Being Asian made me scream “20” the second the that triangle picture came lol. The pythagoras theorem derives from mostly from the number 3, 4, and 5. I kinda did memorize hundreds of possibility when I was in middle school. 3=12 4=16 so 5 must be 20.

Same, I wanted to tell them that they're doing the hardest way.

farhan rafi yessss. I just looked at it and thought of the Pythagorean triples?
so my discovery was not wrong, my math teacher wanted the work not the answer
For the record, the right triangle in the geometry problem is a 3-4-5 Pythagorean triple (multiplied by four), so I was able to get 20 in a few seconds (the missing side was 5, so multiply that by 4)
Dude same 😂
Exactly. It's a basic 3-4-5 triad, memorizing the triples makes doing these much faster

Joe D. Nguyen it’s not hard like I don’t understand y they used a multiplication sign when everyone knows parentheses means multiplication🤦♂️
For the second math problem you can use a shortcut. When dealing with right triangles there are a few quick ways to find the hypotenuse, and for this one it's a 3 4 5 triangle.
The two legs have a common denominator (in this case 4) and, when the legs are divided by that number, you get 3 and 4. When this is true for a right triangle you can multiple that common denominator by 5 to get the hypotenuse.
12÷4=3
16÷4=4
20÷4=5 or 4×5=20
There's a proof for this but I'm not typing that out lol
Mikaela’s folding technique is so satisfying
I really like tom's description of school. Not bad for a guy who i never knew dropped out of college two times yet he is one of the coolest individuals i know.

Okay Stannis ;)
For those not familiar with Pythagoras, there is a simple trick to remember. A triangle having sides of length 3, 4 and 5 is a right triangle. Anything with the same proportion will be a right triangle as well. In this case : 12 (3*4), 16(4*4) and the missing number will be 20 (5*4) :)
so the kids on college kids react don’t actually go to college
"I dont do well under pressure",
"Y E A H, I N 25 S E CON D".
There it goes,my anxiety 😌
The triangle was also a 3-4-5 triangle. If they realized that the 3 and 4 side were multiplied by 4 they could have just multiplied the 5 side by 4 to get their answer of 20.
I'm impressed I retained that since the last time I had a real math class was 9-10 years ago.
Bryan Cucinotta I was thinking the same thing!
Their is technically correct for the dog question. Their is both a plural and singular possessive. Its is more acceptable since we tend to see animals as objects rather than people.
weepingwillowmc or, you know...be more civilized and say ‘his’ or ‘her’
Nathan Key well in theory, but you don’t actually know if the dog is a he or a she. So their is correct.
Actually, no, their is incorrect. That would only be correct if it was plural, like if it said dogs. It would have to be either he or she and if you don't know the gender of the dog then its is correct.
( I have a degree in English and work as an editor so I deal with this kind of stuff every day)
@@armadillobits620 Actually, it would be "its" because you don't know its sex, and the word "dog" is singular. The word "their" is plural.
Anthony Pappas their can be used in the singular too. You wouldn’t call an unknown person “it”, you’d say “they”
“Oh no, that person lost their ball! We should return it to them”
I have a whole new appreciation for Eric knowing he has a quote from the outsiders on his arm
Umm actually their can be used in a singular tense. For example "Someone left their phone here" their is not exclusively plural. So the sentence "The brown dog loves their bone" is correct.
Though technically (not really, I just don't want to upset anyone ;-;) it doesn't make grammatical sense....
But my reasoning is that it doesn't flow off the tongue as easily if you use 'their' instead of 'its'.
@@emilyhudson1826 Grammar is not decided by how well something flows lol. Their refers to the belonging of a living thing. Its is a general term to an aforementioned thing. BOTH work perfectly. Their however is the better usage. If anything "its" flows a lot worse.
I'm no English expert, but you use "their" for singular when you don't know the gender of the person. Otherwise you would use his/hers. Here we are talking about a dog, and they are usually addressed as "it", not him or her. So that's why they consider "its" as the correct answer. But again, I'm not a native English speaker and I learned the language from movies and games, not by learning the actual grammar
I believe the reason why it's "its" and not "their" for the dog sentence is because animals are referred to as "it". The exception to that is if the animal has some type of personal relationship with people (examples: pets and characters in books/films/etc where people get to know the animal).
Umm...its 'the dog...'. Didn't 'the' in the beginning pretty much nullifies the use of 'their' in the sentence.
Anybody else just saw that it was a 3,4,5 triangle
tbh, took me longer than I would like to admit to notice :/ my skills have gotten weaker
I did; made solving that one super fast
Nope. But I _was_ helped by being a Computer Scientist, and being able to do *16 x 16 = 256* in about 5 seconds.
Then writing

underneath one another made finding 400 easy, and using the usual square root finder when you have a perfect square followed by an even number of 0s, got me 20 in under half the allotted time.
Not as quick as the 3-4-5 method, admittedly, but still quite quick.

Nobody:
Mikaela doing math: ThaT’s nOt RIghT😂
I just stared at the triangle problem and I knew the answer already since there is a proportion of both legs and hypotenuse which is 3:4:5 where 3 and 4 are both legs and 5 is the hypotenuse. Always remember that those numbers are all divisible by a certain number like 12:16:20 are also 3:4:5 only divisible by 4. :)
Bruh🤔🤔😑😑😅😅
4:44 Tom is a mood
The Pythagoras problem with 12 and 16 get the third side is easy when you remember that if a right angle triangle has 3 and 4 for its shorter sides you get 5 as the long side. 12 and 16 are the same as 3 and 4, just scaled up by 4, apply that to 5 you get 20. Don't have to work hard, work smart
Pythagorean Triples, SON
Everything you just said was even more confusing than what they did and I couldn't even follow that.
Exactly what I wanted to say
Dan Luedke in a triangle that has sides 3, 4 and 5 and the sides with lengths 3 and 4 are connected at 90 degrees, you square all of them, 3x3=9, 4x4=16, 5x5=25 then add 9 and 16 which gives you 25. That matches the square of 5. So longest side when squared matches the shorter sides squared and added together. In the video, they have 12 and 16. These are just 3x4 and 4x4 so if you think of it that way, you have 5x4 giving you 20
You can just divide both 12 and 16 by 4 (multiply this number to the solution later) . Then, you'd have 4 and 3 as the sides. Triplets of right triangle here will be 3,4,5..so the hypotenuse is 5 multiplied by 4 = 20
Hi math boy
Oh. cool I would've never thought to do that.
A=12, B=16
Notice they're both divisible by 4.
A=3, B= 4
Now it can be recognised as a 3-4-5 right triangle. C=5. (5*4)=20
If you didn't know that,
(3^2)+(4^2)=(C^2)
9+16=25
√25=5
Then multiply by 4 to get original values.
((3*4)^2)+((4*4)^2)=((5*4)^2)
(12^2)+(16^2)=(20^2)
@pardn | For the longest time, I never truly understood the concept of a 3-4-5 right triangle. I do very well with math but I never knew what was so special about a 3-4-5 right* triangle. Thank you for explaining that! 😊
“I can English “😂😂

for the geometry one, a right triangle can have the length of three sides with the ratio of 3:4:5 = 12:16:20 and there u go
Ok I'm glad I wasn't the only one who solved it like that.

The second math question is a pythagorean triple. 3,4,5. Divide a and b by 4 and you get 3 and 4. 5 is always the hypotenuse so multiply 5 by 4 and get 20. Once you know the concept do it in 5 seconds
Yeah, but if you haven't done geometry in 10 years you tend to forget about things like principles of similarity - especially when you're under a time crunch.
@Spellcaster86 It certainly does help the brain, but "use it or lose it" is a pretty valid saying and people use different skillsets in daily routines, nor should they be judged for how they spend their leisure time. In addition, geometry is kinda in its own little world even where math is concerned.

Ok but, 'the dog loves their bone' IS gramatically correct b/c 'their' is both used as both plural and single possessive depending on the context.
Also like, if I'm talking about my cat I'm far more likely to say 'my loves their catnip toy' or 'my cat loves her catnip toy' than I am 'my cat loves its catnip toy'. In fact most people use their/he/she when talking about their pets over 'it'.
No, "their" is not used for singular possessive.

I was looking at the picture of the triangle and noticed that the little square that tells you if the triangle has a 90 degree angle, is not on the figure. So none of them could have used that formula, because you have to have a ninety degrees to use it. If I'm not mistaken obviously.
They didn’t put it but the producer talking to them says it’s a right triangle making it a given value in the question
Josefa Flores if I’m not mistaken you’re supposed to be able to TELL if it’s a right angle triangle without the 90 degree angle being identified. However the producer actually TOLD them that it’s a right angle triangle.

If you are not able to go to college then yes, you can still get the career you want but you will likely have to work much harder for it.
