I agree with the commenters that this is WAY too soon to be judging this, and also that saying Bonney can ‘turn into Nika’ is enormously overstating this.
Why should it not be judged at this point? The storytelling seems pretty clear, the symbolism has been set. There might be some restriction to how she can use the form, but her high significance in the story has been underlined that way. So I'd argue Mr Morj's criticism is on point - Bonney just hasn't had enough presence and character development in the story in relation to that new status.

Carrot was primed to become a Straw hat but she was abruptly crowned ruler of Zou. Yamato outright stated she'd join and Luffy invited them to, only to pull out at the last second. No new members will join the crew at this point in the story and if you think otherwise you should get a grip.

I don't think Bonney is going to be Luffy's protege. Why? The passing of the Straw Hat to the next generation symbolises the passing of the Will associated with it. Luffy is not going to pass the Straw Hat to Bonney. Because he has promised to pass it back to Shanks one day. Luffy is going to be the fated hero that Frees the world. Passing it to Bonney would be meaningless because the world will be made free BY Luffy. Luffy is the culmination of the collective Will of the world for its own Freedom. Giving the Straw Hat to Bonney would be a meaningless gesture at best, and a betrayal of Luffy's promise to Shanks at worst.

Morj mightve missed a bit on this one. Clearly she doesn't have the power of Nika, but it simply copying it. Copying something doesnt make the original less special. If Bonney never saw Luffy in that form, she'd never be able to achieve this.
"This happened too fast" Well...Egghead is the fifth longest arc in the entire series so I mean, the pacing with Bonney has been pretty consistent with the rest of the story I'd argue. Not only that, but Kuma has been around for hundreds of chapters and she's directly tied to him. Basically, we've spent plenty of time with Bonney by proxy and this arc gave us enough emotional connection to her specifically that it's pretty much fine.
lol, I said this on the chapter review, but if Bonney’s Nika transformation took even just one extra chapter to do, (from Luffy asking her to join the fight) then it could of felt more earned + build tension. The 1 page and few panels to become Nika felt a bit sudden, even if it’s logical thematically. But like others in the comments, I disagree on the argument that Bonney doesn’t have enough groundwork. I think the moment was just a paneling/pace issue. And it’s too soon to tell ofc.
The comparison to Momonosuke is interesting because, similar to Bonney, Momonosuke’s backstory is mostly told through Oden, just like how Bonney’s is told through Kuma’s.

Bonney has been such a good addition to the manga. The Kuma story has been her story all along, it was just leading to these reveals. They have been the emotional anchor in egghead, and if she does end up officially becoming a strawhat, it will have been absolutely earned through her actions on egghead and through Kuma’s actions on Sabaody. For her to be able to manifest as Nika, it shows the power of Luffy fulfilling dreams. Saying it was too fast and unearned is so pedantic…. Robin was a minor character with far less backstory reveals before she insinuated herself onto the crew. Point being that Oda doesn’t have to follow a recipe. One of the things that One Piece does so well is the world continuing to turn when the focus is on the strawhats. Like Kid being on Wano. He didn’t get there by accident- he got there because he was already aiming to take out a Yonko. Just like Bonney has been continuing her story / mission to find Kuma off camera.
I disagree. Bonnie was one of the main centerpieces around the entire egg head arc. The arc starts out with the introduction of Bonnie and then goes into her trying to kill Vega punk. Then the arc later on after CP9 comes shows Bonnie finding Kuma's memories and you start to see all the past of money. Then you flash Forward again and Bonnie's done with the memories and she's starting to fight everybody. Then you fast forward again and the Goreosei say start to tell some of Bonnie's history. Then you see Bonnie. Trying to be like Nico but she fails. Then later you see Luffy encourage her and his fruit has a special ability. It can affect the world around him and make it where any dreams are possible because it's the most ridiculous fruit. Think about that. Ridiculous. What's ridiculous the ability that you can do essentially anything as long as you can dream it. Why is that ridiculous because it's bigger than Bonnie's ability. But it's also similar to her ability. Both Luffy and Bonnie could actually grab futures if they want it to. In an essence luffy's fruit allows him to grab lightning. Why wouldn't he be able to grab an alternate future. Bonnie can do it so could Luffy.
This transformation is not just about Bonney and her arc. It's about Ginny and Kuma as well. All three of them worked and sacificed in order for this kid to be free. And we se the payoff here :)
I am wondering if Luffy's Gear 5th form just made it easier for everyone else to reach the same level. I remember reading about how in 100m dashes people thought no one could get a sub 10 second time because everyone who attempted always got close to 10 seconds but never past it. It was called the 10 second barrier. Then someone came along and broke that barrier and all of a sudden a lot of people were breaking that barrier. It seems like people were constrained by their own mind- it was impossible to get below 10 seconds in the 100m dash due to how many people failed until someone broke that barrier and "liberated" their minds from that constraint. I feel like Luffy's Gear 5 fills a similar role narrative wise as so many people before him failed to "liberate" themselves and the rest of the world. I think now that they see Luffy and realize it is possible to live that free other characters will have an easier time reaching that state. Luffy had no one to look to and had to forge a path to that state on his own when others thought it was impossible. Bonney saw that it was possible which "liberated" her mind from all the shackles it once had.

Law and Momo were just lucky enough to be the first major characters to be introduced in the New World and tag along with the crew. So Oda could take his time with them. I think this recent eye surgery really made him reevaluate some of his health along with the death of Toriyama. I think in an ideal situation if he had all the time in the world, he probably would’ve paced this out differently, but also Bonney wasn’t even one of his original characters. I think he’s much more of a gardener than an architect when it comes to writing.
Ha and literally the very next chapter we see she can’t hold the form at all the way luffy can, passed out after a single punch like most of her other distorted future forms that tend to be single attacks not transformations
How is Kuma's back story not Bonney's back story? She is 12, and we saw nearly the entirety of her life and origin in the back story. What else can be told? She spent most of her life stuck in a church because she couldn't go outside. The she left and became a pirate to find her dad. That's it. There is nothing else to say.

People are focusing too much in Bonney. This moment is for both Bonney and Kuma. The combination of what the two of them have experienced is what makes this moment special, I'm glad Kuma is still alive to see this. It even is a tribute to Luffy as the ultimate symbol of freedom in this world.

The video's made me understand the opposing side a little bit better, so now I _would_ like some more time to get to know Bonney when she's _not_ feral for revenge or running from the opps. Once that missing piece is filled, then I think the community might feel a little more at ease with a mini-Nika.

The argument regarding Kid was a stretch. I see no problem with his role in Wano. He was introduced early in the arc, had established beef with Kaido, and he was established as strong enough to accomplish what he went on to accomplish. There was nothing wrong with him being included in the final battle

Let’s make an entire video based on one panel while ignoring that Kuma’s backstory is also Bonney’s. Bonney SAW those memories. It’s not just something for us readers. It’s not that complicated.
I think on re-read, with everything we know of Bonney now, we can track and follow her story comprehensively. From 37 years of Kuma to the 1 chapter with Bonney setting out to sea, we got her origin story. The actual journey from her leaving Sorbet to Sabaody amounts to "can i find my dad here? No? Onto the next one. Take the food while you're at it." There's nothing else to it. Every island she visits until Sabaody would've been the same because we know what her goal is and it isn't adventure like Luffy so That leaves Oda free to cut out the entire journey because there's little variance to "is my dad here" Oda could've done to express the adventure she had until he run in with Zoro and the CD. She wasn't ever going to find him til Egghead. That meeting, btw, was the first wrench in her plans and the spark that set her on course to where we are now in Egghead, if retroactively. Even if Oda didn't plan on Bonney joining the Straw Hats initially you could see where his creative thinking was afterward with the times we saw Bonney. With Blackbeard and splitting in his face, to Sakazuki and his comments, her solo mission in Marijois and running into Sabo. We didn't need to know the ins and outs of her actual journey up until she ran into the Straw Hats proper right outside Egghead, only that it was headed _somewhere._ i don't think even Oda had a full idea until he started writing Egghead, but he laid a creative seed with Bonney and Zoro's interaction at Sabaody that put into the back-burner until it was really time. In a way, she got the character treatment of Law and Momo with the screentime treatment of Kidd, where she got the hardest hitting backstory in One Piece: Kuma's, as *HER* origin story. And the culmination of both characters, Bonney and Kuma, lies in this moment where she turns herself into the very thing BOTH of them admire. But where this is the final moments of life for Kuma, this is the start to a new chapter in Bonney's, both being freed from their proverbial prisons by their idol and hero, Nika. The last instance before total freedom simply being an encouragement of affirmation from that very same hero against the last ounce of doubt Bonney had. To which the thought process subtly amounted to w/o explicit words, "if my hero says i can then dammit i can" and she did. Her faith and will never truly wavered. Only in the face of certain death (clutched by Saturn) did she start losing hope, only for that faith to be rewarded two-fold by Kuma showing up and Luffy going G5 right in front of her and assuming the pose. This Nika moment for Bonney is Bonney's "I want to Live", or "Help Me" or "Thank you Zeff" or seeing the Cherry Blossoms or Sharing Blood that every other Straw Hat has gotten at some point in their development into straw Hats. The difference is the surrounding context of the moment, being the most significant for the world compared to every other SH. IF ANYTHING: I wish she had more moments with the Straw Hats in Egghead but i think she's doing well in that department already it's that her "Straw Hat moment" came before and more heavy-handed than the SH camaraderie could be established completely. That said, it's enough, esp with everything else we've seen of her put together. So at the very least, I'm hyped and very glad this happened. I can only hope that others eventually come around, and that my words help.

People need to calm down. She still does not have advanced conqueror's haki (devil fruit can't make you have more haki) so it's not like Bonney can 1v1 Kaido now. Her fruit for the most part is physical alteration (it has been clear that devil fruits and haki are completely separate things), it does not affect her "spirit". On top of that, she can probably stay in that form for less than 30 seconds.
I sort of disagree with this analysis because I think Bonney is carrying on Kuma's will, which kind of gives her a pass on the development time requirement. If Oda wrote the story differently where, instead of dying, Kuma became a significant character in the story that was critical to the final conflict, readers wouldn't bat an eye because we got all of the development time with Kuma. Kuma has been an integral part of the story (and to the strawhats especially) since Thriller Bark, from nothing happened to Shabondy to everything he did up until now. Yeah, we don't have much time with Bonney yet, but she's a 10 year old kid who was stuck inside most of her life; up until now, her dad has really been the focus and he's just a more compelling, complex character. It would be cool if we got more time with Bonney, but I feel that because Kuma was such an integral part of the story, and so critical to the strawhats' development specifically, it fits naturally that his daughter, who's carrying on Kuma's will, is joining the strawhats. So to me it feels WAY more natural than the Kid b.s. where he was shoehorned into a major role in Wano. I agree it would have been great if we got more focus on Bonney herself, but I think we should count Kuma's development as part of Bonney's development time, since she's his daughter and is getting the torch passed onto her. He helped the strawhats in immeasurable ways, so it's time for the strawhats to take Bonney in to return the favor. We've also had some foreshadowing of her importance throughout the story, so in my view between that and Kuma, it's okay for her to have this significant role in my book.
For me .. Bonney and Kuma are one seed for Bonney's bloom as Nika So I feel like the build up for Nika-Bonney is done by both Bonney and Kuma over the years of one piece so for me Bonney's highlight and being front and center is more deserved than Law in Onigashima 😅
i really dont get how people are confused by this.. SHE. IS. NOT. NIKA. Time and time again we see that her ability is to MIMIC other abilities. Never once has she been shown to copy another another fruits abilities in entirety, all of her buffs have been physical. On the Kidd point, it was weird he just switched all his revenge drive from Kaido to Big Mom. One moment he is the one who is gonna take Kaido's head, the next he is gonna prevent Big Mom from reaching the roof again. It was the switch-up that hurt the moment the most, there was no reason for that imo. That being said, how much flashback can there be for a 12 yo? Kuma's backstory counts as Bonny's for me, they share most of the trauma (especially when she saw his memories).
I think it honestly makes sense that Bonney is moving so fast makes a lot of sense and isn’t as bad as people think it is. While she doesn’t have a super long backstory, she’s 12, so she really can’t have too intricate of a backstory because she is so young. If you think about her backstory with Kuma, it’s much more fleshed out than Luffy’s pre-timeskip backstory and about comparable in terms of impact when you add the Ace and Sabo bits. Her backstory mimics Momo’s in a lot of ways, where instead of Momo being the focus Oden was, and Momo has to carry on his legacy while not carrying the brunt of the narrative load from a backstory perspective. Also her reaching gear 5th is not just a culmination of her story up to this point, it’s a culmination of *Kuma’s* story, who worked so hard for so long precisely so that she could have this type of unlimited freedom that was denied to him. Kuma has been set up forever, and Bonney being able to channel Nika is the culmination of all his hard work, all her struggles through her life, and importantly, her new relationship with Luffy. Without Luffy’s example, it would be absolutely impossible for her to do this, and I think this is an underrated part of this whole thing. Luffy had to achieve gear 5th fully blind, with no template to go off of, not even the stories of Nika that Bonney grew up on. By that regard it makes sense that it was far harder to achieve the form for him, as he was forging a path with absolutely no example to go off of. Bonney is able to effectively copy luffy’s form, which makes things far easier for her. Not to mention that Bonney, to my knowledge, has never been seen using Haki, and certainly doesn’t have conqueror’s coating, which makes it near impossible for her to be as effective in combat as Luffy is
People were literally dead certain in Yamato joining the crew despite Wano giving her way less character stuff than Bonney has in this arc. I think this is a case of the fan base just being impossible to please
Oda did it to himself he kept dragging it too long and people’s expectations are really high now. It’s almost certain that the One Piece treasure will be underwhelming and I hope I’m wrong.

I like Bonney, especially as a Strawhat, the problem is the whole Nika thing, not only her turning into Nika but Nika in general. I think the idea of Nika ruined One Piece in the same way Naruto was ruined by the whole reincarnation thing. A story that started simple ended up being one about a Messiah figure and everything happening around them. This is a bit too much for me personally.

I get wanting to provide a critique but... it's ODA. Morj's dialogue almost comes off as though he thinks he could write a better story. I think this may feel a bit rushed because Oda has said he is trying to pick up the pace to get one piece to the ending that he wants to give it before his health gives out. As someone who wasn't that big of a fan of gear 5th to begin with, I'm fine with it. I'm more interested to see where the overall plot goes from here.

we haven't seen what bonney can do yet so everyone is just overeacting. let oda cook. as for the video, while i understand your argument, even if the focus of the backstory was primarily on kuma's past, we have to remember that this isn't just us watching those events unfold, but bonney too. so while she's not the main focus of the events being told, she's present throughout the whole thing. that has impact on her as a character and her development. that's still all part of building her up and giving her character more meaning. sure, giving people more time would help people from overeacting but the story is already there.
Momo was 8 now 28 lost his "kid" privilege's with Robin and Nami, still has a lot of mental maturing to achieve and experiences to live. Granted he has had to grow up a lot in a short period due to Kaido invading Wano, knowing both his parents were dead sisters status unknown
One panel and people have drawn pitch forks and come to so many conclusions for some reason. I think we just wait and see, Bonney has not been able to replicate any parmetia like abilities yet so odds are shell just have a slightly stretchier body and slightly be able to effect other people body (not to Luffys extent) but she probably won't be able to affect landscape at all with it. There's also a chance this will have severe repercussions for her or just turn out not to be what people thought 100% so there's still a lot of room for growth with her, or maybe acceptance too (hard to explain what I mean with that one)

Everyone seems to be forgetting a concept. Luffy's fruit power makes the world around him and the people around him different in altars them to what their dreams are. So if Bonnie's dream is to be like Nika and Luffy looks like Nika and her eyes and he walks up to her and tells her Bonnie you can achieve your dream also I believe in you. This is the essence of luffy's fruit in action. His fruit brought her to her dream and that's why the straw hat pirates are the way they are as a crew and are one of the wackiest crews and the smallest crew. If you notice, no other crew including shank's crew has as little of members as the straw hats do that actually are this successful?. Luffy's fruit guides the way for them to do that. It has an innate ability that allows others around him to all to be free and their dreams are their ability to reach their freedoms

The analysis of Kid here is woefully incorrect. Oda updates us on Kid in literally every single arc of the Emperor Saga, and several of those updates(sinking Big Mom’s ships in FMI, forming the alliance to target Shanks and being confronted by Kaido in Dressrosa, being imprisoned by Kaido in Zou) are all directly related to the Emperors. The only one that wasn’t direct was still connected to the Emperors with him watching Caesar’s stream in Punk Hazard.

One piece is close (relatively)to ending, we don’t have time, nor do readers actually want, 2 3 4 arcs of Bonnie development. She’s always been written as a special supernova, and egg head perfectly explained why with one of the best back stories in One Piece. Egg head is Bonnie’s arc, how much more could we want before we are just complaining about too much Bonnie panel time? Do we really want elbaf and future arcs partially or wholly dedicated to Bonnie development right after egghead? Absolutely not. It’s end game. There might be some restriction to how she can use the form, but her high significance in the story has been underlined that way.

Well...Egghead is the fifth longest arc in the entire series so I mean, the pacing with Bonney has been pretty consistent with the rest of the story I'd argue.
Not only that, but Kuma has been around for hundreds of chapters and she's directly tied to him.
Basically, we've spent plenty of time with Bonney by proxy and this arc gave us enough emotional connection to her specifically that it's pretty much fine.
lol, I said this on the chapter review, but if Bonney’s Nika transformation took even just one extra chapter to do, (from Luffy asking her to join the fight) then it could of felt more earned + build tension. The 1 page and few panels to become Nika felt a bit sudden, even if it’s logical thematically.
But like others in the comments, I disagree on the argument that Bonney doesn’t have enough groundwork. I think the moment was just a paneling/pace issue. And it’s too soon to tell ofc.
The comparison to Momonosuke is interesting because, similar to Bonney, Momonosuke’s backstory is mostly told through Oden, just like how Bonney’s is told through Kuma’s.
He traveled with the crew from Punk Hazard till Wano. That was like literally half of One Piece dude💀
And he was around for over 3 arcs to give the reader plenty of time to get to know him.

Bonney has been such a good addition to the manga. The Kuma story has been her story all along, it was just leading to these reveals. They have been the emotional anchor in egghead, and if she does end up officially becoming a strawhat, it will have been absolutely earned through her actions on egghead and through Kuma’s actions on Sabaody. For her to be able to manifest as Nika, it shows the power of Luffy fulfilling dreams. Saying it was too fast and unearned is so pedantic….
Robin was a minor character with far less backstory reveals before she insinuated herself onto the crew. Point being that Oda doesn’t have to follow a recipe.
One of the things that One Piece does so well is the world continuing to turn when the focus is on the strawhats. Like Kid being on Wano. He didn’t get there by accident- he got there because he was already aiming to take out a Yonko. Just like Bonney has been continuing her story / mission to find Kuma off camera.

I disagree. Bonnie was one of the main centerpieces around the entire egg head arc.
The arc starts out with the introduction of Bonnie and then goes into her trying to kill Vega punk. Then the arc later on after CP9 comes shows Bonnie finding Kuma's memories and you start to see all the past of money.
Then you flash Forward again and Bonnie's done with the memories and she's starting to fight everybody.
Then you fast forward again and the Goreosei say start to tell some of Bonnie's history.
Then you see Bonnie. Trying to be like Nico but she fails. Then later you see Luffy encourage her and his fruit has a special ability. It can affect the world around him and make it where any dreams are possible because it's the most ridiculous fruit. Think about that. Ridiculous. What's ridiculous the ability that you can do essentially anything as long as you can dream it.
Why is that ridiculous because it's bigger than Bonnie's ability. But it's also similar to her ability. Both Luffy and Bonnie could actually grab futures if they want it to. In an essence luffy's fruit allows him to grab lightning. Why wouldn't he be able to grab an alternate future. Bonnie can do it so could Luffy.
This transformation is not just about Bonney and her arc. It's about Ginny and Kuma as well. All three of them worked and sacificed in order for this kid to be free. And we se the payoff here :)
I am wondering if Luffy's Gear 5th form just made it easier for everyone else to reach the same level. I remember reading about how in 100m dashes people thought no one could get a sub 10 second time because everyone who attempted always got close to 10 seconds but never past it. It was called the 10 second barrier. Then someone came along and broke that barrier and all of a sudden a lot of people were breaking that barrier.
It seems like people were constrained by their own mind- it was impossible to get below 10 seconds in the 100m dash due to how many people failed until someone broke that barrier and "liberated" their minds from that constraint. I feel like Luffy's Gear 5 fills a similar role narrative wise as so many people before him failed to "liberate" themselves and the rest of the world. I think now that they see Luffy and realize it is possible to live that free other characters will have an easier time reaching that state. Luffy had no one to look to and had to forge a path to that state on his own when others thought it was impossible. Bonney saw that it was possible which "liberated" her mind from all the shackles it once had.

I think this recent eye surgery really made him reevaluate some of his health along with the death of Toriyama. I think in an ideal situation if he had all the time in the world, he probably would’ve paced this out differently, but also Bonney wasn’t even one of his original characters. I think he’s much more of a gardener than an architect when it comes to writing.

How is Kuma's back story not Bonney's back story? She is 12, and we saw nearly the entirety of her life and origin in the back story. What else can be told? She spent most of her life stuck in a church because she couldn't go outside. The she left and became a pirate to find her dad. That's it. There is nothing else to say.

The argument regarding Kid was a stretch. I see no problem with his role in Wano. He was introduced early in the arc, had established beef with Kaido, and he was established as strong enough to accomplish what he went on to accomplish. Let’s make an entire video based on one panel while ignoring that Kuma’s backstory is also Bonney’s. Bonney SAW those memories. It’s not just something for us readers. It’s not that complicated.
I think on re-read, with everything we know of Bonney now, we can track and follow her story comprehensively.
From 37 years of Kuma to the 1 chapter with Bonney setting out to sea, we got her origin story. The actual journey from her leaving Sorbet to Sabaody amounts to "can i find my dad here? No? Onto the next one. Take the food while you're at it."
There's nothing else to it. Every island she visits until Sabaody would've been the same because we know what her goal is and it isn't adventure like Luffy so That leaves Oda free to cut out the entire journey because there's little variance to "is my dad here" Oda could've done to express the adventure she had until he run in with Zoro and the CD. She wasn't ever going to find him til Egghead.
That meeting, btw, was the first wrench in her plans and the spark that set her on course to where we are now in Egghead, if retroactively. Even if Oda didn't plan on Bonney joining the Straw Hats initially you could see where his creative thinking was afterward with the times we saw Bonney. With Blackbeard and splitting in his face, to Sakazuki and his comments, her solo mission in Marijois and running into Sabo. We didn't need to know the ins and outs of her actual journey up until she ran into the Straw Hats proper right outside Egghead, only that it was headed _somewhere._ i don't think even Oda had a full idea until he started writing Egghead, but he laid a creative seed with Bonney and Zoro's interaction at Sabaody that put into the back-burner until it was really time.
In a way, she got the character treatment of Law and Momo with the screentime treatment of Kidd, where she got the hardest hitting backstory in One Piece: Kuma's, as *HER* origin story. And the culmination of both characters, Bonney and Kuma, lies in this moment where she turns herself into the very thing BOTH of them admire.
But where this is the final moments of life for Kuma, this is the start to a new chapter in Bonney's, both being freed from their proverbial prisons by their idol and hero, Nika. The last instance before total freedom simply being an encouragement of affirmation from that very same hero against the last ounce of doubt Bonney had. To which the thought process subtly amounted to w/o explicit words, "if my hero says i can then dammit i can" and she did.
Her faith and will never truly wavered. Only in the face of certain death (clutched by Saturn) did she start losing hope, only for that faith to be rewarded two-fold by Kuma showing up and Luffy going G5 right in front of her and assuming the pose.
This Nika moment for Bonney is Bonney's "I want to Live", or "Help Me" or "Thank you Zeff" or seeing the Cherry Blossoms or Sharing Blood that every other Straw Hat has gotten at some point in their development into straw Hats.
The difference is the surrounding context of the moment, being the most significant for the world compared to every other SH.
IF ANYTHING: I wish she had more moments with the Straw Hats in Egghead but i think she's doing well in that department already it's that her "Straw Hat moment" came before and more heavy-handed than the SH camaraderie could be established completely.
That said, it's enough, esp with everything else we've seen of her put together. So at the very least, I'm hyped and very glad this happened. I can only hope that others eventually come around, and that my words help.

People need to calm down. She still does not have advanced conqueror's haki (devil fruit can't make you have more haki) so it's not like Bonney can 1v1 Kaido now. Her fruit for the most part is physical alteration (it has been clear that devil fruits and haki are completely separate things), it does not affect her "spirit". On top of that, she can probably stay in that form for less than 30 seconds.
I sort of disagree with this analysis because I think Bonney is carrying on Kuma's will, which kind of gives her a pass on the development time requirement. If Oda wrote the story differently where, instead of dying, Kuma became a significant character in the story that was critical to the final conflict, readers wouldn't bat an eye because we got all of the development time with Kuma. Kuma has been an integral part of the story (and to the strawhats especially) since Thriller Bark, from nothing happened to Shabondy to everything he did up until now. Yeah, we don't have much time with Bonney yet, but she's a 10 year old kid who was stuck inside most of her life; up until now, her dad has really been the focus and he's just a more compelling, complex character. It would be cool if we got more time with Bonney, but I feel that because Kuma was such an integral part of the story, and so critical to the strawhats' development specifically, it fits naturally that his daughter, who's carrying on Kuma's will, is joining the strawhats. So to me it feels WAY more natural than the Kid b.s. where he was shoehorned into a major role in Wano.
I agree it would have been great if we got more focus on Bonney herself, but I think we should count Kuma's development as part of Bonney's development time, since she's his daughter and is getting the torch passed onto her. He helped the strawhats in immeasurable ways, so it's time for the strawhats to take Bonney in to return the favor. We've also had some foreshadowing of her importance throughout the story, so in my view between that and Kuma, it's okay for her to have this significant role in my book.
For me .. Bonney and Kuma are one seed for Bonney's bloom as Nika
So I feel like the build up for Nika-Bonney is done by both Bonney and Kuma over the years of one piece so for me Bonney's highlight and being front and center is more deserved than Law in Onigashima 😅

One moment he is the one who is gonna take Kaido's head, the next he is gonna prevent Big Mom from reaching the roof again.
It was the switch-up that hurt the moment the most, there was no reason for that imo.
That being said, how much flashback can there be for a 12 yo? Kuma's backstory counts as Bonny's for me, they share most of the trauma (especially when she saw his memories).

I think it honestly makes sense that Bonney is moving so fast makes a lot of sense and isn’t as bad as people think it is. While she doesn’t have a super long backstory, she’s 12, so she really can’t have too intricate of a backstory because she is so young. If you think about her backstory with Kuma, it’s much more fleshed out than Luffy’s pre-timeskip backstory and about comparable in terms of impact when you add the Ace and Sabo bits. Her backstory mimics Momo’s in a lot of ways, where instead of Momo being the focus Oden was, and Momo has to carry on his legacy while not carrying the brunt of the narrative load from a backstory perspective.
Also her reaching gear 5th is not just a culmination of her story up to this point, it’s a culmination of *Kuma’s* story, who worked so hard for so long precisely so that she could have this type of unlimited freedom that was denied to him. Kuma has been set up forever, and Bonney being able to channel Nika is the culmination of all his hard work, all her struggles through her life, and importantly, her new relationship with Luffy.
Without Luffy’s example, it would be absolutely impossible for her to do this, and I think this is an underrated part of this whole thing. Luffy had to achieve gear 5th fully blind, with no template to go off of, not even the stories of Nika that Bonney grew up on. By that regard it makes sense that it was far harder to achieve the form for him, as he was forging a path with absolutely no example to go off of. Bonney is able to effectively copy luffy’s form, which makes things far easier for her. Not to mention that Bonney, to my knowledge, has never been seen using Haki, and certainly doesn’t have conqueror’s coating, which makes it near impossible for her to be as effective in combat as Luffy is

I get wanting to provide a critique but... it's ODA. Morj's dialogue almost comes off as though he thinks he could write a better story. I think this may feel a bit rushed because Oda has said he is trying to pick up the pace to get one piece to the ending that he wants to give it before his health gives out. As someone who wasn't that big of a fan of gear 5th to begin with, I'm fine with it. I'm more interested to see where the overall plot goes from here.

we haven't seen what bonney can do yet so everyone is just overeacting. let oda cook. as for the video, while i understand your argument, even if the focus of the backstory was primarily on kuma's past, we have to remember that this isn't just us watching those events unfold, but bonney too. so while she's not the main focus of the events being told, she's present throughout the whole thing. that has impact on her as a character and her development. that's still all part of building her up and giving her character more meaning. sure, giving people more time would help people from overeacting but the story is already there.
All that is nice to have if you completely ignore that Bonney is 12 years old and most of her story is to be developed from now on.

One panel and people have drawn pitch forks and come to so many conclusions for some reason. I think we just wait and see, Bonney has not been able to replicate any parmetia like abilities yet so odds are shell just have a slightly stretchier body and slightly be able to effect other people body (not to Luffys extent) but she probably won't be able to affect landscape at all with it. There's also a chance this will have severe repercussions for her or just turn out not to be what people thought 100% so there's still a lot of room for growth with her, or maybe acceptance too (hard to explain what I mean with that one)

Everyone seems to be forgetting a concept. Luffy's fruit power makes the world around him and the people around him different in altars them to what their dreams are.
So if Bonnie's dream is to be like Nika and Luffy looks like Nika and her eyes and he walks up to her and tells her Bonnie you can achieve your dream also I believe in you.
This is the essence of luffy's fruit in action. His fruit brought her to her dream and that's why the straw hat pirates are the way they are as a crew and are one of the wackiest crews and the smallest crew.

Oda updates us on Kid in literally every single arc of the Emperor Saga, and several of those updates(sinking Big Mom’s ships in FMI, forming the alliance to target Shanks and being confronted by Kaido in Dressrosa, being imprisoned by Kaido in Zou) are all directly related to the Emperors. The only one that wasn’t direct was still connected to the Emperors with him watching Caesar’s stream in Punk Hazard.

brook wasn't even as relevant in thriller bark as bonney is in egghead right now and with her backstory and the last chapter i dont see a problem in her joining the crew
One piece is close (relatively)to ending, we don’t have time, nor do readers actually want, 2 3 4 arcs of Bonnie development. She’s always been written as a special supernova, and egg head perfectly explained why with one of the best back stories in One Piece. Egg head is Bonnie’s arc, how much more could we want before we are just complaining about too much Bonnie panel time? Do we really want elbaf and future arcs partially or wholly dedicated to Bonnie development right after egghead? Absolutely not. It’s end game. Nothing’s wrong w her doing this now, and anyone keeping up with the story expected it to happen anyway. This whole “problem” is weird to me
I'm so flabbergasted by the people mad about this. I had been expecting her to try Nika mode for awhile now. And this was a nice surprising moment that was satisfying to watch. All of Kumas sacrificing bore it's fruit in front of him, at that moment.
@@spunkushand Bonnie has to suffer all the mental anguish of every one of his memories like they were her own. Bonnie very personally knows how it’s like to have her freedom deprived in multiple different ways and knows a tremendous amount for just a girl to know.
She is one of the few kids in OP I expected to get an immediate jump in power. Especially since her whole gimmick is possible futures, and she just wanted the one with the most freedom
I think the reason why kid was used is because Law wasn't strong enough on his own to take out Big Mam, and the only other character with any chance of helping take her out was kidd

Ruined? No. Forever changed on a fondumental level? Absolutely. Despite being the topic of debate for days no one still understands how big of a twist this is for the story. Bonney has become the second most important character in the story and with a huge margin. She is almost a co protagonist now
