    James William Stobie gained considerable notoriety during his all too short life of thirty-three years as a filmmaker who self-produced documentary styled videos portraying life as a rail riding traveler-- AKA 'Stobe the Hobo." His accomplishments were many, but his time here on earth encompassed so much more than that. He was the beloved Son of Michael J Stobie (Thornton) and Mary Stobie Lechman (Wheat Ridge); Brother of Lily Ribeiro; Brother in law to Wagner Ribeiro ; Uncle to Noah and Bianca Ribeiro Longmont); Grandson of Marilyn Stobie (Ukiah, California); Nephew to Timothy Stobie (Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts) and Catherine Stobie (Fort Bragg, California); and a cherished friend to many (the World). To some he will become a legend through his life's work and to others he will be fondly remembered solely for his quirky yet lovable self as evidenced by his humor, fierce wit, compassion, dead-pan delivery, solicited and unsolicited commentary on just about anything, unbridled passion for unconventional living, mad piano skills, the enormous talent that he generously shared with all whose lives he intersected with, and countless other things. He will indeed be greatly missed by all who knew him.

      +Taylor Andre While trying to catch a train, his backpack got snagged on another train running in the opposite direction, and the train killed him, that's the news that I heard. I watched many of his videos, and he seemed to be someone that I would have liked to have known. I pray that God's Love was within him.

      I actually like RanOutOnARail's, video's better.. He's a lot more technical, and researched. Where as Jim was just whatever happened, happened. and often got him frustrated, and lacking. Still lots of good scenery !!

      @Taylor Andre In the Video where his pack straps just simply break away from the pack, he goes to an Army/Navy store and gets a grey/white camo pack that he says many times: This this is too big! Sorry, I don't have a link to the actual video but I imagine someone else can link...

    Stobe hopped the westbound into the sky, this is a quote I want to share in memory of him:
    “Still round the corner there may wait
    A new road or a secret gate
    And though I oft have passed them by
    A day will come at last when I
    Shall take the hidden paths that run
    West of the Moon, East of the Sun.”

      He doesn't look it but he was tough as nails. Had to be. He would go hiking in the mountains between trains. Walked miles for a beer. Ate out of a can and slept on grainers with flat spots. I don't know that I would have been able to keep up when I was in my 20s.

      SavedByTheBellend I saw his backpack that holds that pi-an-ee. Strobe could carry a pi-an-ee program on his laptop, even use a smaller sized keyboard, but no Strobe is a consummate artist, a perfectionist with his music, he isn't a man who settles, he refuses to compromise, it has to be full sized, despite the immersive difficulty in carrying a half ton pi-an-ee on his junkets

I was only 6 when we went out there, but I remember going to the coal mine tour and getting to go inside a dump truck. For a kid it was cool, now as an adult...ehh. But I'd like to visit the rest of the area again. I plan to take another road trip soon when the heat dies down.

    This man experienced, saw, and learned so much. His life was short but fuller than any of ours.

    • @desktorp
      @desktorp 5 років тому +3

      I have to disagree. His life was no 'fuller' than any of ours. Sure, the guy was cool but he drank excessively and as far as I can tell he had no children. Seemed to settle for a full stomach instead of a full life. Maybe if he had a family life, he could have shared his love of music in a more traditional atmosphere. Like many of us, he seemed to be searching the country and the internet for some sort of recognition in something that he never quite found.
      Lots of these comments say he 'died doing what he loved' etc, because that's the cliche you're supposed to say. However, from what I can tell, all the tongue-in-cheek humor aside, every town seemed to disappoint him a bit (a microcosm for feelings regarding the overall state of society) and in several of the videos he speaks frankly about being frustrated and bored with this pastime. In one of his final videos, he even says he feels like it's just about out of his system; that he can tell he's almost done.
      As glowy as heart-warming as it can be to glorify this man in his death, there is also a darker societal aspect to all of this that hasn't been acknowledged by any of the comments I've read so far. It's great to have left some sort of a legacy in the world for others to experience (his videos are a great accomplishment) but it's sad that didn't get to experience most of what life has to offer; raising a family, growing old enough to see the fruits of your labor, etc..
