This is the only garden show I watch on normal playback speed and often rewatch. The others get listened to on fast forward. That's because this is so chock full of practical information. Thanks for another high value video.
@@walnutchasegardenandhome9944 Yes, his knowledge and demeanor. I have a low threshold for those hyper-perfectionist gardners, who probably scare more people away from gardening than anything else. This guy has such a good attitude. "Don't over-worry." "Have a few back up plants in case the frost gets the ones planted outside." "Put a couple seeds in each cell, germination rates aren't 100% and you don't want to wait around for one seed to germinate. " I'm sure you heard those too. Cheers. 🥂

Hello everybody!!! My butternut squash, cucumber, yellow Straightneck squash, dark green, and golden zucchini are all doing beautifully. I have been permitted to pickup the used coffee grounds from a local Starbucks coffee shop every Friday!!! I will add them to my compost bin. My neighbor allows me to collect the bags of leaves each fall after the landscaper had gathered them and bagged them up. It’s so nice to have establishments that are happy to see someone growing food in their backyard garden. I’m so grateful! Have you beautiful gardening journey!

I just set up my cattle panel and plan on doing the same thing but keep stalling because I'm not completely confident how far apart to space them. I have the end thats 50" to work with and was wondering if I should try to squeeze 4 plants along it to climb up over the trellis or play it safe and only do 3...its pretty rainy in the pnw and I dont want to create the perfect environment for mildew and disease but also want to maximize my space.( as you can see i overthink everything 🤣) Not sure if it makes a difference but I was planning on planting more vining crops on the other side too so they can come up and meet.
Very helpful for this very new beginner! I tried gardening last year knowing nothing (putting some plants in my backyard dirt. I purchased from a roadside stand) and got some fruits but learned alot more watching your channel and others throughout the season, learning what I did wrong. (which was everything!) So this year I bought your homestead gardening book and got it yesterday! We are two people in a small yard with digging dogs (ugh putting up a fenced in area now). Im having a hard time trying to figure out how to grow a tiny garden. Can I grow just two cucumber plants, one squash, tomato, etc and one of just about everything we would eat so to speak in a 25 x 8 area, so we're not overwhelmed with fruits and garden upkeep? Im in zone 6a. I did buy a canner and jars too but thats all new to me too. Ugh so overwhelming! But love your channel!
Congrats on getting started. Lol I'm sure youre not doing everything wrong and that is how you learn. Yes on the number of plants. You have to imagine them large. Some you will replace mid summer but start with what you like. You can always add more. If melons get heavy on the trellis, I make a little hammock for them to "rest" in. I use pantyhose, cheesecloth and the net bags you get with avocado you buy at the store.
Thanks for this!!!. I am super new at this. I indoor started cabbages, broccoli, chard, Brussels, watermelon, tomatoes and peppers. I definitely have to transplant the melon since I now see the tray I used will be too small soon. I’m in zone 7 south Jersey. We have some chilly temps coming up again. Everything i started was on 3/5 and they are all growing leaves . I was hoping to move my brassicas outdoors but might place them on my makeshift green house (screened in porch with western exposure and plastic on the screens to keep pollen out for now. I have a lot to do and it’s challenging with 4 very curious and “helpful” pups.

I got my first tomato sprouts today, Beef Steak, and a few Leysa and lipstick pepper sprouts are breaking the ground. I am still waiting on Bonnie's Best other peppers and lavender to sprout. I don't start cucumbers and squash in my area until March 25th. My last average frost date is April 10th, but I've seen snow on mother's day, so you never know when nature is going to throw a curve ball. Eggplant, Nasturtium, Stevia, and chitting the next batch of potatoes is next on my list, Friday or Saturday. Gary, I planted my squash seeds indoors too early, as I'm now discovering from your incredible videos. So informative. I'm in Alliston, Ontario, which is zone 5b. We usually can hope for no frost after the May 24th weekend. My seedlings are now separated in to 3" pots but they have multiple buds and one has tendrils already. They're 8 - 10 inches. Are they no good now? Do I have to start over? I have them under a grow light with other veggies; tomatoes, peppers, dill, basil, etc. I still have at least 3 weeks to go before I can safely transplant with no fear of frost. I do have many fabric pots filled and ready to go if you think I should plant them and bring them in when it's too cold. These were intended for my peppers. The squash were to go in the ground. Not sure what to do now! I'm learning all the time. And sometimes by error. Thank you. Kelly
They arent bad, I just found they stay smaller and arent as vigorous as a small plant put outside. I would keeps some as an experiment. But start some new seed. Yeah 3 more week is a long time. They mature from germination outdoors to producing in as little as 45 days. They indoor wants will try to produce. I enjoyed this video cucumbers and squash and zucchini seed planting and just starts and how to plant them in the garden my question is can you grow cucumbers in a hanging basket it seems like I saw someone on UA-cam with the hanging baskets I just wonder how do you feel about that
Probably not less it was a really dwarf variety. The crop weight would wreck the vines and you need a lot of soil. That be one heavy hanging basket. In fact, I have never seen that. Thank you for all the valuable info. You inspired me to and guidance for starting quality seedling. I have question, I kind of carried away and have more than 100 variety of seeds food and flowers both. Now strategically what’s profitable ? Is it having more quantity of few variety of plants or having small quantity but more variety of baby plants to sell ? I’m already running out of space LOL and kind of nervous and excited. May be I have to go ahead with the process of selling in my urban neighborhood and get feel of what sells right ? Would love to hear what would be your strategy?

I just planted cucumbers in seed trays today, but I see they are too small. I am going to pluck them up and plant in cups. Do I need to cover them with a clear cover?

Thank you for the information. This is my first year trying to grow these from seed. Can you clarify this for me? So, cucumbers and squash should only be in their starter pots for 4 weeks. How does this compare to tomatoes and peppers? I think in a previous video you said to start peppers before tomatoes since peppers take longer to germinate. In general, how many weeks does it take peppers and tomatoes to get ready to transplant? Is 4 weeks enough for those as well?
Yeah they grow fast and get big. Tomatoes and peppers are slower and can be indoors 6-12 weeks. Peppers are the higher end. Hi, friend. I am from Baltimore County. Can I start to plant tomato, cucumber and basil seeds in the pots now and leave the pots outside? Next wee it will be old again. I will bring them back when it is under 32 degree. I would like some of your advice, thank you.
You can move them in and out but, yes, bring them in on freezing days. If you put them out during the day and bring them in at night regularly. they will germinate faster. The soil stays warmer. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN couple of years ago I tried some herb and veggie seeds. I kept them on my back porch on the edge under the eaves. Still very close to the bright full sunlight. The ones that came up stayed leggy and never developed. They never became strong enough to transplant. Any ideas as to why?
Gary quick question for you. Do you use heat pads to keep your soil temperature up for germination. I’m going on to weeks with new pepper seeds and only a few have germinated. Love your videos thanks for your help Rudy
Peppers are a pain. Oddly, I find that the smaller the pepper, the longer the germination. My bells germinated in about 10 days, and my habanada took 21, both with a heat mat.

Hi Gary, would you still recommend setting your new starts out during the day if it’s overcast, if the temp is still appropriate? And if it’s not can you then supplement the grow light for those gray days. I have new tomato starts that are just breaking the surface and no sun outside? So they’re under the lights. But I need that real estate under the lights for other starts.
You can do what you are doing. They dont have to go back under the lights. Remember tomatoes can germinate in Nature and maybe the get a week of overcast and do okay. I don’t bake my potting soil - I just bottom water and use fans to dry out the top layer. If there’s no moisture on the top, there’s nothing for the gnats to eat and they either die or found their way out of doors.
He briefly describes his sterilization method at 1:50 in the video, the boiling water method. He has made several videos on making a seed starting mix and others demonstrating how he sterilizes the mix. He put a link in the description for a playlist which would cover your questions. You could also use the search tool on UA-cam (the magnifying glass at the top of the page) and type in "Gary Pilarchik seed starting mix" and you will get several results because he has covered this so many times. I really suggest the chemical types for indoors at reduced strength for emergencies. No smell and effective. Any of them. Fish emulsion is great but it really smells. Indoors is a different beast.

Agree 100%. Gary is very knowledgeable

But lol I could be wrong.

You can move them in and out but, yes, bring them in on freezing days. If you put them out during the day and bring them in at night regularly. they will germinate faster. The soil stays warmer. Please subscribe. Thanks.

Do people that start seeds inside their house usually take seed pots when they have several flats inside and outside daily?
No but it is an option to do to harden them off early or to grow indoors without a set of grow lights. Most commonly grow lights are used.

As long as the temps are good, outside helps in my opinion

Ok that makes sense. Now I’m wondering since they germinated inside, and are about a week old if it’s to late to start this in and out process?
Gary have you tried growing zucchini and yellow squash vertically? I did this last year but was not very productive. The plants did not seem very happy
I have grown them up and down a small trellis but not straight up. They did okay.

The amazon link to your storefront doesn't seem to work for me. I have tried on several of the videos to click the link.
I just checked it. Seems to be working now. Thanks for trying

If potting soil isn’t available to start seeds…how d we make our own? Bake soil in the oven to kill fungus?
Cheers!🥂
@@blurrylights6344 Thank you! Yes! I felt bad after I sent that message as I continued watching his video- he actually mentioned it!! He’s so thorough! Thank you for your help as well:):):)
Check out my seed starting series for 2022. Seed Starting 101. I show you how to make it. You dont need microbes for seed starting. They get plenty once planted.

Hey! Do you still have an affiliate coupon code for vermistera? I tried to add the one from your website to buy some castings and worm tea and it said coupon not valid.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Yup, I copied and pasted it from your site. Their site says the coupon isn’t valid. Not a huge deal of course but I want you to get credit!
What fertilizer did you use?
I really buy any organic granular on sale. I mix them on buckets.

I have in the past. Now I mix up different buckets full of stuff as that is easy to move around.

Help! I sent you and email with pics of my seedlings. Trying to order from your links for a good fertilizer for my seedlings....they are small and slightly yellowed. Which fertilizer on your Amazon account do you suggest? Thank you in advance!
I really suggest the chemical types for indoors at reduced strength for emergencies. No smell and effective. Any of them. Fish emulsion is great but it really smells. Indoors is a different beast.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Would you suggest this one on your amazon for indoor use? "VermisTerra Earthworm Tea (Quart) - Organic Casting Tea" Thank you!
Yeah I use that too. It is more pricey but it works for me. Use my code THERUSTEDGARDEN
