StuccoPlastering Thanks Capt., so....it's 100 lbs of portland & 300 lbs of sand? I know HD & Loews sells a variety of products including Rapip Set™, I've used Rapid Set™ several times before, you HAVE to work quick with it...lol, but it's a little on the expensive side, a 90lb bag of portland is under $10 & a bag of sand is right at $4, mixing your on is much more cost effective, but I don't need to tell you that Pro...

Kirk, I am want to plaster a ~300 square foot CMU wall and I have a few questions: 1) The base of the wall appears to have a few holes through which water drains. How should I fix this before proceeding? 2) How much mixture do I need assuming a 3 to 1 concrete to sand apportionment? Do you have a rule of thumb of mixture to square footage of finished wall? Thank you!
Howdy John, go around the drainage areas. I eyeball all my jobs and know how much cement material is necessary, myself. Thus no need to measure and calculate. Live long and Plaster Teaching the world how to plaster one Video at a time.
Kirk, I'm having trouble getting the stucco to stick to the CMU 2' tall 20' long wall that has a poured cap. I did the back side first and am looking for a smooth finish :(. I put 50/50 weld cret & water first, and am using green core from HD. Is there an additive that I can use to increase the adhesive properties? Maybe I didn't go thick enough on the back side, because I went to float it and in some areas it just came off. Thank you, and love your channel.
Evening Trevor, your wall might be either hot as in the sun, or dusty or not hydrated properly. FYI, With a bonding agent, the only time you dilute it is to apply stucco color finishes over painted surfaces. Try misting the wall with water, not dripping wet but misting so the new stucco absorbs into the moist CMU walls. 😉
Love your videos Kirk you are a man of talent, great attitude, and work ethic. I'm a jack of all trades and have a basement with cinder block walls which were painted (thick stuf) but have peeling paint and white powder coming through (potassium nitrate?) and some areas have black which I guess is mold. So it is one ugly basement. I guess the best approach is to dig up the outside and spread some tar and perhaps add drainage. But for the inside, do you think I could put a plaster finish over it? Would mold soak through? I know you use a gas powered pressure washer, could I clean the wall with acid (muriatic?) instead? Are the blocks perhaps beyond help? thank you!
Good evening Rob, if it were me, and you can't pressure wash the inside, wear a mask and wire brush the walls well, this takes forever, then wash with water to clean off duct, now your ready to paint or apply a stucco finish. Muriatic acid won't help in this case. Hi guys! Been watching a ton of your videos to try and figure out my albatross... 200'x6' cinder block wall (both sides) that has those "floral" design type of blocks near the top row for "looks" that I will need to fill in before coating. I wanted to try a skim coat but I'll need some sort of lath to hide those goofy floral blocks. Also there are columns every 8' or so, square and have a 1" reveal greater than the wall. Both higher by an 1" an poking out of the wall 1". How can I skim this! No $$, I don't know the proper mix design and never stucco'd!! Not all hope is lost, I'm a contractor. But always subbed stucco type work ( they've always SUCKED compared to you guys!!) Lots of concrete work (flatwork, structual, countertops & sinks) so I'm kinda with ya on terminology.... Best plan of attack, mix design and I'll work on my technique! "OK guys"!! Thanks!! Patrick
HI Patrick Drury, thank you, you may not have to lath the Floral designs you are referring to. Send me a picture to kirk4stucco@gmail.com I'll let you know the simplest way to cover those decorative area's. Best wishes, Kirk and family
Hey Patrick, I recieved the picture, easy solution. If it were me after the pressure washing has dried, I would simply spread over the designs with a thick mud, just the top block and fill the holes on both sides, The next day skim coat as usual. If you apply the mesh it would have little benefit except save you 5 dollars in mud while spending 100 dollars in lath and 6 hours in time to attach the mesh to the blocks. When I say stiff mud I mean it has to be thick enough to fill the holes without sliding or falling out. Going to make a stucco dude out of you yet. Best wishes, kirk and family
Nice work! For the mix, I know u use 3 parts Portland cement and sand. Is that Riverside Cement or just Portland? Does it matter? Also what type of sand did u use? Regular washed sand or a finer sand for better smoothness? Keep up the great work guys! Merry Christmas!

Sean Waby, good question, Thistle Board Finish is a gypsum finish plaster I would guess similar to Diamond veneer plaster made by British Gypsum, I have not seen this material here in the U.S. I would imagine it's here someplace i just have not seen it, I have applied all types of exterior cement plasters to interiors, taping mds and compounds, structo-lite as well as most veneer plasters but I'm certain I haven't tried every product available. I'm planning to repaint the walls using a roller but I want to smooth out the wall first - can I simply roughen it up and use drywall mud to smooth it out?
Morning Eddie Spruce, yes you can do this, clean and scrape all the loose paint and or dust completely off, then apply a liquid bonding agent and skim with whatever product you wish to use, such as a sheetrock compound, Structo-lite base coat, Diamond veneer plaster, or even taping mud which will take several coats, there are many ways and materials to plaster a wall with. I am want to plaster a ~300 square foot CMU wall and I have a few questions:
1) The base of the wall appears to have a few holes through which water drains. How should
I fix this before proceeding?
2) How much mixture do I need assuming a 3 to 1 concrete to sand apportionment? Do you have a rule of thumb of mixture to square footage of finished wall?
Thank you!
Howdy John, go around the drainage areas.
I eyeball all my jobs and know how much cement material is necessary, myself.
Thus no need to measure and calculate.

@@StuccoPlastering thank you very much Kirk, I'm fine with working slow, a little at a time and will try it, I can also practice plastering and see how it holds up as I go!
What exact "mud" are you using? I heard you say Portland Cement, but is that it? Quikrete Portland Cement? or are you mixing something else together? Thanks so much! Your videos are excellent.
Good afternoon David, it was riverside plastic mixed with three-times the sand and the one part cement plaster.
However, any cement plaster will work just as well.

Good job,I like the video,How much did you charge for it?
Howdy, I don't get into the cost for too many reasons to list here. 💃
"OK guys"!!
Thanks!! Patrick
HI Patrick Drury, thank you,
you may not have to lath the Floral designs you are referring to.
Send me a picture to kirk4stucco@gmail.com
I'll let you know the simplest way to cover those decorative area's.
Best wishes,
Kirk and family
Hey Patrick, I recieved the picture, easy solution.
If it were me after the pressure washing has dried, I would simply spread over the designs with a thick mud, just the top block and fill the holes on both sides, The next day skim coat as usual. If you apply the mesh it would have little benefit except save you 5 dollars in mud while spending 100 dollars in lath and 6 hours in time to attach the mesh to the blocks.
When I say stiff mud I mean it has to be thick enough to fill the holes without sliding or falling out.
Going to make a stucco dude out of you yet.
Best wishes,
kirk and family
Nice work! For the mix, I know u use 3 parts Portland cement and sand. Is that Riverside Cement or just Portland? Does it matter? Also what type of sand did u use? Regular washed sand or a finer sand for better smoothness?
Keep up the great work guys! Merry Christmas!
Good evening Dan Dude, Riverside is the name of a cement plaster, I usually buy whet sand my material yards has, which is Felton or Olimpia plaster sand, however, I have known to purchase any sand available, just not unwashed sand.

Iam interested in this stucco Stuff kirk can u trowl it to a smooth finish or is sanding required after it has set
Evening Sean Waaby, you can't sand stucco or cement!
Best you can do is what I am showing here, and remember cement plaster is 3/4' s sand, and you can troel down this application only so much.
No matter how professional you are!
Best wishes,
kirk and family
Hi kirk iam a plasterer from uk do u not use board finish plaster at all on interior plastering iis it just tapeing u do
Sean Waby, good question,
Thistle Board Finish is a gypsum finish plaster I would guess similar to Diamond veneer plaster made by British Gypsum, I have not seen this material here in the U.S.
I would imagine it's here someplace i just have not seen it, I have applied all types of exterior cement plasters to interiors, taping mds and compounds, structo-lite as well as most veneer plasters but I'm certain I haven't tried every product available.
Best wishes,
kirk and family

What about cement all rapid set? That’s a smooth finish.
Good evening Cristine darling far from it, "Rapid set stucco" has coarse sand in it.
Try "GreenCor USA cement plaster"; it has fine sand. Both are sold at Home depot. 😉

Question,if someone removes the paper backing from the drywall side,is there a way to weather proof without having to remove the stucco and start from scratch
He'll only answer a question if you say he' s great at his profession.
Good afternoon Marc, I have been asked this many times, there is no way to do this. Unfortunately, one has to go the long slow, difficult brought and remove the stucco and start from scratch, sorry.
You can paint with Sherwin Williams for at least 10 to 15 years protection form the rains if appropriately applied.

they showed the pressure wash a few videos back. the wall had moss all over it.
Hey Gee, yes, we pressure washed the heck out of this wall, In this video I say click here to see the prep work, but Jason just uploaded this video and has not yet had the time to add that feature to this video, However if you type in the words "DIY Pressure or power Washing Tips And Techniques" you will see the necessary prep work for this wall.

Nice job! What is the composition of the stucco you put on?
Good morning Rod Dude, I used portland cement mixed with sand.
I prefer 3 parts sand to 1 part cement plaster myself

I am a DIY homeowner and enjoy watching your videos. From what I understand, the premixed mortar bag that I buy from the big box store normally has the same 3 to 1 sand to cement ratio and some lime. How is the premixed mortar different from the premixed stucco from the big box store? Thanks.

Mastering Plastering for the beginner’s to the experts
Hey Kirk, I don't know if you've done this before (but probably has) - I have an interior wall that is really uneven, bumpy and has about 2 coats of oil based paint on it that was painted on using a brush which made it even more bumpy.
Best wishes,
kirk and family
StuccoPlastering Thanks Kirk, I'll definetely try that.
