  • While on holiday in Marrakech, Heather and I experienced our first sandstorm. While I recall one happening when I was a boy living in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, that was forty years ago.
Earlier, we had driven back from Ourika Valley in the south. We saw the sandstorm on the horizon and drove into it along the highway into the city. The built up city, full of buildings and surfaced roads protected us from the full effects of the sandstorm.
As the sandstorm enveloped the city, although it felt still quite humid, the temperature had dropped significantly. The light and heat from the normally scorching sun were dimmed by the think cloud cover of whirling sand.
Later that night, we rinsed the dirt from our clothes and our shirt and trousers were filthy with dust.
