Recorded from an original 78 shellac, played on a 1918 Victrola.
Kindly provided by Donald "Skip" Lockhart of Needham, Ma, USA.
Complete with needle noise. No attempts to "improve" the sound.
Caruso recorded it on 17. March 1907. He had made two recordings of the aria previously - in 1902 and 1904.

Absolutely superb. The greatest ever recording of this aria. People talk about the Caruso sob and his histrionics, but they never mention the beauty of the line, the incredible breath control, and the wonderful final diminuendo which hardly any other tenor attempts. All this requires phenomenal vocal stamina, and the way other tenors attempt to reproduce the emotion is in most cases simply laughable.
Absolutely astonishing range, timbre, control, and fluidity/flexibility.
Truly, Caruso had it all, vocally - and lived up to his first name "Enrico", for his voice enriched the world!

Yes, it certainly has been a while... I was fortunate enough to be contacted by Donald "Skip" Lockhart who has several old 78s as well as the Victrola to go with it. Amazing merger of 1918 high tech and modern technology· He recorded it with his iPhone!
