    In this video we show you how to properly adjust both the idle screw and the cold start screw on late model EFI KTM dirt bikes.
    Just want the dets? Turn the red screw to adjust idle. Turn the yellow screw to set the cold start.
    Having your bike setup properly, particularly the idle setting, has a big impact on how easy the bike starts, how it runs when you're at low engine RPMs, and how easy it is to flame out or stall the bike.

    On a warmed up bike, adjust the idle (red) to spec, turn off bike, then back off on the choke screw all the way(yellow) push in choke screw (yellow) now start bike, no increase in idle yet due to choke screw (yellow) all the way out. Start turning in choke screw(yellow) in (one click at a time) until the idle goes up, then add three more clicks. choke is now set close to factory. adjust to taste. Then recheck on a cold bike!! This is how i did it after adding a Vortex ECU 👍👍👍👍 My Bike late model KTM 500EXC-F

    This is EXACTLY the same issues I was having after checking everything twice, adjusting the TPS richer, completely rebuilding the engine as I thought it was maybe a low compression issue, valves readjusted, in tank and in line fuel filters changed, coil tested, new plug, etc. It was due to the stupid cold start screw being adjusted way outta whack because at one point I adjusted it for idle instead of the red screw! The manual doesn’t even talk about the cold start being adjustable even. I just discovered the issue last night, and today found your video. Too funny. Cheers!

    Setting idle to spec actually solves near-all flameout and stalling issues; power is smoother at low settings too.
    Makes a lot of noise when it feels like it should be quieter (at idle) but these bikes are all about riding, not idling.

    Thanks for the video. I found the 24 300xcw manual is wrong regarding the cold start and idle. They copied the 23 300xcw, which is TPI, over to the 24 300xcw manual. My cold start was so backed out, counterclockwise, that when pushed in, it would not release when rolling the throttle forward. The manual also has the idle description backward. Turn the idle screw clockwise or in increases the idle.

    I just figured out how the yellow button is supposed to work. Mine was backed all the way out. I was confused, because if I pushed it in it wouldn’t stay, and I could also pull it out until it clicked. So confusing. Anyway, start winding the yellow in and then push it up to see if it clicks into place instead of doing nothing. When it clicks and stays in the ‘up’ position, operate the throttle (bike not running) and the button will pop down and lock into the downward position. I’m other words, if the yellow adjuster is backed all the way out, it won’t do this. Cheers!

      Good setup! I have not noticed any smoke at all. Sounds like it could potentially be water or oil (which may be a seal or even a head gasket) but I'd have to see it to guess further. Might just be unburnt fuel (the GET supplies a lot more fuel than stock).

    How do you adjust the throttle to pop it back out ? There’s no videos on that that’s what I need trying to figure out how to get my start knob to pop back out by twisting the throttle the opposite direction on my 2017 yz450f please make a video on that !

    • @ExtremeSportsWannaBes
      @ExtremeSportsWannaBes  2 роки тому

      On the KTM, with the cold start knob is engaged (pushed in) it'll idle high. To stop the high idle, twist the throttle backwards (off) a bit and it should release. If it doesn't, it may not be adjusted quite right. You can also pull down on the yellow adjuster to release high idle.

    The yellow knob will turn when not pushed in but does it still change adjustment or must it be pushed in to achieve cold idle adjustment?

    • @ExtremeSportsWannaBes
      @ExtremeSportsWannaBes  2 роки тому +1

      So both actually. When you push it in, you're propping open the butterfly. How much open depends on how you adjust the screw. But, if you turn the screw in too far, it'll actually start to open the butterfly even when it's not "engaged". I've talked to a lot of people (myself included at first) who mistakenly adjust their idle using the yellow screw. This is incorrect, and will cause issues starting when the bike is warm.

    • @coarsegoldkid
      @coarsegoldkid 2 роки тому +2

      @@ExtremeSportsWannaBes So whether or not the yellow knob is out and turned or pushed in and turned, the same effect happens, turning opens the butterfly. I was under the impression that one would have to push in the yellow knob and turn it. I have one that when pushed in for fast idle it works as it should. Revs are higher. Turn the throttle grip forward in a minute and it disengages. All good. Revs drop but as it warms up the normal idle never gets to spec. I've turned the red knob in as far as it will go to no avail. I might have another issue to sort out. Thanks for your response.

    • @ExtremeSportsWannaBes
      @ExtremeSportsWannaBes  2 роки тому +4

      The yellow screw is likely your issue. It's supposed to only "engage" when you press it up for cold start (like chokes on carb bikes). When you press it up for a cold start, you can also screw it in or out to adjust how much effect it has on cold start.
      However, if you disengage it (pull it down) you can still turn it very far in and have it start to open the butterfly even though it's not actually "engaged". In this case, you'll never get your idle set quite right (though it can at first seem like you are actually adjusting basic idle as it has a similar effect). You will have cold start, and some warm idle, but once fully warm, you'll have hard starting and erratic or inconsistent idle speeds.
      The thing to do is back the yellow screw out most of the way (so no chance it can engage). It won't work for cold start, even if you push it up, but that's just step one.
      Then, warm the bike up fully (first fan start, or 180 degrees ish). Now, let idle and adjust the red screw until the bike runs around 1800 RPM (the suggested idle speed). On mine, this requires turning the red screw very far down (I actually thought I'd hit the stop by compressing the spring fully, but when I tried harder, I was able to adjust a bit further). With idle set like this, you should be running fine. Next time you cold start the bike, engage the yellow screw and adjust inward until you get an appropriate amount of cold "high" idle. Disengage and ride.
      Following this, you should be able to get idle set right. If this does not work, might look at other causes (such as if you use an aftermarket ECU, check throttle position setting, etc).

    • @ExtremeSportsWannaBes

      I believe the FC250 is set up the same as my 500. If so, there are yellow and red adjustment screws. Red controls the idle when warm. Yellow controls the cold idle if engaged. To decrease the cold idle speed back the yellow screw out/down until it runs where you like it.

    • @ExtremeSportsWannaBes
      @ExtremeSportsWannaBes  2 роки тому +1

      If it's just a problem with the idle being far out of adjustment, then you should be able to start it and hold the throttle a little open to keep it running while you adjust the screw. If the throttle won't keep it alive, it's probably not the idle but something else wrong.

    • @ExtremeSportsWannaBes

      Engines are pretty simple. They need air, fuel, and a spark. Check all three and see what's missing. We know a guy who left a plastic glove in the air box, and we've sometimes forgotten to turn our fuel on. If it's nothing that simple, check that fuel is flowing from the tank. If the bike is carbureted, remove and completely clean the carb, if it's fuel injected, you may need to check the fuel pump and injectors. Could also be an issue with the ECU.
