    a scene where soren returns to his home only to find his family gone is so compelling to think about. I can't believe that they apparently cut that instead of like, the "we fall asleep" bit that seems randomly thrown in there.

      Now that bit of dialogue from the video game makes so much more sense. There's a scene in the game adaptation where the main characters arrive at Tyto Forest and Shard(Player) says that it had been burned to the ground just like Soren said.

    Hi Hannah, Well done on this video. Very impressive detective work. I was one of the animators on Legend of the Guardians so thought I’d send you some information. I can confirm that you’ve managed to piece the contents of the missing scene together really well. The only thing I’d add is that Soren and the gang knew that the ‘Pure ones’ had killed his parents and Eglantine. I can’t remember how but there was some clue that this was not an accidental forest fire.
    The scene was indeed fully animated - it was a very sensitive sequence and it had taken a long time to get the tone and emotion just right. It was a great shame it was cut and really hurt the film in my opinion. Soren is supposed to be just a kid so when he escaped from the pure ones, it made sense that he just wanted to get home. His arrival home and the revelation of the death of his parents was a powerful turning point where he made the decision to seek the guardians to try and combat the pure ones instead of simply running from them.
    I believe the reason the scene has never been shown is also the reason why it was cut from the film. It was deemed too dark in tone for an animated feature. As I recall a cut for the film was screened for Warner Bros quite late in production, they were shocked at how violent and bleak parts of the film were. I’m guessing here, but I assume they expected a more typical Blue Sky / Dreamworks-esque kids’ film with lots of jokes and funny characters. After the screening Zack’s role seemed to be somewhat diminished and the producer Chris DeFaria was flown out to Australia to oversee the completion of the film. He made many changes. As well as cutting the afore mentioned dead-parent scene he insisted Twilight be made into a funnier character (he was more of a stoic warrior before). Chris recast many of the other characters including Eglantine who was to be voiced by his daughter, Adrienne. I think many of us who worked on the film felt the first version was superior but unfortunately, since the film was changed mid-production, a completed version of that cut doesn’t exist.
    One more thing, you mentioned the pacing, I remember the length of the film being a consistent problem throughout production. It was always deemed too long, and the editors were constantly trying to cut the film’s length down even before Chris was assigned to it. Many of the scenes played slower originally, with more ‘air’ in them. In the released version this was all removed so the film does feel very rushed - characters talk immediately after one another whereas previously there was more thoughtful pauses.
    Hope that helps, well done with the video was great to hear about how much you liked the film. It was a hard but very enjoyable project to be a part of.

      Thank you so much for the insight! And a belated congratulations to you and your fellow animators for making such a stunning film, the animation has held up incredibly well. It's both fascinating and disappointing to hear there legitimately was a "Snyder cut" that got lost in the shakeup, I would have loved to have seen that version. I knew there was recasting/reworking but I didn't know it was that extensive (and true enough, movie Twilight is ultimately the character whose adaptation I was most disappointed by). It's cool to hear just how close I got to the missing scene.

    Its so hard to get a hold of the art book. I've wanted it so much. I grew up with the books, reading them from day one release back when I was in 6th grade. (I'm 30 now. So old lol.) And despite all the flaws the movie had, its still one of my favorites.
    I've wanted to make some videos like that in the past, especially concerning Nyra's character in the movie and the tiny hints of what she really is littered throughout. My favorite scene is the one where she presents Kludd and co to Metal Beak and on the screen, she has no shadow. Being a CGI grad myself, that had to be intentional. Lighting in CGI makes shadows just like real light (you have to turn them on, but still) So someone lit the scene and made Metal Beak's shadow along with the others present, but Nyra? No where to be seen. Its such a little detail that makes me wish we could have seen more.

      Dang, that's a really good connection. In the art book, the artists do mention that the fire was started by the Pure Ones, but don't elaborate beyond that. But that would make sense for the fire to spread from Tyto to The Beaks, especially on a symbolic/narrative level (Soren eventually using Kludd's own fire against him). In the art book maps, the kingdom of Tyto is right next to The Beaks.

      I bet you're right, since Metal Beak says that he and his soldiers would "set a fire to consume the owl kingdoms." Thank you for making this video, it was really interesting.
    I have to agree completely about wanting to see an expanded cut of this movie, and I'd especially love to see a sequel to it or an adaptation of the Wolves of the Beyond spin-off books. The latter especially are how I got into the series and are a fairly self contained story so they wouldn't have to worry about people having not seen the first one.
    I think they really missed the mark with the movie by missing the scenes with Soren revisiting his home and seeing what happened to it. It'd have added a lot more emotional weight and made Soren feel more believable as a character outside of just wanting to be a hero.

    • @BrochJam
      @BrochJam  3 роки тому +20

      The books are slightly darker and the story is more drawn out - the first book takes place entirely in St. Aegolius, but it gets more interesting after that. My favourite in the series is actually the spin-off book Rise of a Legend, which is a good standalone story if you don't want to commit to the whole series.

    • @hehehorf782
      @hehehorf782 2 роки тому +5

      i would say theyre pretty different, the movie is kinda a conglomerate of the first three books, but also has some events that happen way later in the books. the books were also very very dark at times so a lot of that was avoided since it was gonna be a kids movie.

    • @splendasmom
      @splendasmom 2 роки тому +11

      Totally different! Nyra isn't introduced as a villain until way later. The St. Aegolius owls are separate from the Pure Ones (the Pure Ones are later revealed as the true Big Bads). There was no Metal Beak as Kludd WAS Metal Beak. He became it later in the series and mated with Nyra and they had a chick together (Nyroc was hands down my favorite character in the series, I'd do anything to see his story animated, though it might be too dark for a kid's movie). Soren and Kludd weren't taken - Kludd was older than Soren, so he was learning to fly earlier. Kludd was recruited by the Pure Ones while still in the nest. To be inducted into the Pure Ones, you must kill someone close to you, so he pushed Soren out of the nest and Soren was subsequently taken by St. Aggies. Kludd also killed their parents. I also don't think Soren and the family had even heard of the Guardians at this point. They were just kinda living their lives. They cut out a lot of the messed up stuff that happened at St. Aggies - like the bats would come and periodically suck their blood, and Soren got in trouble and had his feathers plucked. Hortense was an amazing character they cut out that was an owl with a genetic condition that made her look like an owlet and she would smuggle out eggs with these eagles she worked with. The journey to the tree was a lot longer and more treacherous (it took the entire second book to get there). Eglantine WAS kidnapped, but it wasn't by St. Aggies but the Pure Ones (who are separate), and the Pure Ones "shattered" her, which is like brainwashing, and separate from moon blinking. Soren didn't find her until she was almost almost fully grown iirc. I don't feel like the movie really emphasized what the Pure Ones were about since they combined them with the St. Aggie's villains. The Pure Ones believed their species - Tyto Alba (barn owls) were above everyone. There were other Tyto species (Greater Sooty owls, etc. I noticed the Kludd's "rival" in the movie was one) that they accepted into the group but they were considered lower. Pretty much owl nazis.
      There's also lots of lore about the mythology of the universe and such. There are three whole books that take place like thousands of years prior and go into the legends. It's a REALLY good series and not a difficult read at all. Find them at the library!

    Great video covering a very underrated but honestly cult classic that is Ga'hoole. I first discovered the book series and then planned to watch the film after reading the first three books the movie supposedly adpated.
    I have the art book too, and it's such a shame to see the cut material. I really wished this movie was longer, or at least took place over a year. I had no idea there were 'lost scenes' like Soren returning to his hollow, like what everyone mentioned it would've given movie Soren much more emotional depth. Still, I can very much appreciate the artistic aspect of this movie adpation. It's beyond gorgeous. Like, I can write a whole essay at this point just talking about Ga'hoole lol.
    Definitely wish we could get a series, that way it would really cover over the books. (I'd gladly want to work on the character design/visual development as a bird brain artist)

    I always loved this movie. It was my earlier childhood. I also have met Rango sometime later. Maybe when i was like 7 or 8 years old. Today, i absolutely love Rango. There's a lot to talk about it but i will not. Then today, i remember this movie again and i love it as much as Rango. They have two things in common:
    *1: The animation and art style.*
    The hyper-realistic animation and art style gave up the cartoonish and traditional Pixar animation and art style. It gave the movies more immersion and feel to it or something, i don't know how to describe it. It's just... Better. I'm not saying that Pixar's is bad, but it's just the animation and art that is way ahead of it's time, not only because it's superior in many ways, but also it isn't so common.
    *2: Darker stories.*
    Some call it "themes". Rango has the western theme, but it's story is about the need for water, and the Mafia (Mayor) using this to get power. There's a lot of criminality, power and western in there. Legend Of The Guardians is about owls that are N@Z! and feel like their superiority means that the weaklings don't deserve to live in their presence. There's a lot of murdering and wars and cruelty in there.
    I hear that the movie should have been split into more movies rather than one episode because the books are way bigger in the story. It's like Harry Potter, Hobbit, and more - just that the movie adaptation was put together into one single movie. And hey, i never even knew that there were books about it, and just 10 minutes of going into the media, i know that Legend Of The Guardians should have become a Fantasy movie series like Harry Potter and Hobbit and other fantasy series with their movie adaptations.
    And hey, i would love to see that. And i haven't even read anything. That's how good this is. So sad that it's underrated.

    I watched the film as a kid and even have a DVD of it still. The film is one of several I feel are wonderful gems for children animated films. It is a shame there were not other films made, then again the way of how films are merchandised, it may be for the best.
    I was not aware of there being a book series. Though I do hope that and the film does inspire people to write, create art or just keep doing the things that makes them happy.

    It’s funny you compare this to the Snyder Cut near the end, but also I know people said his BvS film crammed in so much comic material into one movie (much of which apparently didn’t need to be in there), and that made me realize he did a similar thing to this movie. xD
    And I hope they make new content for this. I want to see a multi season series closer to the books if I have to be honest.

    • @boboboy8189

      @@yuyaricachimuel555 that because not many people can watch 3 hours detective movie. How many people can watch zodiac (2005)?
      In BvS ultimate cut we have 3 character who did investigation
      1) Clark investigate Bruce wayne / Batman
      2) Bruce Wayne / Batman investigate white Portuguese
      3) Lois lane investigate bullet from africa and how it link to lex corp and Wallace Keefe died
      Bonus scene is lex luthor investigate kryptonian body (general zod) and kryptonian technology.
      And everything is connected at climax.
      Another thing about BvS is it's not using heroes journey which marvel does. Instead it used 5 act revenge tragedy which is never been used by any superhero movies before and after. Except the final act, each act has arthouse genre vibes

    Videos that piss you off beyond all reasonable measure..... God I can only imagine how much stronger this film would have been with the burnt hollow scene in particular. I feel like Soren's parents were hastily added in at the end which cheapens the impact for me-especially how none of them even address how kludd . Yk. Tried to murder them and is now presumed dead 💀 I hope they get released someday arghh

    This was a really informative video! It is funny that the director Zack Snyder himself has talked about how there is a director's cut for this movie and detailed some of the differences that his version had. It not only included deleted scenes, but alternate music as well. He talks about it in this interview: ua-cam.com/video/T1E2L7mQopQ/v-deo.html

      Well, the blue fighting scene I showed here came from a Ga'Hoole deleted scene, specifically this one: ua-cam.com/video/W6Pq_HdVDBA/v-deo.html

    Outstanding. But, there is one thing I still don’t get it; the few lines and shots that were from the trailer should’ve been in the final film. Anyway, what if the burned hollow sequence was animated, which a few shots end up in the first trailer. A second deleted scene should’ve been in the DVD and Blu-Ray scenes, right after the previous Battle of the Ice Claws sequence which is the alternate opening of the film.
    A second deleted scene should’ve started with Kludd, Jatt and Jutt headed to Tyto forest, the same location where Soren and Kludd were taken after falling out of the tree. They possibly burned the hollow to the ground. The third deleted sequence was the burned hollow sequence in which Soren and the band travel back home, only the hollow was destroyed. Soren finds Eglantine’s doll and saw the burning sparks on the wall Soren used to draw a picture of the Ga’Hoole tree on the wall. Anyway, the various scenes from the Lightning script should’ve been in the DVD features too. I really wish the burned hollow sequence was featured on the DVD and Blu-Ray special features alongside the Battle of the Ice Claws deleted sequence too. Anyway, I have a soft spot for Ga’Hoole too. I really think I practically loved Owls so much as I do! That’s quite enjoyable.

    the battles of the ice claws are one of the scenes that has nothing to do with the books, although this also seems to have led him to a war where the pure one led them into a conflict which according to the book is not solved, in the book it has nothing to do with the deleted scene since it refers to the war of the northern kingdoms and not the war of the pure one

    What is it with WB and the MPAA cutting Zack Snyder movies for theatrical release? "Dawn of the Dead" (for the MPAA), "Watchmen", "Sucker Punch" (also for the MPAA), "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", (he was Executive Producer on) "Suicide Squad", "Justice League" (kinda?), (not for theatrical, but) "Zack Snyder's Justice League" (not letting him use John Stewart's Green Lantern), and now I hear of this.
