    The 2” poly we chose for our off grid gravity fed water system has been an absolute pain in the butt to work with. We were warned that this stuff was challenging, but we didn’t know just HOW challenging! All things considered, we have no regrets using it in our system. Join us as we make the final pull to get this installed… we did it even though the critics said we’d never be able to.

    I used to run a lot of wire in buildings and when we put it in a tight conduit the lube was a life saver. The stuff we had was kind of a translucent greenish color and we always just called it "snot"

    Reading the comments about use the truck or the winch on the 4 wheeler if you took note of the rope they were using it would have broken with the load that the machinery would have applied but once the rope was able to be removed they replaced it with the chain then the web strapping which has a bigger breaking load.

      sorry to deny man, but the load applied by the poly is always the same once its moving, since the dinamic friction is stated. so the rope feels the same stress, pulled by the car, the wife or even by the cat

    I think you guys work so well together. It has to feel great each time you make a big step forward. I like the comments of everyone saying what you should have done but you are the guys that are doing it and if things didn't work out you would have tried something else. I've been watching for a while now and if I have figured out only one thing it is that you guys don't give up. Ice cream looks great and have a great day. Thank you for sharing!

    Hindsight (it's a wonderful thing) - water is a lubricant for both the pipe and the casing. Would have washed the grit and dust out also. Keep it running and occasionally add cheap dish wash liquid. Well done. You are an inspiration.

  • @virgilpate
    @virgilpate 7 років тому +3

    Congrats on getting that done! Don't be stingy in the future with the lube, shove big handfuls of lube in there before your pipe or cable goes into the conduit. Also, I'd consider 50% max fill on the conduit but it's relative to distance and total degrees of bend.
    Also, be careful if you ever use that rope! If it's twisted up in your poly then you could cut thru your poly the same way you cut thru your pipe with the pull rope. I've never worked with the poly but we used to cut conduit with string or rope when I was a kid. It actually works great in tight spaces.

    Good job, lots of work! Sharp edge on the end of the pipe will catch on every little bend and connection. I would have probably tried cutting the neck end off of a plastic bottle and used it on the front end of the pipe as a torpedo tip of sorts with the rope going through the mouth of the neck opening. This eliminates the edges and provides a smooth tapered flowing front tip which you could lube if necessary. Love that cat!

    • @DEADB33F
      @DEADB33F 7 років тому

      Blowtorch to melt the end a bit and form it into a bit of a dome shape is a more reliable method.
      Have done that before with a 3" main. Worked well.
      It's also a good idea to lube the conduit by pulling a sponge doped in goop through with the rope first.

    Bearing in mind you guys are doing this all yourself, well done not using the ATV. The human "touch" element means you didn't rip up your Poly or Encasement, surely? A winch may have helped, but you'd still have had to had hands-on. Well done! Grit and motivation won the day(s) :D

    I'm learning so much and will be using it on my system when it's that time. I drilled a well and have most of the parts for my air compressor windmill. I'm using compressed air to pump the water so i don't need to rely on electricity.

      Here is a tip. Talk to them personally and educate them, they would appreciate it more being mature about it rather than bagging them in a public forum. Defamation is more damaging to the giver. They are learning as they go like most people do. Try and help than what you are doing right now.

      he doesn't ask how to do things he talks like he knows how to do everything, and talks about how he gets so frustrated trying to teach her how to do things. then when people make suggestions and comments he puts out the next video and gets all Lippy about people writing comments and how they don't understand.

    First of all, job done!!!! 👍
    For people that want to do a simalar job:
    Always try to do all the cables/tubes in 1 go.
    Now you get resistance from the cable/tube already in the conduite, with risk on damage on the already laid cable/tube (burnmarks). Further use lots of lubrication and make the connection between rope and cables/tubes as flexiable and pointy as possible.

    great tip for the weeds growing between the hot tub stairs. get a bag of water softener salt and and dump it into a 5 gallon bucket, than pour in 5 gallon of boiling/hot water and let it sit for 24 hours, stir it up and it will be saturated with as much salt as possible, than pour that into a pump spray bottle(weed sprayer) and spray it on the steps. within 24-48 hours all the weeds will be dead and will kill the roots at the soil and the salt in the soil under the stairs will keep them from growing back for a couple years. i do that for my dirt driveway every couple years and works amazing.

    I have never done this before so just a question. Would it possibly have been easier to lay the pipe in the conduit 10 feet at a time. Then glue joints as you go or is this the common way of doing it? once again just asking. I have done a lot of other stuff but never ran pipe or wire in conduit to be barried.

    While PVC "pipe" and PVC "conduit" can both glue into the same size couplings, PVC conduit (grey colored) has sweep elbows that are much larger radius. The "sweep elbows" are designed for pulling heavy electrical cables through them without hanging up on sharp bends. Sweep elbows are actually the same material as straight conduit pipe which have been heated and formed into those gradual sweeping curves. If you had known you needed to pull the other pipe through the white pvc? You could have carefully heated the pipe with a electric heat gun to form those gradual curves, or, even just glued in some grey conduit sweep elbows into the run of white pvc. It would have made the job easier. Congratulations on your determination and getting the job done, though. It saved the day.
    When I had to run black polyethylene pipe AND electrical wiring out to my well site through ground as rocky as yours I laid it all out in the trench and then separately slipped (one at a time) 10 to 20 foot remnant sections of black corrugated flexible poly drain over the whole mess coupling the corrugated together with duct tape in places.... The rocks and boulders back fill were kept from hurting my water and power lines by the corrugated drain serving as a protective "conduit". The building supply sold me all their corrugated drain remnants cheaply. My "electric lines" were salvaged cable tv mainline co-axial cables (solid copper centers between 8 and 10 gauge thick) I run a 30 amp 240v service 250 feet out to my well and to an RV hookup site for 30 years now with no problems. The cable coax was new on a large spool and purchased cheaply at a salvage place. I ran 3 (a neutral and 2 hot lines).

    great video. i was wondering why you didn't use the wheeler to pull the line. and a small amount of water would lube the pipe soap up further . working with underground utilities, gas ,electric and water . we usually pulled the lines with an excavator and although its messy we would lube the lines and pour water in if there was pitch. because the lube is water soluble soap

    I remember the power company trying to pull jacketed cable (Cablecon) through a trench made w/ a trencher (not a backhoe/excavator) from the power pole to the service panel. They used their extendable boom that's used for setting poles and attached it to the end of the cable, retract (pulling) ....... worked great.

    You might try to use a torch or a hair dryer to bend the 4" pipe to have sweep bend other than a factory elbow. That will make it easier to pull and to install over your lines already pulled.

    Did you guys gut a bevel in the edges and try to use that for easier passage?

    Can't seem to find out how your cisterns are going to be filled. They seems to be on top of a hill. Is there a spring or creek? Glad to see the pipe pop out at the bottom of the hill.

    I hope you closed the ends of the pipe to keep out intruders or mud should you get a sudden gully washer storm? You two work well together.
