  • The BMW F900XR is the newcomer. It’s an all new bike, derived from the 850GS, but being an XR comes with street manners. It has a parallel-twin engine, a superb riding position and it’s fast without being scary.
    Some people say that the small Multistrada 950 is even better than the big one. We got the S version, which comes with all the goodies you might wish for, including the electronic suspension.
    In this film our mission is to find out which one is better. The BMW F900XR or the Ducati Multistrada 950S?

    GREAT REVIEW, finally a nice city review. Especially the heat point. A bike is also ridden daily and not only for touring. Engine heat and city comfort are very important.

    I test rode the F900XR back to back with the Multi 950S. My head said the BMW was a safer choice and and easier bike to immediately feel comfortable with, but my heart said the Ducati. I’m now 1500 miles in on the 950S and I am SO happy with it. The ride position, the playfulness, the response, the tech... it’s awesome!! The heat is a non issue, don’t know why it’s mentioned. My bike is purely for fun and touring... sunny days and twisty roads. Maybe it would be different if it was an urban commute, but for what I want, which is boat loads of grins, it’s absolutely perfect! Luggage is fab, passenger ride excellent and as for the suspension options, i love it more than I thought I could!

      Hello mate im in the same boat I just been on the 950s and love it, im just worried that maybe the f900xr would be better for sportier riding with the 17 inch front wheel? what do you think?

    • @lyndonstickley4543
      @lyndonstickley4543 3 роки тому +9

      Jamie dyer that was a consideration of mine too, though I’m not a die hard speed freak. The problem with the f900xr for me was that it felt a bit bland. And it seemed to have such a natural default for the centred upright position that I felt like it was trying to return me to upright as I was leaning it. Whereas the 950s just kept wanting to lean more.
      I’m no biking expert and so don’t have the miles or years to tell you about the 20 bikes I’ve owned... this is my 3rd bike and I got into biking after 25 years driving... however, what I can say is that I now know 2 multistrada 1260 owners (1260s and pikes peak) who have decades of biking experience and now own 950s’ and say that it’s the best bike they’ve ever had - because they can ‘rag everything out of it and have loads of fun.’
      Every time I get on mine, it feels like an event. I’m not sure if I’d feel the same about the bmw. In fact I know I wouldn’t. I also rode a mate’s bmw r1250 RS exclusive last week... he raves about it. And you know what? It felt awful compared to mine... quickshifter like a tractor and nowhere near as exciting. Btw I have nothing against BMW’s and to be honest I’m not a fan of Ducati as a brand because I’ve got cars in my blood rather than bikes so I just take each bike on it’s merits rather than pedigree.
      I was going to test ride the S1000XR as an alternative as the bmw sales guy said that it would be a better comparison, but I decided that I didn’t need or want 160bhp!
      In summary, the 950S is playful, exciting and super capable. But it is very upright, which is exactly what I wanted. A 17inch wheel would make it more focussed and sporty, but also throws you forward and loses the upright position (like it does with the XR or the 1260S). So, I’d say that position has to play a big part in the decision making, whatever bike you are looking at.
      I came from a Z900 RS and it had a virtually identical position to the XR. And although both on 17 inch wheels and with a more forward position, I feel that I can be way more aggressive and confident on the 950S (than either of the other two) because it feels more nimble, leans harder and has an unbelievable quickshifter.
      Hope that helps!!
      Happy to answer more questions though everything is subjective.
      👍🏻

      @@lyndonstickley4543 Yeah I feel you. I was following the freelance test rider on the ducati and it was honestly one of the best experiences of my life, he was not messing around. I couldnt feel the bike move at all during the ride, the active suspension was amazing at keeping the bike planted.
      I am beginning to think that the 19inch wheel and the height is part of what makes the 950s so exhilarating. Comparing it to my mums MT07 you can throw the 950s into the corner and get so much lean angle it feels scary where the MT07 eats up every corner so well it makes you want to push it at insane speeds into corners just to try to get it to lean over, plus you can feel every bump and mistake you make, even not being smooth enough braking.
      The 950s is definitely my dream bike for sure!

      @@lyndonstickley4543 you had previously the z900rs.. So let me ask... What's about the abrupt throttle response in on and off fueling? Was it annoying? Sure the 4 cylinder engine had another more smooth character than this L twin brutal force engine on the Italian beauty, but they say that being low geared the Z900 rs is a torque monster lifting the front wheel even in 3rd with a pull of the throttle... Consumption was another issue not to choose a 4 cyl bike.. But Tell us your experience... What you miss more from the Kawa?

On 1 occasion it was 38c, I found myself on the log jammed freeway, cars everywhere and my air temp sensor was saying it was 56c! All the heat from the other cars and my bike was slow roasting me! The Tiger 900 GT pro was a consideration for me when testing these two in this review. From what I’ve read, it is a real contender. But I couldn’t get around to getting to the dealership to ride it, because in my heart, I couldn’t love it enough from it’s aesthetics... it just felt very safe from a looks viewpoint and so my heart wasn’t in it. Dodgy logic I know, but each to his own. However, I can comment on the Tracer 900 GT as I regularly get on and off one of those, back to back with my 950S as my brother has one and we swap on rides. For the money, I think the Tracer GT is unbeatable. The function, form and luggage make it fantastic value. It’s light, very quick and easy to ride with confidence. Though it is not in the same league as the 950S. The difference in build quality is really noticeable throughout, as well as ride quality, comfort, position, stability. Everything. I suppose if you’re on the small side and are intimidated by the weight of the Ducati at junctions and slow speed, then the Tracer is much easier to handle. And it’s engine is very responsive. I personally couldn’t get on with the Tracer as a permanent bike as it feels like I’m pushed over the tank a little in the ride position... a bit like a scrambles bike, whereas on the Ducati, I feel like I’m sat back more. If your budget is £10K though, then the Tracer is brilliant. If it’s £15K, the 950s blows it away. IMHO 😊

    Heat is certainly not a problem where I live in Scotland.
    With the Ducati I suggest you need to use the revs and gears more. It's also more fun that way. I used to have R1200GSes before the 950S and while the Ducati has less power and torque, it's so much more fun and the handling is amazing.
    Not sure on what you mean by the vibrations.

    My only real complaint is it's a little slow steering. The wide bars mask it somewhat, but at 29.5° it's lazier than a 2021 Indian Dark horse chief.....😂 The trade off is excellent stability and dirt road steering. 👍

There is almost a kind of cheapness to it - I dunno. It just doesn't do it for me. And I don't much care for parallel twins - especially that one. Hello DMR guys. Useful comparison, as is the comments section. Looks like a lot of experienced riders are looking for exactly this package. I suspect any heat issues are now a big deal, with even cool climates getting 40° plus temps. Yes pollution doesn't help. We are 4000 years over due for an ice age, so melting ice caps is pretty normal on the lead up. That's how the oceans are cooled enough for deep freeze down or up to the twenty fifth parallel. Hello Panama! Right?
    Anyway, one issue for me is the clattery sounding engines. After too many years on carefully serviced Kawasakis, I am very used to silky, smooth sounding and long running bikes. How long? Around a million sport touring km, on a handful of bikes. No don't need the searing power anymore, hence the 950 interest, not the touring dragster 1200s.
    The Ducati seems about right, except for the black nose and boring, invisible black front fender. Easy fix of course. Happy Trails!

    Interesting. I rode the BMW last week, and although it's a solid bike, I wasn't really impressed. The quickshifter sucks, the engine and exhaust sound are not pleasant, it feels quite tame, saddle way to hard and made my ass, back and shoulders hurt after an hour or two. It looks cool though, for a touring type of bike. In two weeks I'm testriding the 950s , curious to see if that one cán set my pants on fire.

    I own the 950s, I got it 2 weeks ago, I live in Lake Havasu City Arizona, it if quite warm here. I am pretty sure that most of the heat on my bike is coming from that catalytic converter. I plan on removing it soon. I had a Husky 701 Enduro before, and it was also a very warm bike on my butt then I ditched the stock exhaust and it was way cooler.
    Where my bike seems to get very hot, is you ride, then stop for fuel or to eat, where it sits for 10 minutes or more. This really gives a time for that exhaust piece to just cook everything. The complaint about the engine covers is something I notice only after stopping for a bit. Going down the road for even a couple hours it is fine, stop? There it is.

      I'm moving back to AZ in the next month or 2. Cave Creek. I've been thinking about the 950S. Is the heat enough to where, if you were to do it over again, would it keep you from buying it? Thanks!

    • @gilvietor1918
      @gilvietor1918 3 роки тому

      @@David-xg6ws that is a tough question to answer, I really love the bike, and no matter what bike you get, the exhaust to make them pass emission standards for Europe make a ton of heat. For example, my 701 was really bad on my butt and leg, after I got rid of that, I was actually getting cold (up in Utah and other places high elevation)!
      The bike is just amazing, the only thing is the fuel level indicator doesn't seem to be very accurate, just track your miles even though the computer seems to get mpg correct.
      Recommend, highly. I still plan on getting rid of the catalytic converter, but we're moving to Wyoming soon, so I am not sure I want to do that now as I probably will need the heat!

    I spent over a year living on a multistrada 1200 enduro . The heat when touring in big cities is insane !!! It caused Heat rashes.
    Also even though the bike looks beautiful after just 12 months the engine needed a rebuild.
    I agree the hand guards are pure garbage . Every time the bike would tip over the levers and hand guards would need to be replaced. Not cheap.
    My second year of ownership I was only able to ride the bike 20 days.
    it was in the shop the rest of the time.
    I can not recommend this brand due to ducati red warranty denying my engine rebuild claim due to a dirty chain. I rode 960 miles in 24 hours to the dealer so yes the chain was dirty . Go Japanese

      @@mauriziozanni4161 no need to be mean to gay people they ride motorcycles too. My point wasn’t how many bikes you have put miles on . It was the amount of time you toured on the Ducati .
      I have spent 7 of the last 10 years touring North America . I’ve used 2 Honda vtx1800f3, a yamaha bolt cafe, a Honda vfr1200f and a Ducati . The Ducati needed an engine rebuild after 12 months. That’s not acceptable! Not on a global adventure bike. I met 2 guys on the road who had dievel with same engine both had to be replaced . The day I picked up my bike after the rebuild there was a Ducati sports bike there new with no engine . Guess what mechanic said they had to replace the engine .
      Don’t know what the quality issue at ducati is . I rode 1500 days and 1000 mile days for the iron butt association. But any modern bike should handle that . My yamaha bolt handed 3000 miles in 4 days no problem .
      The bigger issue is ducati blaming a dirty chain because I rode 960 miles in 24 hours to their dealer as the reason the bike was shutting down and restarting on the highway . I almost fell under a semi.
      Had to speak to the ceo to get the warranty honored .
      That’s pure bullshit !!!!!!
      What’s worse is their customer service suggested I have one of the 3 kids charities I was working with pay for the $10,000 repair to the engines internals . How does a dirty chain damage pistons and cylinders .
      I lost the support of two of the charities because of all the delayed the Ducati caused.
      I can’t stand behind a company that doesn’t stand behind their products 110 percent and who’s customer survive pulls the shit they pulled with me .
      They don’t know the first thing about customer service.

      @mike granda If Ducati had the issues you describe, they would not sell the increasing number of bikes they sell worldwide. It could be that you have been unlucky, but I tend to think ( from my own personal experience) that the quality of the average motorcycle technicians (especially in the US) is exceptionally low. Either way, as of now, I also own a Triumph and a Yamaha, and I can't say they have been faultless but since I do repairs myself, I am able to keep all my vehicles efficient. I hope you will be satisfied with your next bike. P.S I didn't mean gay, I meant "posh". My bad.

    • @mxg709
      @mxg709 3 роки тому

      @@mauriziozanni4161 I agree I think they had some issues on that engine model . Or an issue on the factory line. I ran into a guy at Sturgis who had his dievel 6 months and had to have the engine replaced. That was right before mine had issue. I ran into another guy in Alaska . The anchorage Alaska ducati dealer,Seattle ducati,Florida all told me I bought the wrong bike. Them as well as moto forza in Cali told me they couldn’t give my bike away and only sold 1 per year if lucky. I tried to trade mine in to every ducati dealer I could from Seattle to Cali to Orlando . They all said the same thing . That bike will sit here for years. People don’t want them they aren’t as good as the bmw or ktm. It took a year to sell mine and that was to a used bike dealer at a giant loss. But since I couldn’t ride the bike because it had another breakdown I had no choice but to sell it and drive a rental home.
      Only bike I ever regretted buying . Destroyed a life long dream and project that took years to set up.
      The ceo new that and even when a dealer said they would take the broken bike if ducati just fixed it and they would put me on a demo. Ducati said no. They new the bike was fucked and didn’t want to be responsible for it .
