Ignoring the wild die, the return on investment in this system gets less as you advance so you actually get less power creep. At d4 you have a 25% chance to succeed at an average task. At d6 you have a 50/50 chance, at d8 63%-ish and so on. Also conversely negative modifiers have less effectiveness on a larger die. So you're in this weird place to find balance. You're better off getting good enough at something and then investing advances elsewhere. With a fixed d20 any bonuses are always 5% increments... So as a player you're always in search of those bonuses and ways to maximize them. You're almost forced to hyper specialize. In SW, your better off reducing your penalties first and gaining a few bonuses where you can.
