My recollections of the late 80’s The Box , Alfie’s, de Brett’s, Candios, Sugar reef, (DTM’s early 90’s) Keelies, the terrace bar, the Parnell club. Good times.
Equal parts fun and depressing. Thanks lads for the stroll around Aucklands lifeless inner city in 2023, remembering a time when our generation actually had a cultural identity and contribution. Great to see Uncle Phil coming with the instant golden memories and the casual walk on from living legend Steve Hill . Thanks for the trip down memory lane. The 1990s was a great time for clubbing in Auckland. There were plenty of clubs to choose from, and every one of them packed to the rafters. Waterfront bar over to Loaded Hog, Studebakers, Custom house, Park and Bar, Rose and Crown, De Bretts, Shakers, Base Bar, DTMs, a few others that were in Vulcan lane upstairs. There were clubs everywhere. Some place else was a good starting point at the top end of K Rd, then you either went down K'rd or down to the bottom end of Queen St. Before you knew it, the sun was coming up. There were a few clubs near Vic Park Market that were always packed as well. Good times. 😂 You'd have to plan your night or weekend in advance. There were a few other clubs near JDs that weren't too bad if you wanted to listen to rock/pop music. Plenty of choices for everyone. Downtown had it all.
George, the bouncer you mention in the first 10 minutes, also ran kick boxing classes which I went to for a couple of years. When I first travelled back with my now wife, I was explaining to her how cosmopolitan Auckland was and NZ wasn’t a small place. Turned around in the customs queue and go “oh hi George” - he was the customs agent who stamped our passport on the way in :)
@@shae_sterling Mark Farina was ahead of me in the Customs queue before a gig mid 2000s when he played at Studio, he was super nice about me saying hi to him.
My disco days in auckland were as early as 1979 at Aladdins niteclub owned by John tabla on queen street, next to old civic, and he had another club connected called king creole and Tom sharplin played his rock roll, there was also back in the day Father's mustache on fort street and a gay club called Oscar's, the bouncer called Ono big white dude with bald head, real friendly, there was cleopatras out at panmure, we use to go watch Ardijah play. There was Casablancas up in parnell. Main street a punk scene in upper queen street, the Peppermill nightclub that was located in downtown
Great walk-around guys. Starting at the Box was a nice touch, good ol' George I use to go see him before my shift at Park n the Bar on fort st, he really did know everyone. Even way before that in the early 90s i remember going there for a hip hop nite, but we were literally blown away by this unknown funk band called Supergroove, u just knew they were gonna blow up. Thanks for the video guys, was really great going down memory lane. RE: Grant's comment around weather or not Auckland was known internationally. Our time releasing records in the breaks an drum n bass scene, the DJs (Rennie Pilgrim, Ctrl-Z, Aston from the Freestylers, Tom from Broke records and the Autobots, Dan from Breakbeat Kaos) would always comment about Auckland and its massive reputation on the international level. So many DJs came over here and had such a great time because of the people in the scene, the DJs, the country that it fast became the hot ticket. All thanks to the ground work you guys put in late 80s early 90s. Another thing that was pivital to the scene success back then was the underage feeder clubs like Platnium 104 which groomed young eletronic music enthusiast for the Auckland nightlife. Some that was missing in the mid 2000s.
The good old days are gone sadly. There was some great places back then, fu bar, voodoo lounge, jd’s bar ( I think), too many to try and remember. I went to quite a few back then, time has changed!
I lived in Hamilton and used to travel to Auckland just for the music. Grooverider at Ministry, Greg Churchill at The Box, Chaye D at Fu, Khuja Lounge, Ink, etc. etc. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah I remember Retro Wednesday nights at the Box! My first time there was when it was Club Mirage in 1984 but that High St scene from around 1990-1995 with the Box, Voodoo Lounge, Bobs, the Ox, Queens Ferry, Squid and around that Vulcan Lane was so packed on Friday and Saturday nights - never seen anything like that before that you could hardly move because that whole area was just packed with people! During the 80s you had the pubs in Parnell - The Exchange, Windsor Castle (later became Frames) and the Alex and in town you had The Empire and De-Bretts and Shadows / The Kiwi / The Globe unversity drinking holes! Then you had nightclubs like Casablanca, Zanzibar and Club Mirage. My favourite pubs was the Occidental and the Masonic! Its a pity that a lot of the great old pubs are gone now - back in the early-mid 80s the university pub crawl listed around 32 pubs back then!!!!
Can confirm Nice and Urlic story. We did in fact wander through what I can only describe as a ratrun of dark tunnels to emerge through a grate under the stage to pop out in the front row. I don't think we even knew the guys that showed us the way haha. Also, at the close of Retro (box/celebre) Marshall gave me 12" of One night in Bangkok which I'm happy to say I still have :D
If only we could only step back in time! This club really was the seed that started my creative life and such an amazing experience for me. The best thing was how people from all different walks of life , ages, and communities were brought together by the music. Getting in could be quite a tricky thing, so I felt wildly lucky aged 18 to land my bar job cleaning the glasses! Love the vid! And the cool cameo with Uncle Phil!
Alfie's, the Box, Cause Celebre, the loudness of hotel de Brett's customers spilling out on to the street, the Brain, real groovy moving from fort Street to queen st, techno parties in the tunnels at Devonport and Mikey Havoc working at HMV on Queen st... Great memories!
Fun times. Proper House Music, Techno. A proper underground scene. Then EDM arrived and screwed everything up. My formative years and the birth of House music in Auckland. I’m the old man in the Club these days, here in the US…. where there is still a great underground House and Techno scene where everyone still wears black 😝
Its kinda trippy to watch this and observe it so clearly as "long gone history" (which it is) but at the same time feel like it wasn't that long ago lol
What a cool watch. My parents would always talk about their clubbing days. My dad was a bouncer in the 90’s. A lot of stories. Can’t wait to show them this video
Amazing blast from the past I was so lucky to be out there during this era and went to many of these clubs and quite a few of the earlier scene. Great memories of a golden era in Auckland.
Yup I remember them when I first went clubbing in 2007 as an 18 year old. Town is not as good as it used to be in terms of the variety of clubs there were.
As a teenager from Hamiton, break dancer, Disco Diva, we went to Auckland for break dancing comps...ended up at a club called Diamond Dogs. Our first sight of a real Saturday Night Fever coloured tiled dance floor. Have been back to K Road for Hens Nights...A lot of fun. Kareoke Bars... Awesome vibe. Now as a 62 year old, I still go nightclubbing in Htown, also doing the Kareoke Bars, with a following of fans.😂 There are mic nights, quiz nights, Blues clubs, & the vibe is awesome. Thank you for the memories guys. A very cool tour. Much love & light. 🙏💖
I had the privilege and the pleasure of DJing at all parts of The box in the mid to late 90’s as a female Jungle / Drum and Bass dj. Started in the Ice Box, and then got my chance in the the big room, and then guested with the MIGHTY Manual Bundy at a night he put on called Sunday Skool … what a trip! I loved that era of Auckland nightlife. Thanks for the memories Xx
Guys, lovin' seeing the two of you together again. Obviously you could double this (part 2!?) and I could watch all night. More = Carpark, Blowfish, Pony, Met, Code, Cube, Bass Bar, Beam Bar, Park in the Bar, the Civic underground clubs, etc... Met my partner ro 20 years ago at Coast Bar.
Who is that F.O.B. Uber driver that said fair go is better 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I take your everybody your nose and mouth and king, f.o.b. from South Auckland bahahahahahaha cheeeehuuuuu.
From the sloshing fish tank at Coast to the original stairway down to Calibre, you guys nailed it, although really this just scratches the surface. Thanks!
You missed the Loaded Hog, The Waterfront Bar, Degree bar, Left Fields, Green Room, Carpark bar, Margaritas and Soul bar 😮 all the usual spots back in 2000 - 2007. KRd Voodoo lounge, Ibiza, Angle bar and Bed.
I haven't been back for about 17 years...that waterfront area where the loaded hog was got super packed...wasnt usually great for music...is that all dead down there now?
Great video guys, brought back a lot of good memories! I think u missed a few clubs out though - Blend nightclub, Papa jacks, Dragon Bar, Buhda Bar, Base Bar, Shakers, Crowe Bar, Wyndham Bowling Club, Keelies, Sugar Reef, Cardiac and many more.. Peace out.
Grant Marshall wassup bro party still going brother no reminiscing still going are you on BFM or George keep your mixes coming through Grant Marshall, Rangi on George in Auckland pretty good techno DJ.
awesome bro..I remember DeDrets where they played this a lot ua-cam.com/video/phMX4DBafG4/v-deo.html and other clubs like the BaseBar, just up the road around the Corner .. the Soul Bar at MidCity .. I think Zane opened up a bar called the DeccaBar somewhere on High ST..Shakers down in Custom where Brittomart is now ..Some Place Else up at the top of K Rd Symond ST and a whole heap of pool bars up along K Rd.. I remember the Box . BFM .. 80s90s early 2000s, you remember Coliseum out in Manukau, the Loaded Hog with all the farming equipment hanging from the walls
I've just had a 'trailer with a cage' on BFM flashback! I haven't thought about that show for years. It was the local version of the Solid Steel radio show for me.
Sorry little bit after my time in the 80s, But DB Tavern, Trillo's, Casablanca's, Soul Train, The Waitemata Hotel, The Lion Red Tavern, thats when Uncles Takeaways was opposite Aotea Square, And Maccas was New in Auckland, All the Space Invader Palours were great also, Awesome video Guys.
Very cool. Brought back some hazy memories of the 80's, thanks boys. Rembr the late 80s with Mike, Hunter, Matt, etc - De Brett's house bar, Alfies, The Box, and Wednesdays upstairs at The Globe to see The Greg Johnson set. Once or twice to The Powerstation where Mike, Steve, Andy, + were cutting their teeth Don't tell Mama/DTM lol- I was trying to rembr the name during the whole clip. Glad u included it. Was a massive venue at the time, converted cinema with big bars upstairs and down.
Cool video Shae, brings back memories of dancing at Site as a teenager and I loved the music at Cause Célèbre. We would also hang out a lot at Rakinos and Deschlers on High St. I remember the Globe pub full of University students, playing pool a lot at an upstairs bar called Escape in High St and later on nights at Crowe bar on the other side of Queen St. There was another downstairs bar off Queen St that played great Drum'n Bass, I can't recall the name. Glad you mentioned Khuja Lounge, that was my favourite, the music there was always wonderful.
Nice little trip down memory lane. You missed a few iconic bars like clubs on Wyndham St, Fu Bar on Queen. Ink & 420/Rising Sun on K. Hopefully, they'll make the next video
Yes! I agree! Can't forget Herzog that place was iconic, like literally with all its religious icons all over the place. Various Mary statues of all shapes and sizes. Saw some great shows there. Also Galatos around the corner. And have to acknowledge Gary Steels input with his record shop Beautiful Music. ❤️
Enlightening review thanks. I wonder what could be done to help some of these cultural venues survive rather than just the memory of them .. the King's Arms springs to mind`
And then there was the super underground locations like Normanby road playing psy trance... shit what happened . There was so much going off in Auckland back in the day.
I loved Amazulu! Quite sad when it closed. They made a very passable brew, too. There was also an African/Carib club opposite side of the street and upstairs in the little building second along from East Street. Not far from Amazulu was the Poly club La Penina, entrance on Beresford Street. Enjoyed a few nights there.
Haha, wow I can barely remember those days as I've erased most of the early 90s from my memory of being a student there at AK Uni, but this walk around triggered a few haunted throwbacks! There was De Bretts, Club Polynz, Club Manhattan out towards Avondale, where all my Poly cuzzies would jam.. those were the days
Club PolyNZ was in Commerce Street, right? Went there a couple of times. Also, Sunset Raro, which moved to different locales as I remember, at least one venue in Newmarket and possibly once in a motel in Grey Lynn (?). La Penina in K. Road was fun.
Respect and Good vibrations brother... Brings happiness and laughs back when you can absolutely remember the times and places that made a real impact for you growing up. Love Aucks and will always... chuuurwhooo ❤
Wow Shae was great to watch this stroll down memory lane. They wrecked Coast Bar!! My favourite nightclubs were all on Fort Street. Boogiewonderland had the best dance floor. Great to see you Shae since Feet of Fire & Firedance days. Much love Virginia
Love this! How can we bring back the dance culture we had? Has the underground culture been lost in time, or can we resurrect it? If you have any ideas let me know, im all in!
@@DJGrantMarshall Sorry if I came across as a pedantic twat with my comment. Thank you for the tour video, so many great memories of a very special time, enjoyed the city tour immensely!

Would be cool to see a hip hop one era 00-05 My favourite was Bass Bar on Victoria. Another fave was one on high street but I forgot the name! Also on high was Rakinos which was soul soul/funk. Wednesday nights at Safari on Ponsonby and Fu bar on queen. Wknds we'd hit the viaduct Waterfront and the massive club beside soul restaurant think was called Headquarters. Khuja lounge up stairs on corner of queen and Krd. Thursday at code bar on high st and there was another one on Wyndham I think was called Wyndham. It’s all a bit fuzzy 😝 but what a time. Hip hop and rnb was 🔥
awesome stuff, need to do one of these for dunedin :P, i was a DJ down here from 2001-2016 worked most of the big bars, sets starting at 9-10pm and some going through to 7am. Had to play everything way back in the golden era of Clubing :D
I could've sworn that Sinners had a simulcast on George FM with TVNZ or one of the tv broadcasters playing a kids tv show and the buildups of the drama and the drop where the characters would all just break out dancing, I swear it wasn't just me!
Oh wow, the nostalgia is real. Some of my best nights out were: - The Box (oh wow that place used to jive) - Coast Bar (so sad to see that as offices I always loved the fish tanks) - Spy Bar - Providore (and wasn’t the big place you showed after that called Leftfield at one point) - Danny Doolan’s - The St James (wow, the multiple rooms with different music genres in each … I’m pretty sure, if my memory serves they did ‘Gate Crasher’ there and would connect with The Ministry of Sound night club live in London - where I now live - on the screens) - Calibre - Sinners (oh man the nights in there haha…I will take some of those glorious memories to my grave 😂😂) There was also an amazing, more mainstream hip hop club in/under the Sheraton does anyone remember what that was called. I also had some fun nights there for something different to the usual house/trance/garage vibes. Brilliant nostalgia. Thanks boys! 🎉👏🤩
That biggest club was originally leftfield where I started as a glassy, Lennin was next door and yup coast upstairs! This a great vid! Where my era in NZ Hospo started as a 17year old kid drinking with the bouncers, all across the city, you forgot 76, Bed, ink bar and the end of everynight on krd - supper club aka sluppers. Miss spent youth - and still in Hospo hahaha - epic vid!

Who remembers Globe and Margaritas during the early 2000s. Absolute god tier clubs
Yup I remember them when I first went clubbing in 2007 as an 18 year old. Town is not as good as it used to be in terms of the variety of clubs there were.
I remember globe and margaritas
Oh man, Globe. Always a productive hunting ground to find travellers keen to experience some 'indigenous flava' lol
AUCKLAND STAND UP! Thanks for sharing this brother, bless up man!
Alfies was where it all began for loads of us ... back in the Siren days.
Hard!
🤭
Who are these 2 clowns in the Auckland city who's DJ grant ?
As a teenager from Hamiton, break dancer, Disco Diva, we went to Auckland for break dancing comps...ended up at a club called Diamond Dogs. Our first sight of a real Saturday Night Fever coloured tiled dance floor. Have been back to K Road for Hens Nights...A lot of fun. Kareoke Bars...
Awesome vibe. Now as a 62 year old, I still go nightclubbing in Htown, also doing the Kareoke Bars, with a following of fans.😂
There are mic nights, quiz nights, Blues clubs, & the vibe is awesome.
Its amazing the contrast between the south island 90s bush doof scene and this scene
Met and Code! My first time clubbing in Auckland 2010, loved those spots. Sad it's gone
Dammm coast ! Place was off the hook
C Inns is that you 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 thought you were gone bro that night
Who is that F.O.B. Uber driver that said fair go is better 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I take your everybody your nose and mouth and king, f.o.b. from South Auckland bahahahahahaha cheeeehuuuuu.
Awesome vid bro this made my day, missed a few iconic clubs but much respect for making the time to take us all through memory lane
This is amazing. Please make more like this about the Auckland scene!!
From the sloshing fish tank at Coast to the original stairway down to Calibre, you guys nailed it, although really this just scratches the surface. Thanks!
Powerstation.
Thank you guys. 🙏 big part of my life in Auckland ❤️ was lucky enough to play and party in most of these 🥳
Loved this video!! So many memories of my years on K road and the Biggie Crew!!! Sinners and Kiss. Thank you for the step back in time
Yay for Biggie and NZRAVE
Much love Itchy
This will be a sad tale for my friend Simon Grigg, & our friend the Hat (deceased). I remember you guys, thank you for this trip.
Late '80s to early '90s were epic in Auckland
Chase Plaza was great in the 90’s, Candios & Cactus Jacks, Then you had Threshold, Club Polynz, Customhouse, Garbos in Mid City
Club Roma , Basebar 😂wasn’t Soul bar in mid city for a while
I used to go there when I was 15, crazy days
You missed the Loaded Hog, The Waterfront Bar, Degree bar, Left Fields, Green Room, Carpark bar, Margaritas and Soul bar 😮 all the usual spots back in 2000 - 2007. KRd Voodoo lounge, Ibiza, Angle bar and Bed.
I haven't been back for about 17 years...that waterfront area where the loaded hog was got super packed...wasnt usually great for music...is that all dead down there now?
Think you were too young for them bro
This brings back happy memories of the '90s nightlife! Many a great night was had in Coast.
Back in the days was way cool
Awww all these clubs of the 80s and 90s ❤😂🎉
Great video guys, brought back a lot of good memories! I think u missed a few clubs out though - Blend nightclub, Papa jacks, Dragon Bar, Buhda Bar, Base Bar, Shakers, Crowe Bar, Wyndham Bowling Club, Keelies, Sugar Reef, Cardiac and many more.. Peace out.
We know there are many many more we set out to chat about the ones that we had played at or frequented, sure to be a second round.
Grant Marshall wassup bro party still going brother no reminiscing still going are you on BFM or George keep your mixes coming through Grant Marshall, Rangi on George in Auckland pretty good techno DJ.
Base bar and Shakers, how many fights did i witness in those clubs 😂 those were the days.
You missed the legendary “Supper Club” in Beresford St…
Bing started multi genre music in one night and open deck nights in Auckland…..
Felt like the most common phrase i heard all the time working in town '... and then we went to supper club' 🤣🤣🤣
Supper club was the last club open I’m 34 now lol
I took a chick home from super club. Memories.
awesome bro..I remember DeDrets where they played this a lot ua-cam.com/video/phMX4DBafG4/v-deo.html and other clubs like the BaseBar, just up the road around the Corner .. the Soul Bar at MidCity ..
Yeah the big bar next to Coast was Leftfield, and Cypher was on the top.
The fish from Coast got moved to Bungalow 8
Left field! Memories
loved Coast
I've just had a 'trailer with a cage' on BFM flashback! I haven't thought about that show for years. It was the local version of the Solid Steel radio show for me.
Sorry little bit after my time in the 80s, But DB Tavern, Trillo's, Casablanca's, Soul Train, The Waitemata Hotel, The Lion Red Tavern, thats when Uncles Takeaways was opposite Aotea Square, And Maccas was New in Auckland, All the Space Invader Palours were great also, Awesome video Guys.
Real groovy records.
QUEEN ST
@@monke9527 Howbout the trams and Farmers !
Very cool. Brought back some hazy memories of the 80's, thanks boys.
Rembr the late 80s with Mike, Hunter, Matt, etc - De Brett's house bar, Alfies, The Box, and Wednesdays upstairs at The Globe to see The Greg Johnson set. Once or twice to The Powerstation where Mike, Steve, Andy, + were cutting their teeth
Don't tell Mama/DTM lol- I was trying to rembr the name during the whole clip.
Glad you mentioned Khuja Lounge, that was my favourite, the music there was always wonderful.
woah so many bars that i used to frequent, but now longer forgotten - worked at Crow for a while
Fu bar
Nice little trip down memory lane. You missed a few iconic bars like clubs on Wyndham St, Fu Bar on Queen. Ink & 420/Rising Sun on K. Hopefully, they'll make the next video
Agree!!!!
The breaks @ Herzog,
Galatos
Yes! I agree! Can't forget Herzog that place was iconic, like literally with all its religious icons all over the place. Various Mary statues of all shapes and sizes. Saw some great shows there. Also Galatos around the corner. And have to acknowledge Gary Steels input with his record shop Beautiful Music. ❤️
My earliest memories of getting into clubs underage was Alfies and Grapes, great times!
Auckland city had the most useless females in those nights and probably still now, if your talking about those nights
Enlightening review thanks. I wonder what could be done to help some of these cultural venues survive rather than just the memory of them .. the King's Arms springs to mind`
Hello from Manjimup western Australia 🦘🐍. I remember those days. 😃
Great video appreciate the work that went into this. Lots of early 2000s memories!
And then there was the super underground locations like Normanby road playing psy trance... shit what happened . There was so much going off in Auckland back in the day.
Before Kiss and Baccio were there it was called Amazulu. It had a microbrewery and was home for Redzone events for aabout 9 months in 1997.
Club Polys😂😂😂 i met my wife there
Club PolyNZ was in Commerce Street, right? Went there a couple of times. Also, Sunset Raro, which moved to different locales as I remember, at least one venue in Newmarket and possibly once in a motel in Grey Lynn (?). La Penina in K. Road was fun.
Respect and Good vibrations brother... Brings happiness and laughs back when you can absolutely remember the times and places that made a real impact for you growing up. Love Aucks and will always... chuuurwhooo ❤
That white upstairs office space you went into on Krd was Bacio from what I could see.
Shot for the trip down memory lane boys! Grant love the Ripe t-shirt
Thanks for showing ex Auckland nightclubs. There was a night club called Alfies and also Chases. Just wondering when and why they closed.
Wow Shae was great to watch this stroll down memory lane. They wrecked Coast Bar!! My favourite nightclubs were all on Fort Street. Boogiewonderland had the best dance floor. Great to see you Shae since Feet of Fire & Firedance days. Much love Virginia
Far out, same era. So many good and bad memories from up, down, round and round, those places.
Right on brother good times
We used to hit up Debretts in the early 90s when I was 18 after playing league for the roosters. Many a snail trail left there 😅😅
RIP AK 💔 those were amazing days
Wow this is awesome! Blast from the past!
Love this! How can we bring back the dance culture we had? Has the underground culture been lost in time, or can we resurrect it? If you have any ideas let me know, im all in!
The Drum n Bass night at Caibre was The Breaks which then moved to Herzog.... packed out Thursday nights.
Thank you Dave, could have used some of your expertise on this walk.
@@DJGrantMarshall Sorry if I came across as a pedantic twat with my comment. Thank you for the tour video, so many great memories of a very special time, enjoyed the city tour immensely!
@@daveroperNZ not at all Dave, really appreciate you helping with the facts.
This is positively beautiful
Great video. I was working at both the St James for Deep Hard & Funky and the Grand Circle doing ''coatcheck'' work for the General Manager Tom and Anne Samson. And always straight after work i would meet up with my other friends at Calibre. Thanks for the video, sharing this with my friends..
The Waterfront Bar was formerly called the Rock Garden.
I have a fond memory of walking out the toilet and hearing higher state of conciousness for the first time & with the strobe lights i was 🤯🤯🤯🤯
I used to go to DTM with the glow sticks
Many a night started and ended on that roof carpark 💪 love to see it boys - a lot of memories!!!!!
I used to come to retro-Wednesdays, so amazing!
This is history. Thanks for capturing it. Kia ora.
Omg what a random thing to show up on my feed but the memories 😂it would go off all nighters❤🎉so many great clubs. Goodtimes thanks 🙏
what a great insight in the nightclubs in auckland .was cool will be watching more in this series of your videos
This video was awesome! I am about to turn 50 and frequented all of these spots. Memory lane much? Look forward to more vids Shae.
Shout out to Wednesday night retro in 1998. I once hit it in my St Thomas's School T-Shirt
Good days , city is dead now 🤦🏻♂️
You could do a good walk through too. 🤙🏽
Be a great walkthrough
Hip hop and rnb was 🔥
Awww Celebre days
Memories
RIP Soane 🎧 ❤️
Such a great vid guys. So many memories. Was thinking about some of the early 2000s ones - Suite Bar etc. Makes me miss AKL just a little more.
Awesssome vid was that Steve hill lol 3/4 way through saying bacio
Awesome vid - great walk down memory lane.
what about the base bar (basement bar) where all the Islanders hung out
Great video. Weird to think that if someone did a “retro” night now with music the same age, you’d be playing 90s bangers 🫣
Worked at Calibre for maybe a year while I was at Uni, those 8-10am finishes were brutal.
Ha!! I grew up 80s Auckland Now, let's do a vid, on that era,
Khuja Lounge was also awesome
awesome stuff, need to do one of these for dunedin :P, i was a DJ down here from 2001-2016 worked most of the big bars, sets starting at 9-10pm and some going through to 7am.
Some of my best nights out were:
- The Box (oh wow that place used to jive)
- Coast Bar (so sad to see that as offices I always loved the fish tanks)
- Spy Bar
- Providore (and wasn’t the big place you showed after that called Leftfield at one point)
- Danny Doolan’s
- The St James (wow, the multiple rooms with different music genres in each … I’m pretty sure, if my memory serves they did ‘Gate Crasher’ there and would connect with The Ministry of Sound night club live in London - where I now live - on the screens)
- Calibre
- Sinners (oh man the nights in there haha…I will take some of those glorious memories to my grave 😂😂)
There was also an amazing, more mainstream hip hop club in/under the Sheraton does anyone remember what that was called. I also had some fun nights there for something different to the usual house/trance/garage vibes.
Brilliant nostalgia. Thanks boys! 🎉👏🤩
Wanda is one of my besties..!!! 👯 The good old days.
And was it Leftfield where Sports Cafe was filmed?
It was. Spent a year of my early 20s as the guest Coordinator. What a ride.
I remember city was so cool on High st, Vulcan Lane, Viaduct, Queen St and K Rd. Now the city is dangerous and dead boring.
