A perfect example of understated acting. The characters appear drunk (slight staggers, and facial expressions) but not going over the top - not falling all over the place for example. Brilliant acting even when "just" singing the song,
Madame in particular is the perfect example - the same actress is used for the 25th anniversary, but she’s much more sober there, and even seems to be pretending to like Thenardier to his face more than being disgusted here.
I watched several performances of this show over the past few days, and have to say that these two are by far the best Madam and Monsieur Thénardier. They just capture the characters so perfectly, a complete sleeze and a drunken wench that love to hate and hate to love each other to the fullest. You can just tell that they love these roles and put their all into it, with little bits like the look Monsieur gives when he says 'lighten your purse' and how giddy he acts when going over how he charges extra for the mirror.
Absolutely NO ONE does this better than Alun. Makes all the other performances of this null and void. 10th Anniversary production hands down the VERY BEST ever!
