it was on “version 13” and it suffered from certain blunders, like there was a time when they updated express and old plugins did not move from the old version, which got the devs a lot of flak. But the artlist takeover is the most unintelligible decision ever, they betrayed every single promise they made (Like keeping their community focused approach) and it’s all so frustrating because the program isn’t bad in itself, but it’s severely lagging behind everyone else when it wasn’t always like that. Idk, I’ll keep using the software because I’m a sadistic person and honestly I have developed a comfortable workflow around it, but the little quirks you mention in this video make it a hard choice sometimes, they’re slowly bleeding the brand and the community which is long gone, unfortunately.
well that sucks although i neve go on line with my editing pc much anyway so it hasnt been up dated for years so its still got hitfilm express the origanal on it, only found this as i was serching for tutorials as havent used it in ages and wanted to get going with it again might just get another editer and learn how to use that insted now.

After going through the trouble of learning how to use it on UA-cam, I'm going to ride this software till the wheels fall off.
same here, hb is goated
I don't know anything about film editing and have never used Hit Film, but this was a really interesting video and as someone currently in the cult of Adobe I can empathize :,)
Thanks to you, I now know what editing software to use!
Davinci!
(Only used Clipchamp & Filmora X before)
It really sucks to know that HitFilm Express got butchered like this. When I found out about HitFilm Express like 2 years ago, it's one of the best free video editor that I've seen
I am so happy I wasn't "updating" back then (always waited a few months before a new updates because they needed quite some time for bugfixing)
Still have Express where it worked really well with all the addons I bought and it runs with no restrictions.
I love it and will keep using it.
I have had Hitfilm Express downloaded for years, used it a few times on some of my videos
Never knew about any of this because (thankfully) I never updated it, so it still version 2021.1
Great video, good motivation to want to give making videos another shot!
I hate to leave but I really need to.
that transition at the end is sooo CLEAN
I used to use hitfilm express and it was something i loved so much. and.... when i tried to get back into it, it seemed *different* to say the least.
Thanks for the overview
I still have express and I am just learning about this
Oh yeah I remember HitFilm, I used to use it's free version before VEGAS Pro 14. Good thing I bought it for 80€ when it was on sale like 5 years ago, it was normally 200€ back then. Seems like I dodged a bullet. :D
Good video btw.
I used to use Hitfilm Express. Really loved it. I was always wondering where the fuck it went when I needed to redownload it! Good video! :)
I used hitfilm express at one point, and it worked. But then, I tried to reinstall it more recently when I got a new PC.
And it was a pain.
So i just went for DaVinci resolve.
It's good for a start. But if you want to go higher resolution or do something more it's crazy expensive.
3:26 very good blur, ends a little bit before it switching so it doesnt even do its job
Actually i used hitfilm a few years ago, i also never updated it
I found it to be really easy to get a grasp on and simple to use, it was pretty good and i made some fun shitposts
Sad to see how it ended up, although i recently just "*legally obtained*" Premiere pro so ill give it a try
jokes on artlist, i still have the old hitfilm express version 😹😹 im using pr/ae now though
I don't know why but I haven't had any of these problems with hitfilm express, I still to this day use it for completely free and I haven't had any problems with watermarks, resolution restrictions, or render times.
I had hitfilm for a while and honestly it was harder for me to learn than Davinci resolve which is why I deleted it
Started using hitfilm about a year or two ago, used it once, haven't used it since. Have 3 upgrades to make, that I don't intend to make.
i use hitfilm express, if you look your license in the page theres a link to download the last version of express and never update keeping your plugins.
That plus the rapidly improving support for common video formats and better Linux compatibility I'll 100% be sticking with it once I make the switch from Windows on my next computer.
glad to say I still have express 13 and can use it without any of the stupid new restrictions
I have been using Hitfilm since about 8. And Mine is the express version. I have not upgraded since. Because I don't know how. Even if it explicitly says it as a hige banner.
Bro this is hurting me more than I already am the only software I can use rn is HitFilm and I already got two projects in there in the making, now I don't think it has a watermark unless you add one of the paid effects, so when I get those videos posted, I will switch to the other software you mentioned besides davinci cause as of now I can't run it and idk why
me who didnt upgrade from hitfilm express... 👁👄👁
Exactly. It still works so why not continue using it.
Initially I was skeptical, as I use hitfilm a lot, but just 1 minute and 30 seconds in, he's made a ton of good points.
I can still download the version i got with my order, and since that is literally all i use the website for i hadnt even noticed
Is there any way to copy and paste a package of keyframes?
I've been using hitfilm express for on the side editing fun, and didn't really have any issues. Just checked, i'm on v2021.2, maybe that's why. Welp, guess I'm never updating then
I personally use kdenlive, i dont do much video editing, mostly trimming clips, but i very much dislike that davinci doesnt have gpu rendering in the free version, but kdenlive does, but blurring things is way better in davinci. Both have their pros and cons
still use hitfilm express bc i'm too lazy to update stuff but now i'm glad i didn't update
I used hitfilm for years but when I finally got a new better computer, it refuses to work for me anymore and just can't render anything
I’ve used hitfilm for about 4 yrs now. And it’s definitely gone downhill since I first started using it. Can wait to transition to a new editor!!
Can anyone tell me what is jhxc's editing style called, so I can look it up and learn more
I use to use davinci resolve, i use premiere now but since i dont know how to edit its pretty easy and basic but yeah
Lol i never upgraded and am still happily using express, didn't realize this was even occurring!
This is why I actually still have hitfilm 2021.3. I switched to the newer version and said "aw hell no" and went back because of the issues.
I edit on a laptop and kdenlive is like a godsend; Davinci is way too much for my weak laptop but kden runs like butter, may be because i'm using linux but i'll do anything to get 4 more frames when playing video games
Great video :)
What is the best Verion of hitflim ?
Hitfilm would have been one of the best video editing suites if the acquisition didn't happen, especially for the express version. Because the express version was getting to a point where before the acquisition, the last 'real' version was nearly perfect.
Well I use runwayml to edit all of my videos. Its more known for being able to generate ai videos but I use it to edit on my chromebook since all the other video editors on there are garbage!
Used hitfilm express for years until 2021 cause they wanted me to use premiere at work. Didn't know what they did to my boy, it's so sad
Dang, I used to use Hitfilm Express. Sad to see they switched to a subscription model.
this morning, i use this and then, after I unplugged the PC for cleaning it's now saying that Invalid OpenGL context
i use capcut because the lack of complex editing tools means i have to use my creativity more and helps give my videos (in my opinion) a slightly different feel to premiere or davinci kinda like how a low budget movie can be more enjoyable than one with a really high budget(also my ape brain likes the simple layout)
and its free😎😎
saved me some time, thank you
I like your outro music
Idk, it's true that render processing is SUPER LONG, and it's very PC demanding, but I use it everyday (I'm editing a whole anime), and it's pretty good (I'm using the free version).
What is the whole anime you're editing? That souinds really cool! I use HitFilm cuz it was the first free thing I used. I'm not good with it, but it's nice to have something premier-esque without Adobe's clutches.
@@Luke-we9gj I'm editing Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin)! I'm doing the original 1996 anime to be more manga friendly
It sucks that the new versions have been ruined so badly
ey, thanks for the info my man.
I agree with that now i hate it i was a fan of hitfilms but i disappointed they already removed the perpetual license..
I just watched your most recent video about Ludwig’s experiment and when I saw a fire effect you used, I immediately thought about “Fire [Layer Only]” LMFAO SO I knew you were a fellow Hitfilm connoisseur (?)
And I mainly can 100% relate to your stockholm syndrome feelings lmfao I’ve been on Hitfilm since like 2015 when it was on “version 13” and it suffered from certain blunders, like there was a time when they updated express and old plugins did not move from the old version, which got the devs a lot of flak.
Also my bad, it wasn’t 13, it was like Hitfilm 4 express or smth when I started (?)
well that sucks although i neve go on line with my editing pc much anyway so it hasnt been up dated for years so its still got hitfilm express the origanal on it, only found this as i was serching for tutorials as havent used it in ages and wanted to get going with it again might just get another editer and learn how to use that insted now.
I used Hitfilm for years now and never upgraded to the new version. I'm glad i didn't. Makes me sad because I loved having one tool for everything. Seriously have to think about getting Industry Standard now. Eergh...
something ive found is that if you find something and get used top it, stick with it. the software isn't really that important, its the user.
I’ve used hitfilm for like 6 years and don’t wanna switch
Fortunately i didn't hit the "Install update" button in 2022, so i still use the Express version. :)
