Can't believe I missed this one. These guys really lifted me up out of the doldrums with this song, love the mix up of different genres, fusion was a big thing at the time.
Some music-loving friends from IoZ Went to Canada about 20 years back (he had a job with their government). After about a year I sent them a CD where I burned the best Aussie music of the time - inc Cat Empire. Apparently they took my CD to a party and the crowd went off.
Nah. We let musicians do what they want, as long as the music they produce is fun. I may be a bit biased, but I honestly think that Australian music is the best, even if my favourite band is Japanese
It's a shame that most of the band left last year, they have some tracks that are just great fun and they're an iconic part of the Australian Indie scene of the 00's and 10's. This track actually came out in 2003 and was the song that let them break out on the mainstream radio stations.
No idea why these guys didn't take over the world, unless they were just about having a blast playing live and aren't as aggressive about self promotion or something. I've known lots of groups who wrote great stuff and played like demons but didn't choose to engage with the record selling business and just played music on their own terms but these guys put out new albums regularly and if there was any indication that that was a difficult process for them I'm not aware of it. The fun mixture of elements and styles and their playful way with lyrics often puts people off, and that makes me sad but it seems to be a symptom of the times we're living in. 95% of the people I try to turn them onto immediately start dancing in place like you guys did but then they decide that they're 'just silly' and blow them off, especially some of their gypsy circus-like tunes. I'm not sure when 'silly' became something we shouldn't embrace and support but I'm not gonna play along with that shit, so there. You might want to check out some of the songs Harry sings - his vocals are completely different from Felix's who you heard on here. Felix is usually (but not always) presenting himself as the smooth, sexy, fuckable rocker kind of dude like in this but Harry sometimes gets into all kinds of wild stylistic stuff that takes everything up a few notches.
The trumpet player also sings and his voice is wild! Til the Ocean Takes us All is one of my favs of theirs.
