- In an effort to push video content out to its consumers in the mid to late 90s, Nintendo distributed VHS tapes, often free of charge, via mail and retail outlets. These videos showcased select games and consoles in an attempt to market them to target audiences using contrived plots and over-the-top actors.
This video (part 1 of 10) presents "Donkey Kong Country Exposed" which Nintendo distributed for free to subscribers of Nintendo Power Magazine in 1994. The video features interviews with the staff of Nintendo of America regarding the new ACM (advanced computer modeling) techniques used in Nintendo's newest game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Donkey Kong Country. Viewers were urged to pre-order their copy as soon as possible and were also shown a glimpse of Nintendo's next ACM game, Killer Instinct.
Back in mid-1994, my dad received this tape in the mail. I must have watched the tape a dozen times, not realizing that just two days after launch he would receive the game from my mom as part of his birthday. To top it off, it was the day before Thanksgiving so not only did me and my brother have a half-day at school, we came home to my dad getting one of the best games of my childhood that we would be able to play for 4 days going into one of the best times of the year. DKC cemented for me how great video games could be, from the music to the gameplay to the texturing and shading, to the fantastic memories. Nothing came close before and very few have come close since that rainy November day in 1994.
Mattster_Ch33f wow dude just wow ...I can almost feel what you went felt on that very day ...Only a 90s kid could understand.....You will never have that feeling again ..hopefully Your son can experience something similar ...But with so much internet ...My son is already bored of this generation 🙁
Same here bro, I got this game for xmas that year and played it to no end. Also watched the tape over and over myself. On a side note, while that memory will forever live within you, you can always make similar memories with your family. I spoil my kids in ways I could only imagine as a kid. They watch old movies with me and appreciate the music I listened to when I was younger. I gotta tell you, having my daughter listen to Metallica and Slayer is a dream! hahahahaha she is not hard core like I was, but we rock out to them and enjoy lot's of 80's music, movies, shows and games. Rock on!
One of the best comments I've ever read.
My dads birthday is November 23rd, the game came out November 21st. So its not hard to see my mom having preordered the game at Toys R Us. Imagine, its raining on the 23rd, youre off school half day because its the day before Thanksgiving and you are 8 in 94. You go home, your dad is also home, and spend the rest of the day hanging with him and your little brother with one of the best games ever.
I still have my VHS and will never forget that special time in history
I'd seriously buy a DVD of all of these Nintendo promos. I used to watch these repeatedly as a kid!
Never watched them in their orignal forms, only through the web. I would love to have a pack full of promos with some extra stuff if possible!
Donkey Kong Country series has become my first time ever since I’ve played the game and now it’s just as good now I cannot new characters are epic adventure fantasy really fun to be around very banana 🍌 day and evening or Sunday night people will question.
as a kid in poverty..this was gold
This particular one was sent to subscribers of "Nintendo Power" magazine through the mail.
@@yauy I wasn't a subscriber at the time. I received an SNES for Christmas and we sent off the proof of purchase to Nintendo to get Super Mario All Stars. They then had my address and I got this VHS, as well as the Star Fox and N64 one. No others though 🤔
This is about the most 90's thing I've seen in a while lol.
To be honest it's kinda bit cringey due to the interviewer from possibly trying too hard to act all cool.
@@georgeray1906 Uh yeah man, that was the entire 90s haha! It's cringe but in retrospect it's so nostalgic and amazing.
For anyone else watching this in 2020 feeling nostalgic...This was 1994, 26 years ago. 26 years before this was 1968, so right now we are the equivalent of our hippie parents reminiscing about Woodstock and the Beatles :-(
hadn't thought of it like that :(
Yep, and you start to understand it a lot more. I'm biased, but I think objectively 94 was a much better time than 68, for example. However, I completely understand the nostalgia for the times we can never get back.
I subscribed to Nintendo Power from like 1991-2008. I remember getting this in the mail and I'm like "what is this?" It was unheard of getting tape in the mail like this as part of a magazine subscription.
Of course, nowadays, they'll just post game trailers online and so forth. Thanks for sharing this. Brought back a ton of memories!
I was one of the lucky people selected for this promotional VHS tape and I watched it over and over. That Killer Instinct finale made my head explode. At the time I was already playing the crap out of KI in the arcades and was a master juggler, ultra combo freak. I miss the innocence in that time of my life. I was born in 81 and grew up playing and consuming Nintendo. Truly the greatest era of video gaming and I have shared my love and passion of all things Nintendo with my kids. Nintendo is the only system I allow my kids to play games on other than the occasional Roblox PC game. Nintendo has a charm and innocence that I appreciate. I appreciated Nintendo when I was a kid and even more so as a parent. Great upload and thanks for the trip down memory lane.
i do the same thing with my kids lol
One of the lucky people that got selected for it? I got this in the mail back in 1994 myself, I figured everyone with a nintendo power subscription got one
@@lander77477 idk, never cared enough to look that information up. Sorry if it bugged you that I thought I was randomly selected.
I got one and wasn't a subscriber. But they had my address from something else.
@@RetroHiDef You didn't bug me, I'm between jobs at the moment so replying to youtube comments is sort of my hobby :)
there was a time when videogame news was a rare treat. you either had to go by the magazine section at the local grocery store to read the gaming magazines or you had to wait for some uber rare news spot talking about videogames or if you were lucky enough to have cable you maybe could catch some random gaming news tv show that showcased the latest.
When you got these little trinkets of news it always felt exciting. You would be glued to the source admiring the graphics and mentally building your holiday wishlist for your parents.
Now-a-day, we are spoiled with gaming news all over the internet. That same magic from back in the 90s is unfortunately no more. The times are changing and this generation of kids have their own form of nostalgia building memories. Those of us who lived in that era of gaming only have the vague memory of such a time and its great to think back on it. And while it sucks that we cant revisit that past, we at least have some amazing technologies that we can look forward to in the coming future.
Had we as kids of the 90s seen the games of today, I dont think our simple minds would had been able to handle it. The high fidelity in 3D graphics. The massive explorable virtual worlds.
We simply would not know what to think of it. Our minds would had been blown away... just imagine it...
So true. I remember looking forward to going grocery shopping with my mom because as she shopped, I went straight to the magazine aisle to read gaming news. Pissed me off when all the premium magazines starting sealing them, forcing you to buy them. Luckily there was always 1 or 2 hanging around that were opened, most likely by another kid.
#Preach
I remember looking in the video game magazines at all the amazing looking Mega Man toys for sale .
GTA3 when it came out on PS2 really blew me away, and I sat there thinking "Video games will never look or play better than this." so I know what you're saying is complete truth.
Remember as a kid watching this video and seen Killer Instinct for the first time lol remember screaming with my friend in my room and my mom coming in scared something happened loool remember rewinding that part like 1000 times! those where the days man we will never get that back. Now hitting my 40’s im Glad I experienced that. Then after it hit the arcades i was there playing it almost every day. Here’s to the 90’s.
Hell yea man! What an awesome time.
Nostalgia is so bittersweet. I'm so sad that times just feel so much worse, but I'm so happy to have the memories I do.
Such a golden age in gaming! love how you show so many quality old school items :) Its great looking back at this stuff! keep up the awesome videos Bob :)
The golden age of gaming. No internet for tips. No bs dlc or online multiplayer. Just you and your bud on a couch swapping controllers when you die. And the wonder of playground rumors of what someone else discovered in the game that you couldn’t wait to get home to try. And maybe a magazine or two in the mail to read on the latest upcoming games. God I miss being a teenager in the 90s.
This - is - so - fucking - amazing! Great marketing! Even in 2015 this gets me hyped to play Donkey Kong Country like nothing else.
+fuckyou7037 They literally mastered marketing and showed how confident they are that Nintendo had a goldmine with DKC.
Remember getting this tape in the mail. Never will forget the end when the developers are playing Killer Instinct. Blew me away when I was younger.
Oh my gosh, I remember watching this video countless times as a kid as I waited months after the game's release while trying to convince my parents to get it for me. After all these years, I'm surprised that I can even remember some of the dialogue in this video ad verbatim.
That Killer Instinct easteregg.
I would've shat 16 bits if I had found that as a kid
RiskyStrats It was a the ARCADE VERSION on the "ultra 64" prototype ! 😉
I had this video as a kid, lost it since, thank you for the upload, Just realized that I'm watching on the day of the 22 year anniversary of the release of Donkey Kong Country...damn I'm old...
same here man,..im 36,..i still play and listen to DKC,.i was 14 when this VHS came out,..i lost it,..today is the first time i see it in more than 18 years or so,..peace majik.
17:20-17:34 What?? There's more???
OMG!! Killer Instinct!?!?!?
That was probably all your reactions when you saw this back in the day.
+Justin Blystone nintendo is supposed to be kid-friendly
Tanookiracoony Studios LOL. It was the 90s, the kiddy fluff stuff was over when the 80s ended.
+Justin Blystone Unless you count Kirby, but even THAT'S stretching it QUITE a bit.
+TheKaBlammer Agreed. Even Kirby's cuteness can not be denied.
The North American box art always had him looking angry. That's just the way youth-oriented advertising was in the 90s: Attitude was the name of the game.
It's interesting to hear him say "men" instead of "lives". I never hear anyone say that.
I fondly remember getting this VHS in the mail after coming home from school one day. It was a treat! The Killer Instinct teaser right at the end got me pumped, too. So glad the SNES era fit squarely into my years as a kid. Thank you for allowing people to see this again - I'm not sure what happened to my VHS copy, so this was a trip.
I had a Nintendo Power subscription and I got this VHS in the mail. I watched it like crazy and one day was able to get it at a local mall. Such a magical experience. One of my favorite games to date. 🍌
Thank you for uploading this. I got sent the vhs and t-shirt as a kid. This was the most hyped game of all time to me. In my top 5 for sure.
I had this exact tape when I was younger, and even before watching this video - i could still remember the lines the people said, what happened in the video.. I mustve watched it hundreds of times, just like you did, haha!
Thank you so much for uploading this. So much nostalgia.
I had this video! I watched it about 8 billion times when I was a kid. Thanks for uploading.
that line "Once you've watched the video a few hundred times and memorized every detail"...
That was me with the Pokemon promo VHS I had.
I felt so ahead of the curve XD
Thanks for uploading these Bob. Looking forward to the rest! :)
You're welcome. :) Glad you enjoy them.
+World of Nintendo You Should make a video to look at the dkc game board.
I'm very curious to see inside it.
@@yauy I have the actual order of the VHS tapes you have, and you missed four of them. Here's the order:
Super Famicom Perfect (released in Japan in 1990, the oldest one you missed)
Super Mario All-Stars (released in the UK in 1993, the second oldest one you missed)
Donkey Kong Country Exposed
A Journey Through Yoshi's Island
The Invasion of Nintendo
Nintendo 64: Change the System
Star Fox 64
Hot Topic: Diddy Kong Racing
Nintendo 64 Introduces Three New Ways to Bring It

Hot Newz 64
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Hot Video Preview
Walmart Hey You Pikachu! Preview (also released in 2000, the youngest one you missed)
i remember this video and seeing killer instinct in the background at the end as a kid. :D I am 31 now O_O
Man, this brings back memories, I watched the Donkey Kong Country video so many times the tape started to wear out. Thank you for uploading this :)
i used to own this and the star fox one, im really glad you put these out! takes me back to when i was a kid and my dad would bring this and a magazine from the mailbox once in a while.
Every time I watch your videos I get a nostalgia attack
DK still looks and sounds amazing to this day!
Love this game, and 2, and 3.
Really excited for the rest of this series man! My friend Phil had this VHS when we were kids, but totally don't remember that secret ending! I used to have the Yoshi's Island one, and I'm pretty sure it was that same guy. Thanks for sharing Bob!
You're welcome. :) I'm glad you'll enjoy them and that they'll bring back some fond memories... that's the main reason why I'm posting them.
I remember receiving this! Great memories. '90s as hell.
Thank you for preserving this.
Oh man, this brings back memories. Tapes like this, Nintendo Power, my friends and I staying up til dawn playing NES & SNES, coming up with our own ideas for games that didn’t go anywhere...
I really miss the 80s & 90s every now and then. Not to sound cliche, but it was a simpler time.
I got my vhs dkc when i sent in my snes proof of purchase to receive the free all stars game. . 94.thank you for posting this it took me back. Dallas tx 75217 DCC fan.
Thank you so much for uploading this. I have so many fond memories of watching this, then getting excited at the Killer Instinct bit at the end (I replayed that so much!). Those were great times. 🙂
Amazing! I had this back in the day, thanks for the upload.
Thank you so much for sharing your gift with us! I grew up playing this game, but never knew they had promo videos, & I think it's the coolest thing I've seen!
Well, I have played those game over and over again for the last 29 years. Such undeadly classics!
Watched this a few times as a kid, but it's been at least 25 years since I've seen it. Maybe because it's so short but I remembered a bunch of it still. Thanks for posting this.
Wow! Playing on my SNES Classic and was reminded of this video. Typed in ‘DK promo video’ and here we are. Fantastic memories. Thanks for the upload.
Great stuff I remember getting this from a charity shop as a kid used to watch it then play the game on my SNES.
My Lord, I was 6 years old when I remember getting this VHS! It certainly takes me back being 33 years old now! Something about those 90’s years…much simpler times and a lot of love and togetherness compared to today. Great vid and thanks for posting!
I had that tape! Im so glad someone kept it :D
Been about 25 years since I last saw that vhs. I love finding things I saw when I was younger to see it again. Thank you
I got this in the mail when I was a child. Don't know what happened to it...but this morning I picked up another copy for 50c at a resale shop. Woot!
I remember not only this game but this video like it was yesterday. I used to watch it all the time and was so stoked when my parents finally got it for me. I was 7 years old when this game came out. #MemoryLane
OMG the Killer Instinct ending was amazing. Ppl heads must have exploded when they saw this!
good thing you came with us cause boy your gonna learn some things that boy you ain't gonna learn anywhere else
Thanks so much for archiving this
I remember this VHS I miss this so much.. this is what got me hooked on donkey Kong country games
I had this VHS! 14:33 still makes me smile to this day.
VERY late to the party, but I figured I’d just mention that in addition to the tapes you assembled for this series, I also had a Hey You, Pikachu! promo tape sent to me as a kid. Not sure if more exist beyond that and the ones you’ve featured.
Great videos, thanks!
Late or not, you're always welcome. Thanks for letting me know (and for watching!).
I remember my dad handing me this after receiving it in the mail. :D I was so excited after seeing this video. This game is still amazing. I enjoy it much more than the Super Mario games.
The banana budget on this video must have been through the roof!
"...there's 8 chips on this, 4 megs each, which makes it a 32 meg game, the biggest game ever."
It was 1994, back then that was alot.
"We got Winky the Frog, he's bad"
Yes he is
My dad saw my brother and I so hyped about the game after getting this VHS that he surprised us with the game on release date. We didn't have a lot of money, but he made it happen.
i remember getting that video back in the days.. was a great day when when the game came out ^^
You're not alone buddy, I saw this tape like 200 times :D
i remeber receiving a vhs about st2 turbo for snes. at the time me and my friends were playing sf2 snes when it came in the mail and were so hyped we ripped out sf2 before realizing it was a bhs tape....... was a nice feeling while it lasted.
God those old vhs covers man. That was a pretty cover I have to admit. :)
I had the Donkey Kong video one once. Can't tell you where it is today. I sold all my Nintendo Power game posters for 20 buck at garage sale this year. I had 3. I used to have dozens when I was a kid. I sold my Super Nintendo 4 years ago for a $100. My Sega Cd went for $150 though. Sorry Nintendo.
Wow the promotion seems more formal these days. It looks like these guys just gathered around like buddies to talk about the game back then.
I got this VHS in the mail when I was a kid and watched it hundreds of times. My dad took me to Toys R Us to preorder it and I got this cool DK shirt.
I have along with magazines and it immediately takes me back to my childhood. My videos are still wrapped in plastic.
For those who care I was born in 1996 I find it to be a very interesting piece of video game history
Imagine the person who put this production together and though: WE NEED TO PUT BANANAS IN EVERYONES HANDS!
Thanks for this.
Your videos are such good quality
I was a 90's kid who had this, thanks to my brothers.
The host of this was hilarious. I wonder if he went on to do more tv work?
Holy hell, I just realized the host is Comedian Josh Wolf
11:28 "new movies like True Lies, Mask" ahhh memories
I still hear George Zachary's whistle in my sleep.
6:19 Password Diddy! Haha my dad and I used to quote this to each other all the time when I was a kid😂
What a weird post-credits scene in such a Nintendo promotion video to end that to pitch black and nothing to wait for lol
That's how VHS were
Thanks for posting had this VHS as a kid aswell nostalgic af awsome 🍻🤙🤙
Thank you brother!!
I had this VHS as a kid!!! I hope I can find it somewhere!!
It doesn't get any more 90s than this
10:30 Uhhh, I'm in gamer heaven. Was this place at NOA? It looks like the greatest video game store of all time.
Yeah that's at NoA. Not open to the public though.
Lmao when the music guy tells him your losing it dude 🤣
Fun fact, the guy hosting this is comedian Josh Wolf. It blew my mind when I found that out!
All of these hotshot Nintendo programmers were young guns, my age now in their late 20's - 30's man. Amazing man. Seem like cool people. They're like in their 50's now.
Had this vhs as a kid, awesome. The killer instinct version they played had the arcade graphics. The arcade style never got released which made me upset! The Snes version was watered down.
I love how Nintendo Power in the 90's was both corporate propaganda and yet, it didn't lie to me. Whatever game it gave a push was usually worth buying.
Is it weird that I find these kind of videos relaxing?
not at all. I do too.
thank you
I had this tape! I truly wished I hadn’t lost it.☹️
I had this video tape. Watched so many times I can't count them.
I remember getting DKC, N64, Star Fox, and Diddy Kong Racing ones. I'd watch those things dozens of times in preparation for the games' releases. Now that I have the internet and UA-cam I barely watch any previews of games anymore, go figure.
You sound like Matthew Broderick :) Anywho... up until recently I had no idea these things existed.
i used to binge watch this video cause they dude is such a fricking geek
I remembered the end with Killer instinct on the Future "ultra 64".i was shocking !! Here the first time i see this vidéo since 1994 !!!!
X-TREEEM 90'z 'tude! Dope, yo!
Sonic X-treem
I wish I still had all my tapes. They were lost in storage years ago and I miss popping them in for a watch. :(
That packaging is beautiful.
Aaaaaahhhhh I remember this VHS!! I was only around 2 or 3 at the time and remember wanting to eat a banana while watching the footage haha!
I used to leave my games on for about 5 minutes after the credits rolled to see if there were any secrets at the end. I did the same with this VHS and holy as a 12 year old seein KI on the ultra64. I went nuts.
this was great!! i was 7 when this came out. No one is overweight haha
I watched this so many times when I got it. It actually did have me craving bananas by the end of it. I remember two quotes that stuck out. "Lets find out what Donkey Kong Country is all about lets go inside. Lets do iiiitttt!" and "These guys play this game 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and guess what folks guess what? They get paid"
oh god, the flashbacks...
