  • I tested out two tenor saxophone mouthpieces to see which one would be a better fit for me.

The Otto Link has a much nicer sound! I've used links for years. They are more in line with what Adolphe Sax designed when he created the mouthpiece. I put a wedge in mine to give it a little more cut or "edge" in the sound, but it is nice either way. I'd go with the link. The Dukoff has some intonation problems and a sound my ear does not like. Just a thought.

I play dukoff on both my saxes.
I'd recommend shaping the Reed to the sound you want. If it's bright use a softer Reed or shave your Reed down to get that tone.
Once you have it right those dukoff
    Pieces sound amazing

Someone may have addressed this, but the B5 mouthpiece is actually a Rico Royal Graftonite

Man, what a great demonstration! Playing Over the Rainbow back to back, I could really hear the difference. What I heard was a sound that had a little more edge to the sound when played on the Dukoff vs the Link. The Link did not have some of the same partials as the Dukoff however I think both pieces are great. It becomes more of a personal choice in what sound you want to try and get. As far as ease of playing, I can only say this and this is my opinion, not all reeds work the same on every mouthpiece, so in that sense one has to adapt to the piece you are playing on and tweak your reeds accordingly. Take a couple of laps around the track to get the feel of these race cars, then open em up and let er' rip when the time is right.

completely in agreement! A fantastic review. Personally, I think he nailed it on that the dukoff wasn't quite balanced throughout the tones of the horn. Though I've always been a otto link fan myself, I've been looking around to find other sounds from different mouthpieces not because I don't like the link but because I'm looking for more variety in tone and sound, this is why I think one should have more than one mouthpiece. So I'd say find the mouthpiece that you prefer the most but never settle. If you can find another sound that you enjoy from another piece remember it doesn't hurt to have more than one!!

Usually it's you that has to adapt to the mouthpiece. It takes a couple days to a week to adjust (depending who you are).

you should try the dukoff M chamber less of a baffle. Dukoffs rock, there is a perception that they are too bright but you can get a warm link sound with practice,

Great video from beginning to end. I thought you put it together really well.
I also play a tenor...Selmar SA80. I've been considering changing my mouthpiece. For the last 10 years, I've been playing a rubber Ottolink 5*. I like it. I am considering the Ottolink 7*, but I'm not sure yet.
    Your video is very helpful.

Sometimes it takes time to find the right mouthpiece. I kind of want a jazz mouthpiece, but they are really expensive. But I'm guessing they last a good long while. Depends on how much you use it I guess. But from listening to this, I honestly love the sound of Otto Link 7.

Thanks! Sounds nice. Have you ever tried an STM 8? Just curious. I'm looking in to finding/getting a Vintage STM Florida 8, or contemporary STM 8.

Dont forget to be realistic - you'll have to do some work whichever method you use for learning sax I've been researching into teaching yourself sax and discovered a fantastic website at Takiras Music Method (google it if you are interested)

Buying dukoff is kind of a lucky draw, even if you buy the same model, some of them are made bad and some of them are made in the best quality
