My first press was similar, I have since moved on to bigger and better presses, but I remember that little press doing every thing I needed it to do at the time.
While many people go for the cheaper bottle jack press like this one I prefer to have the hydraulic cylinder type mounted at the top with the pump at the side as it's more compact......I just bought a 10 ton one on line.
This unit is much like the press I bought from Northern Tool , about 8/10 years ago , except mine has a top bar being tubular (reinforced) and having heavier working plates ... The first thing I did was to place pieces of a paper towel inside the springs , as the springs were oiled and seeped oil .. I also wired both ends of the springs to the eyes , in case of spring failure I didn't want pieces flying .... Next I cut the front edge of the legs to a 1.5 inch radius to prevent kneeling on the sharp corners ... The press at height of 49 inches was not at a good working position , so I built a 18 or 19 inch (high) box to place under it , where all the tooling for the press goes .. (anchored press to the box ) The jack has a valve with 2 flat spots , so I "crushed" a 1/2 nut to fit over the valve and tapped it for a set screw , then welded a 3/4" X 3" flat piece to it ... Now can be opened /closed with finger tip ... The work table is uneven , but straightens under load ... The piece supporting the jack moves about a bit , but once against the load , this too is not a concern ... The jack sets loose in the press , but this is sometimes useful to get the handle out of your face .. (turned 45 degrees right) The jack does not move under load ... The 18 inch opening , (horiz) through narrow , has never been a problem ... I decided on this 12 ton because ; price $79 (sale at the time ) , space , the machine shop where I went for years did everything with a 15 ton press , I had access to a 30 ton press ... I have found nothing (so far) I can't do with the 12 ton ...! Accessories are a "must" to get full use from any press , either purchased or "home-brew" .... I also tied the top of the press to the wall , with a short cord , to prevent tipping while pulling down on the handle ... Of interest ; the ram travel is, 1/20 inch per full stroke of the handle , so 20 strokes per inch ... One soon learns NOT a let the jack to return closed white working on things , but rather to just loosen the arbor ... I have gotten a lot of use from this press , seems to be used more for bending and straightening than pressing stuff... Also found that the press makes , one hell of a vise for holding things ...
This is almost exactly like my first press I built in my shop about 15 years ago. That 12 ton jack will get 90 percent of your small job done with ease. It's nice to see a simple and straight forward tool like this made for the home shop.

Thanks for documenting your insightful experience
Reminds me I should use my everlast welder and make a hydraulic press for the shop. That unit you have there looks pretty sturdy.

when do we understand that the load reaches 12 ton? or the load is constantly 12 ton during loading?
😀😀😀😀😀
I've almost got all of the pieces for my press. Just need to get the remaining pieces, cut to size and weld up with my powerarc welder.
