Excellent video I'm a huge Lakers fan I remember this game vividly watching it at home with my dad(RIP) who was a huge Lakers fan but when the Jazz came to Utah the Lakers became his 2nd team which made for an interesting father/son rivalry. When the Jazz would play the Lakers my dad used to make me go downstairs to watch the games and would constantly talk trash through the vent or stomp on the floor and lay it on thick of the Jazz won and if the Lakers won which began to happen starting the 1999-2000 season my dad would tell me he was a Lakers fan long before I was born lol. I do remember when my dad took me to see the 1988 showtime Lakers vs the Malone/Stockton led Jazz. He had tickets to game 3 & 4 right behind the basket at the old Salt Palace. I caught so much crap from jazz fans( which would be a constant theme at games in the future) but game 4 when the Lakers won I had the bragging rights and I was only 8 years old at the time let the Jazz fans know what time it was ( another constant theme at games in the future which led to numerous incidents which I never started only finished) the Jazz fans behind us kept asking my dad if I was a serious diehard Lakers fan as I was portraying my dad let them know I was. Off topic a bit but great memories this night the birth of The Black Mamba

I'm glad that Rik Smits was able to make an all star team so that he will always have that on his resume because he had developed into a legitimate top centers in the league. He won't be thought of that way by people who just go to his scoring average to form their own opinion. He's one of those players you need to see play and know how good play affects a game overall. Like Mario Elie.
Absolutely. Rik had exceptional footwork for a guy 7’4” and had great spacing and court awareness. He knew he wasn’t going to be the greatest athlete on the court, but he was an exceptionally smart player that knew just where he needed to be. How many times did Rik block out the opposing center enabling one of the Davises to grab the board? Countless.
He'd have made more all star teams if his career didn't coincide with 4 of the greatest centers in NBA history also competing against Mutombo and Zo who were no slouches themselves.
@@zlinedavid To use LeBron as some context, the narrative for fans and even some analyst (not much need to also mention LeBron himself) was that LeBron didn't have any help. But in his first go around with Cleveland, he may have still lost but at least he wouldn't have been swept by San Antonio if he would've realized that the help that he needed was to develop his own shot. He called himself the greatest player in the world, and the who's consider a top defender in the league with Bruce Bowen sags below the free throw line while LeBron is at the top of the key. You don't need anybody who's consider the greatest, but replace that with somebody like Byron Scott, not one team would consider giving that much space. And just a little bit of a threat to score with that much space does wonders for opening up a teams offense.

Just a noticeable error as you mentioned at 3:26 that Rik Smits was drafted in 1998, but then mentioned his clutch moment in the 1995. I believe you meant 1988. Incredible video none of the less 👌🏽
A lot of people downplayed Kobe's defense, but he really is a freaking elite defender especially early on when he does not have 100% of the offensive load for the Lakers
Can someone explain why the Rick Fox foul on Jalen Rose at the end of the game was 1 shot (taken by Reggie Miller) and the ball back to the Pacers? Was it a weird rule in effect back then? I’ve watched the actual game footage and the commentators treat it as common place and there was no technical or anything.
That rule still exists today. It's a "Away from-the-play foul", read section 10 of the "RULE NO. 12: Fouls and Penalties" NBA rule book. It's posted online for all to read. It basically means if you foul before the throw-in, you get 1 free throw by any player, plus possession. If it's an offensive foul, same thing just in reverse. So if Jalen Rose fouled Rick Fox as an example.
@@Mave-rick thank you, I don’t know why it seems like such a foreign call to me. I feel like I never see it but maybe I’m just not paying attention. I just think it’s so weird that they had a foul to give and this rule kinda makes that not matter too.
@@Catdaddyacab I haven't checked how many times it's been called this season, but I've already seen it. It's uncommon however as it hurts your team in late game situations.
Kobe actually led the Lakers in the 97 game against Michael. He came off the bench and put up 34 against the Bulls while (slightly) slowing MJ down. There was no Shaq, and they lost, but Kobe showed there he'd perform under pressure without Shaq.
Miller Time was one of the greatest shooters of all-time. It's both flattering and frustrating to be on a list with other HOF basketball legends that never took the hardware home like Chuck Barkley, Patrick Ewing, and Stockton and Malone. He's in good company with those guys. I gotta feeling that Olajuwan woukd be without a ring as well had Jordan not retired in his prime to play baseball for two years
You guys and gals do such a fantastic job of portraying the high drama and soaring tapestry of individual hopes and dreams that make sports so wonderful.
This isn’t a knock on Reggie. You realize how good Reggie was when you have to highlight his failures, because there weren’t many. Dude was as clutch as they come.
This might be a hot take, and if so, so-be-it. The Lakers were truly "Shaq's team" from the 96’ to 99’ season’s respectively. As soon as Kobe entered elite status (i.e. became "The Heir To Air”) he didn’t wait for the torch to be passed…he just took it! And if Kobe not wilting under the immense pressure of Shaq fouling out in a pivotal game but to carry the team to victory isn’t enough proof that Kobe had long surpassed the "Robin" label by that point - what else could he have done to stake his claim other than win two without "Superman?"
Tremendous work, polarizing perfectly how both were great players on their own. This year UCL finals are back in Instabul so you MUST do a rewinder of 2005, we call agree those the greatest European finals of all time.

Reggie will forever be one of the greatest ever, despite nevery winning the Larry O'Brien trophy.
Steve Nash too
As a Pacer fan I remember watching this game as a kid. I wanted this championship so bad. I feel like the Pacers really pushed the Lakers in this series and for a 4-2 win it was such a roller coaster. Kobe stepped up when he needed to, and we did not have an answer for Shaq.
I was about to head out the door to get some work done but you uploaded and now I'm on the porch blazing.
Reggie was my favorite player for the longest. Literally running back to behind the 3 point line and sinking it is such a g move
I walked into the room when my parents were watching game 5 versus the Knicks in 1994 also known as the Spike Lee game.
Ben Hoots fanatic ever since and Reggie Miller is my all-time favorite player to this day.
Reggie is the perfect example of it wasn't meant to be for him to win. He ran into so many great teams and players. It just wasn't meant to be. Sucks because he was one of the best to ever play.
rewinder is such a great series. being born in 92, I missed some great eras of basketball that I can only appreciate now. I'll watch them all. More Bird and Magic, please!
Secret base: can you get a Reggie Miller "Untitled" please! He had 3 different windows, with the last ended by the Malice. This would be a classic video!
6:53 - Today I learned that the Lakers' last-ever (meaningful) game at the Fabulous Forum ended with the home fans booing Kobe Bryant off the court. Oof.
Hey for another rewinder episode you should do Germany's WC win in 2014 or maybe Liverpool's penalty shootout Champions league win in 2005 against AC Milan
Reggie miller also thought he was going to stop MJ from making the finals in his last season.. “this is it, I am going to retire Michael Jordan”… what a career Reggie Almost had.. hell, the malice in the palace was another year he thought he should have won it.
Miller made it to the 2000 finals but he ran into jordan 2.0 Kobe
A deep rewind on big papi grand slam vs 2013 tigers. The tigers were loaded that year changed everything
I didn’t know Cheryl Miller’s younger brother played basketball.
Ugh....🙄
*Didn't know Reggie's Miller's sister played basketball
#FixedThatShit lol
You guys are getting triggered by a Seinfeld joke. Get out of your basements more often.

I think a lot of people forget that kobe didn't come out the gate hot. He struggled for the first few seasons in his career before he turned into black mamba!
Kobe(r.i.p)in the thumbnail is one of the most iconic picture of him, calming himself down! He has a fuse inside of him that's ready to detonate but he knows he still has work to do!!!!
Seen kobe his entire career but still amazes me how he handled himself like MJ, that's how you pay tribute to your idol, even little stuff like dribbling the ball he really looked like MJ out there.
Great Vid! Can you please make a deep dive on Mike Piazza's time with the Marlins and what lead up to the surprising trade.
#GuruBasketballKieroSays The good old days in LA....
WE LOVE AND MISS YOU KOBE
I miss Kobe! It still hurts when thinking about his untimely demise. 😥
Sad here as well 😢
Always hurts! Made me emotional for a good week. Crazy it’s been 3 years already.
Damn. I miss Kobe.
I miss this whole era of basketball. The game was so much more complex than the “three and D” era.
Thank you Joe, and god bless Kobe, I miss him very much.
I just started watching this video but I just want to say that was a great intro to the rewind segment. writing, editing , and delivery were on point!
This rewinder was amazing. Good job on another great video.

My heart was pounding through my chest during this moment! Great video!
Bob Costas sounded so disappointed Reggie missed. All excited saying “for three!” Then in a calm tone voice “lakers have a 3-1 lead” 🤨
Asking for a Pete Weber “Who do you think you are? I am” rewinder.
RIP Kobe 🙏🙌
Unrelated but I can't wait for the rewind on Dibu Martinez's 120+ minute save in the world cup final. Greatest save of all time
Rewinders from the shaq kobe era are the best
Reggie miller was like a poor man’s jerry west: clutch AF, great shooter played entire career with one team gave his heart to them, and always came really close to winning it all.. this could’ve been his one ring like Jerry got but Kobe and Shaq wouldn’t messed around and started a dynasty
3:24 ... 1988, no 98
I liked this video. Really good summary and explanation to help understand the significance of the moment.
I love this series of videos, this narration made me laugh out loud multiple times, keep it up!
Any video that doesn’t have Seth narrating suffers as a result
I still remember that 2000 finals! RIP Kobe 8!
Game 4 of the 2000 finals is arguably my all time favorite Kobe performance!!!
Long Live The Mamba!!!
looking at the play, reggie miller had the option to fake the shot and pass back… i wonder how that would have played out
I don’t think dude knows how to use the word “although.”
Just a noticeable error as you mentioned at 3:26 that Rik Smits was drafted in 1998, but then mentioned his clutch moment in the 1995. I believe you meant 1988. Incredible video none of the less 👌🏽
Indiana pacers would been a dynasty but always ran into a more superior team in the conference finals
I know you dont do hockey much...but id love to see a video on Paul Kariyas goal back from injury
An opposition like Mario Elie publicly shaming the LA crowd for booing Kobe is interesting as hell. 7:05
You guys always amaze me! Thank you for such great content!
A lot of people downplayed Kobe's defense, but he really is a freaking elite defender especially early on when he does not have 100% of the offensive load for the Lakers
It's a JOKE to even consider that Shaq was the MVP of that team over Kobe!!
Ah yes the night where a young Kobe Bryant's has taken off. We're still missed you. RIP Mamba.
Smits was drafted 1988. 3:25.
Kobe actually led the Lakers in the 97 game against Michael. He came off the bench and put up 34 against the Bulls while (slightly) slowing MJ down. There was no Shaq, and they lost, but Kobe showed there he'd perform under pressure without Shaq.
Dikembe Mutombo embracing the basketball after upsetting the top seeded Supersonics deserves a deep rewind
Bob Costas truly is terrible. He can take any moment and remove all tension, excitement and drama.
Miller Time was one of the greatest shooters of all-time. It's both flattering and frustrating to be on a list with other HOF basketball legends that never took the hardware home like Chuck Barkley, Patrick Ewing, and Stockton and Malone. He's in good company with those guys. I gotta feeling that Olajuwan woukd be without a ring as well had Jordan not retired in his prime to play baseball for two years
Young Kobe had so much swag man.
imma need that reggie miller untitled y'all
I can’t believe the LA Times and people in the Staples Center were really booing a young Kobe. They didn’t deserve him.
It ain't just Lakers fans that get upset when their players play badly.
Back when players played to win, not just for empty stats
Still find it hard to believe Secret Base hasn't done an Untitled video about Reggie Miller.
Rip mamba🐍
As a Pacers fan I just want 1 title 😂
Maybe Haliburton will lead your team to the promised land?
Least favorite narrator
He's waaaay that boring lady with the robotic voice who tries to tell weak jokes
You guys and gals do such a fantastic job of portraying the high drama and soaring tapestry of individual hopes and dreams that make sports so wonderful.
Reggie not missing Rick wide open under the basket
This isn’t a knock on Reggie. You realize how good Reggie was when you have to highlight his failures, because there weren’t many. Dude was as clutch as they come.
This video was unnecessarily long. Oh my goodness
HAHA That was cold to recommend the legendary chasedown by Tayshaun Prince. Cold, but fitting. Great job as always Joe!
Rik Smits was drafted in 1988 not 1998. Surprised you didn’t check that
This might be a hot take, and if so, so-be-it.
At 3:25 you said that he was drafted in 1998 but it should be 1988. Wanted to give that heads up
Miller's career 3-point percentage is only 5 points lower than Kobe's career FIELD GOAL percentage.
Tremendous work, polarizing perfectly how both were great players on their own.
This year UCL finals are back in Instabul so you MUST do a rewinder of 2005, we call agree those the greatest European finals of all time.
Content of the video is good as usual with this series, but the narration could be better. It is noticeably inferior to most of the other videos from the series.
Rik was drafted in 88 not 98
