First heard this song at a Hospice Christmas tree-lighting ceremony a few days ago. Cried all the way through. Almost 82 years old, lost my husband of 38 years last spring. I tell everyone, love your family and spend time with them now, because once they are gone, there are only the memories.

I hear you 😢💔 One of my beloved family members died just this past February, and now every morning I wake up and . . . just for one fleeting moment, before I remember . . . I feel normal and happy. But then, immediately I'm stabbed by sudden pain and loss when I remember. . . and it feels like part of my own body and soul have been cut off. . . and I feel so lost and alone. 😞😪
But I believe someday, we will all be together again, when it's my time to go. In heaven, she will come running to greet me, her arthritis will be gone, and she'll finally be able to see me, her eyes won't be blind the way they had been for years before she died.
Like you said, we need to tell our family how much we love them . . . ❤️ 💔 ❤️

jarmbyfalls: I've been enjoying this song, in so many of its dimensions, and (yes) crying along with the words for more than 50 years. Every moment is a death. Every moment a birth. Like the song sings, it's a circle and each passing is a place you can only look back at while feeling the adventure of the next place.
I once spoke to a man who was about to celebrate his second new century, my first, having remembered the block party his parents gave to bring in the year 1900 when he was six. I asked him how he deals with all the loses. After he went through the long list, including two of his children ("natural causes"), all his heroes, the music that he loved, and lots more he told me, while in his wheel chair, with his ulcerated eye and weakened body, that he still gets very excited for the plans he has for tomorrow. He knew the circle game very well.

I sing it to my sons, and even though they're embarrassed at their mother's singing, I hope that they will begin to understand the passages they will go through in their lives, and share it with their children whenever they may come along.

After just sending my one and only child off to college, the meaning of this song has never hit harder. I CANNOT for the life of me get through the song without crying. the line that gets me EVERY time is "and they tell him take your time it won't be long now til you drag your feet to slow the circles down." Try telling that to a wide-eyed teenager who can't wait for their life to start. It truly, truly seems like yesterday she was catching those dragonflies in a jar. Life is amazingly fast. No matter how hard I try, I can't slow those damned circles down

Your comment has brought me to tears. I raised my grandson from the time he was 10 until he turned 18. A very bright, loving, deep thinking, trumpet playing, art contest winning tall, slender, handsome, young man. Because of the sad hole, that not being with his parents, left in his life, in confusion he dropped out of school early. This past summer he came to me and said, "Nanna, I've something very important to tell you." He had been volunteering with homeless people for years and came upon another young man who had been traveling the country like a hobo for some time. My grandson decided to go off to see the country with him and to find his way in the world. He and I rode the amtrak Coast Starlight up the California and Oregon coast together when he was 5. We had gotten off another train in Emeryville, CA and I had purchased the CD with Circle Game on it. When I hear this song, I can see myself as a teenager, my children and my grandson, walking up and down the aisles of that train. I am consoled by the fact that he sounds happier than since he was in marching band. I tried to tell his mom and dad not to grow up to quickly. Then I tried to tell him the same thing. But we are all captive on the carousel of time, like Joni says and there are just some things that our children and grandchildren have to learn for themselves. Your comment brought the tears, but they are good tears. I have to let myself cry, and let the reality touch my soul, now and then.

The spirit soul is the symptom of life, it is eternal, unlike the body ( like an outer dress) which is temporary. When there is birth, there is death. Birth means the soul enter into the womb of mother through the father; Death means the soul leaves the body to take birth again in the wheel of Samsara. When our consciousness become purified, birth and death no more. Birth and death is pertaining to attachment to material body. We are not this body, we are pure consciousness. Consciousness is the symptom of soul. This individual soul has been transmigrate to different types of body countless times. Bhakti Yoga is the way to break through the shackle of repeated birth and death. Yoga means our activities is linked/connected with the Supreme creator through prayers, mantra, rituals, unalloyed devotion, spiritual advancement through reading and cultivating spiritual knowledge. There are two worlds - material and spiritual. The spiritual world is where the soul belongs.

Just heard Joni’s rendition of Both Sides now from her Newport performance last year, as a 79 year old woman. If that is all she ever did with her life is compose and record The Circle Game and Both Sides Now would be a life well lived! I don't think I could sing this song in front of anyone. I can't get through listening to it without crying.
It makes me think of how short life is and so many other things. This song strikes a chord with so many for different reasons. Even though it brings me to tears everytime I listen to it, it is a reminder not to waste time, to hug your wife, kids, family, friends, and to be a better person during the time we have left on this earth. This woman gave me my voice...I was born in 1960 and watched my brothers, all older than me in '69 take off for the Woodstock festival only a couple of hours from our home in Brooklyn, NY. I was 9 then and very shy. Just before the festival one of my bothers who was a musician heard me in my room singing along with my Joni Mitchell album.. I had all of them....and taught myself the guitar chords to each of her songs so I could sing to myself when I was blue. One day my brother told me..."You sound just like her...you should be very proud" In later years, when I became a mother, I sang to my babies as I cradled each one in my carrier on our journey to the market and around the apartment, lulling each to sleep. To this day, when I feel the blues coming on, I sing to myself while going about my day. My heart broke when I heard she was rushed to the hospital. I cried and prayed...There is no one, absolutely no one who compares to this Angel on Earth. She is radiant!

So true Randy! When she started out in the Mid. 60's the music Industry was run by men and "women in folk music" were still a novelty no matter how good they were. Most women wrote songs for others, mostly men or women groups.
A great example is Carole King who wrote everyone in the business, like The Shirelles, "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" -1960, "Take Good Care Of My Baby" - Bobby Vee.. And Joni Mitchell wrote Woodstock in David
Geffen's Apt. in New Your City.. He thought that if she went to she wouldn't be able to get to a Dick Cavett interview
on TV, Monday on time. "Must of felt kinda silly when they watched the tube and saw all the bands getting out on
      helicopters

Rusty Schoolbus To some extent I think it was less the fact that she was a woman than that the guys in the industry didn't think she had a "mainstream" enough sound. Hence, Judi Collins hits it big with "Both Sides Now" before many of us (myself included, I'm ashamed to admit), had even heard the name Joni Mitchell. (And, FYI, I'll take Joni's version of BSN over Collins' any time.)

This song is so beautifully written and performed by Joni. I get goosebumps on my goosebumps when I listen to it. It is one of the most relatable songs ever written in my humble opinion. I have heard it was written as a response of sorts to Neil Young's "Sugar Mountain" which is about not wanting to grow older, " You can't be twenty on Sugar Mountain, though you're thinking you're leaving there to soon". When we are young we want nothing more than to grow up faster and once we've achieved that, we want to turn the time back or at least slow it down. They say "Youth is wasted on the young" and to a point, they are right. We don't appreciate what a special time it is during our lives and it seems, nobody seems to bother to tell us. Not that I'm sure it would have made a difference. Life is so very ironic. It's only been the past few years that I have wanted to put my feet down and slow the circle that seems to be picking up speed. All I know is that I have accumulated many great memories throughout my life and when I take my last breath, it's those treasured memories that will be all I take with me. All the material things people work so hard to obtain, is for not. You spend so much time working for it, you are missing out on making the only thing that in the end, will truly matter. The memories you made during your lifetime. The rest is simply fluff.

+MissDistarr60 - Here is info from Wiki: In a concert at the Paris Theatre in London on October 29, 1970,[2] Joni Mitchell, who was already friends with Neil Young by the time he wrote this song, opened her song "Circle Game" with this speech:Mitchell: "In 1965 I was up in Canada, and there was a friend of mine up there who had just left a rock'n'roll band (...) he had just newly turned 21, and that meant he was no longer allowed into his favourite haunt, which was kind of a teeny-bopper club and once you're over 21 you couldn't get back in there anymore; so he was really feeling terrible because his girlfriends and everybody that he wanted to hang out with, his band could still go there, you know, but it's one of the things that drove him to become a folk singer was that he couldn't play in this club anymore. 'Cause he was over the hill. (...) So he wrote this song that was called "Oh to live on sugar mountain" which was a lament for his lost youth. (...) And I thought, God, you know, if we get to 21 and there's nothing after that, that's a pretty bleak future, so I wrote a song for him, and for myself just to give me some hope. It's called The Circle Game

I used to sing this all the time In kindergarten. I’m 17 now, and I had completely forgot about this song until my dad played it on his USB. So many nostalgic memories came back to me, and the more I listen to this, the more I understand the depth and meaning to the lyrics.

I was that young man. After the war in the Pacific, my parents and my sister and I started a new life in a small college town in Missouri where dad taught. When I came of age, I went to war, too. I hope our children on down the ages never have to go to war again. I shudder to hear the warmongers who want to send our children off to die. There must be better answers.

Sure, when the politicians, stand-up and declare war on whomever, Let THEM take up arms and fight the politicians THEMSELVES, rather than the "lost generations" of youth who have fought, died and for those Politians who continue on living, long after the war is over. Simplist YES but unfortunatley it will be always the young and disinfranchised that end up on the short end.

me too. It is like we feel the energy of the song and it takes us to a place of sadness. I am trying to hear it kindly and lovingly and move from sadness back to okness. I know it is ok to have emotions, it is ok to feel them and it is important to recognize that they do not own us and that we do not have to go to sadness so often, that instead we can watch sadness pass through us. That we are not owned by our emotions. I know these things to be true...Just reaching out to another sensitive soul. (see my reply below to Hands)

I’m 65 now and I can remember when I was in my late teens early 20s liking a lot of Joni Mitchell’s songs but for some reason I did not care for this one. Maybe I didn’t take the time to listen to the words. Now that I’m old this song has so much more meaning it almost makes me cry every time I here it . God Bless you Joni Mitchell ❤️….

I didn't like the chord progressions - maybe that was why you didn't. The chords never really changed when my ear wanted them to, so it kind of stagnated. But the words more than make up for that.

+Audrey Didier When we are young, even though we loved this music, we were young and arrogant enough to believe we understood the meaning behind these amazing lyrics. It's not until you have lived a life, do you TRULY understand the meaning of the song. And that can change 4 or 5 times during your lifetime, depending on your perspective at any given moment. These kinds of songs change throughout our lives depending where we are at that moment in time. Simply my humble and 55 year old opinion:) Music is magical.

+MissDistarr60 - absolutely! it was truly a 'golden era' - there were great musicians always, but never
with the freedom/desire for expressive freedoms like the 60's and 70's -
just as there has always been commercialism but never on the level that
it's been since the 80's through to today - the 60-70's era was truly a special moment in time

I was about 11 or 12 at summer camp when I learned this song sitting by the fire at night before bedtime. Many years later I found out the lovely campfire song I thought I'd never hear again was actually a famous song by Joni Mitchell, and that I could hear it any time I wanted. And when I eventually had kids of my own, I sang to them this song every night when it was time for bed. And like many of you commenting here, I also have tears in my eyes as I hear the song.

Flat out, unsurpassed genius. Nothing, absolutely nothing, compares in beauty and originality. We have devolved. The world is no longer able to produce something that uniquely beautiful. The only sense that grows keener with age is the sense of “appreciation”. Her music gets better and better as I age.

I first heard this song about 10 years ago (I am almost 19) in a school music class and I fell in love with it. I hadn't listened to it in quite a while but I mentioned Joni Mitchell to one of my friends today and she had no idea who that was and it made me so sad for our generation. We have lost such great music to the crap that is played on the radio today. I feel like this is a song that everyone needs to hear at least once in their life.
