- In 2020, several leading airlines retired their Boeing 747 fleet, but why? What is pushing airlines to say goodbye to the queen of the skies? Is the continued emergence of aircraft such as the 787? Is it because the type isn't getting any younger, or are there other reasons?

The 747 will always be a legendary aircraft, and one of the most recognizable.
Together with Cocorde, the 747 is the most recognisable plane in the sky, in my humble opinion. I am hoping Lufthansa are still flying theirs in June 2025 when I will be flying in one to Melbourne via Singapore. Thank you😊❤
Forgot the a380 (and at a different level, the Boeing & Airbus special cargo planes)...
Given Lufthansa is still flying the 747 due to the 777x certification delays...just need to hope they dont reschedulle it for another route...
You forgot the De Havilland Comet
For some cargo routes, some of the cargo would be better served on the Boeing 747 because if the cargo is large, the Boeing 747 might be able to handle the size better that other planes. It depends on the circumstances.
ETOPS change the industry
Fuel consumption for an old aeroplane with the latest engines still having a 40% bigger CO2 footprint than any other plane. Including the A380.
The 747 maybe the Queen of the Skies, but the 380 is by far and away the King of the Skies.
Yes but the so called king is in no way as versatile as the Queen. She can do passengers and is unbeatable for large freight.

Some of the747s were certainly showing their age, 5 years ago I flew BA on a 22 year old refurbished 747 from LHR to DC it felt like a modern aircraft and was a great experience however on the return flight a non refurbished 23 year old BA 747 it was an absolute disgrace that BA were still operating it.
I do like the 747 but for looks the A340-600 wins hands down in my opinion.
But it is said that both types are not seen at LHR anymore .

Between the age of the 747-400 airframes and the higher fuel cost per passenger even on long routes, no wonder airlines are rapidly retiring their 747 fleets (except those who have the 747-8I). I think airlines wished the 777-300ER is still in limited production because that plane effectively became a 747 replacement.
No one would've/could've predicted a rebound to passenger travel after a globe-wide shutdown, rife eith crazy and ridiculous restrictions. While I'm saddened to see her go bye-bye, if I'm a CEO, with the information in front of me, I'd have to opt for retirement.
I've seen Boeing 747 4 times in real life but never flown onboard and i knew time is running out. Asiana Airlines is the recent airline that retired the last 747 passenger plane a month ago and the next airline that will retired the 747 this year is Russian carrier, Rossiya Airlines. As of March 2024, at least 459 Boeing 747 are still flying around the world in either passenger, cargo, or VIP planes.
The 747 is quiet and as such comfortable. The A380 is quiet and extremely comfortable even when flying economic.

Can't compare an aircraft which has not even been flying 20 years to an aircraft which has been flying over 50 years

@@kevinj2412Exactly.... what a stupid comparison they made. Plus the technology and reliability of the mid 2000s is different than the 70s. Plus alot of accidents have nothing to do with the Aircraft or manufacturer like the tenerife accident for example, more accidents are down to human error
I hate 747s! Airbus is also retiring A380s. The only solution for the sheer size of the A380 is that Airbus should Entirely retire the Aircraft!
