Nice video. I didn't realize there were two different types of internal fans. I'm currently using a Dell R520 with 8x 10GB WDs and running TrueNAS. I'm thinking it's time for an upgrade and I've been looking at the R740XD.
Yeah, that is great for testing but not for production use, you want ZFS to see the bare drive and not a virtual emulated drive. I have ran it in both scenarios but if it is production always need HBA and pass thru bare drives.
You can't adjust the speed for the high performance fans? Also shocked you didn't put a 10Gbps SFP+ card in it atleast. This is the server I'm looking at to use for my next TrueNAS, although I'm eyeing using SAS SSD's, 40Gbps QSFP+ and as much RAM as money can buy.

Hello thank you! And yep the high performance fans are for GPU powered nodes mainly there are some CPUs that will need the HP fans
R710 freenas and I have running on a USB. USB 2.0 32gb for years. Never have I been able to configure the jails. Just used it as back up storage. Has.
Never got the hba done just ran it drive as a raid 0 pre drive on the idrac6
