This has always been a thing for most major awards, people just don't know about it.
Oscars, Grammy, Nobel, Tony all nominees and winners are chosen by people within the industry, most of which are former winners. Because the idea is to have people who know what it takes to become to see who should qualify to win. If it was given chosen by the public, it would be just a popularity contest, people who won are gonna usually pick who's worth it.

Cliche as it sounds to quote a TV show, this was once said in Chicago Fire:
"Heroes are not somebody who was unafraid. It’s the guy that is scared to death and does what’s right anyway."
Sometimes we never realise the brave side of ourselves. It lays dormant until we witness something so egregious that would put life in danger that this bravery comes out. Hats off to those who jump into action with blatant disregard for their own safety for the sake of others.

@@trolltalwar And again, most people don't really defend themselves with guns. They rare stop mass shootings, robberies, or prevent kidnappings. Majority of the defending is usually a result of their own doing. For example, my gun owning friend has a gun because he sleeps with other men's wives. A-holes buy guns because they go around pissing people off.

This is an insane story. Think about it...he's a hero because our government is inept when it comes to gun control and half the country believes owning a semiautomatic firearm is necessary. Our media does reports like this, normalizing the problem with guns in our country, normalizing violence, normalizing the "hero/villain" complex, and ultimately normalizing and contributing to a failing system.
