  • The brass band of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire under Prof. Stephen Arthur Allen perform Gustav Holst's A MOORSIDE SUITE (1927) 1. Scherzo 2. Nocturne 3. March as part of Dr. Allen's guest lectureship in June 2018 arranged by Andrew Stone-Fewings (Head of Brass) and Ian Porthouse (Director of Brass Band Studies). It has been 40 years since Andy and Steve were undergrads together at the then Birmingham School of Music and this reunion in the concert hall of the brand new Conservatoire building in its first year of existence was very special. Thanks to the band and all concerned for having helped make it happen. This performance followed a single run-through of the suite as part of Steve's presentation of his Holst research published in the Musical Times (Winter 2017) 'Symphony Within: Rehearing Holst's A MOORSIDE SUITE'. The performance was given as part of the Conservatoire's Open Day. If you want anymore - here you go: vimeo.com/429663016 Enjoy!

the chord at 13:08 is so beautiful, the trumpets/cornets are slightly scattered right beforehand and then they come together for that perfectly tuned chord it's so good

Well done, a good overall performance with a lilting and lightness of touch in the Scherzo. Thank you

Hearing this piece played by an ensemble from the "Birmingham Conservatoire" .... prods memories of the 1970s and 80s of their ancestors .... another group of commited brass students from the very same institution which as "Birminham School of Music" wasn't simply an ad hoc group put together for a concert but ended up staying together and becoming a serious force in English banding after they were promoted to the brass band Championship Section in 1978. The group subsequently became known as the Jones and Crossland band after receiving sponsorship from the Birmingham music shop.
