    Hi all, I'm happy to be back (though I never really left :)). I have a number of videos and online lessons similar to this planned, also the continuation of my old series (and some other stuff). Creating videos like this is 'expensive'; takes me lots of hours of work (Learn Longsword or Learn Rapier videos can take up to 36 hours of clean time to finish, video like this is usually a working day + preparation), there's gear and other stuff (and not to forget the practical experience needed). If you like my videos and if they are helpful to you, please consider contributing at www.buymeacoffee.com/martinfabian. I plan to update this page with subscription and premium perks as time goes.
    Thank you for being awesome and see you soon with a lesson on "breaking the Ochs".
    Cheers.

    My favourite sequence is kurtzhau -> shoving away opponent's sword by un-crossing the arms -> cut to the neck a wide step to the left or a duplieren on the outside if shoving away the sword failed. But the options with the thrusts you demonstrate are way more simple and efficient. I'll try these as well; I've adapted my sequence from messer and I've never actually studied longsword-specific descriptions of kurtzhau. ;D

    Hmmm very interesting concept. I'll probably stay away from it for now, because I can see a lot of potential doubles, as long as I am a beginner sparring with mostly other beginners

    Martin, do you believe that mentioned in kurtzhaw glossa durchwechseln this time doesn't mean disengage, but simply appearing under enemy sword or this auswinden thrust? How does this interpretation fit with kurtzhaw as counter to ochs? This is really mind buggling, countering ochs with kurtzhaw still seems like overkill to me (example - short kurzhaw places me already behind enemy ochs, why should I disengage which source ask me to do? But then, If I can thrust under enemy ochs with such simple motion, why coming vom tag anyway?).

    • @MartinFabian
      @MartinFabian  9 місяців тому +3

      This is for a longer discussion and my next 'short lesson' video will be about the breaking of ochs, including the kurzhaw:
      -it fits 100%, there are 4 images of a 'kurtzhau' (if we count Talhoffer but we should), see my intro
      -it is not an overkill actually, in order to understand why you have to understand all the other 'breakings' of ochs and their pros and cons
      -there are the following ways of disengaging (zucken aside) 1) long into long 2) long into short. You can do the long into short in 2 ways, kurtzhau is the second one
      -have a look at goliath breaking of duplieren in the zwerchhau section, there's a pic of a similar ending position
      -just for illustration ua-cam.com/video/j1wVdw0tz90/v-deo.html
      I don't think this should be a primary way of countering ochs or reacting to cuts, it's just a peculiar technique which might sometimes be a better choice if the conditions are correct. But that applies for many other complex techniques.

      On a more serious note, you seem to be using the kurtzhaw here more so as a preparation rather than as a response to an already existing cut like ringeck and danzig say, have you done any experimentation with using it in that way?

    • @MartinFabian
      @MartinFabian  9 місяців тому +1

      @@blarpus this is just a demo how it works, you can use it in variety of situations. the difference between preparation and response in the eyes of a fencer is very different than that of spectators. hence my other dilemma I once described on my FB HEMA page about the difference between ansetzen and absetzen. at a certain point and speed it becomes one 'setzen'.
      If I recall correctly Meyer describes this in the "third book on longsword fencing" (the one with the poem in the beginning) as "opponent lifts sword, you cross the sword" and that is also a variety of times and situations.

    Hello Martin, im an old HEMA dinosaur living in New Zealand. In the spirit of friendly conversation and the search for longsword truths that i write this. The kurtzhau hits with the short edge while simultaneously parrying with the long as can be seen in meyers image B top left. Your intrpretation is on the right track but it is an adaptation to modern sport practices which seek to turn the usage of these old swords of war into a quasi modern olympic fencing style which wants to do everything as fast as it possibly can. The kurtzhau is done from above, not starting with the hands held low which is a vom tag Meyer never uses, and needs the full range of motion of the arms and joints to complete as meyer both shows and describes. What the germas were doing and what hema is currently doing bare no relation to each other and everything HEMA is therefore a interpretation and then a adaptation to conform to current misunderstandings.
    Please feel free to disagree with me.

      @@tonyrenshaw8328 hello Tony, thanks for the reply and cheers from NZ, I'm currently here 🙃 No problem at all, you're perfectly fine to interpret it as it works for you. But if you have something which is working and fits the text more, feel free to share a video, I'm pretty sure everyone will be excited to learn. Cheers
