The joke inside the Sonarman circles was to look for the absence of sound on your screen. In all of our war game trials vs SSN/SSBN's, we were never found without the TRE team making some Aganger bang a 18" pipe wrench against the AMR-1 hull for 15 seconds at a time (And even then it was a 50/50 chance). This list is a farce. How in the hell is the Akula and Sierra classes ahead of the LA class?The LA class has a better passive sonar suite and better weaponry (Mk. 48 ADCAP torpedo, Tomahawk and Harpoon missile systems ). Not too mention being quieter.

i like subs but Ive always been a ground fighter like marines, army, navy, and my top of all is airforce!.. subs are just a death trap to me. there slow, they can't out run anything. they can be found by navy if just one person scratches his ass while in red alert blackout conditions giving there position away. no offense at all. like i said. i do like them. there very useful. there's just no where to run once its been disabled by a strike. thnks

Decent list, you're correct in putting Seawolf class as number 1. Even though they're older than the Virginia they are undeniably more expensive for a reason. However, the Virginia is probably more cost effective for what that's worth, meaning deploying more subs.

I always try to be as much objective as possible and maybe the fact my country doesn't have a strong army and most of the times it isn't even in the lists it helps a lot :) I know the kind of people you are talking about but you can find the same everywhere. Russians tell me I'm American, Americans tell me I'm Russian, German, French and so on. If their favourite machine isn't first I have to be biased, doesn't matter how many proofs you show them :S Thank you again!

Its a good Sub Im sure. People like to say mine is netter than yours. I dont think thats relavent when your talking between allies. I do know that the US navy was consulting on the project. Trafalgar class was 400m, max upper 500. I think you mean 800 ft which is around 240m. Its better than that. When you talk about max dive depth then its almost doubled. However, these are not recommended. Max on Virginia class is around 490m, and Sea Wolf is around 560m. Remember this is collapse depth. The astute was tested at 300m. The Astute may not have been tested at max because Its a new sub. A rule of thumb is US Navy is 3/4 max depth to test. British Navy is just over half of design depth at 4/7 approximately from my source.
Jesus... he chose the freaking Han for number 10? He chose that 1960s noisy cancer incubator for number 10? At least the Russian cancer incubator, the November, was fast! The Han doesn't even have that for a saving grace! Also, for his entry on the 688I, he mostly showed videos of Flight 1 and flight 2 688s. Only two of the video clips showed actual Flight 3 (Improved) 688s. You can tell because the 688I does not have the dive planes on the sail, the Flight 1 and Flight 2 do. Also, he seems to have put the Sierra, Akula, and Los Angeles in an inverse order of capabilities. The Akula is quieter and more advanced than the Sierra, and the Los Angeles is quieter and more advanced than the Akula. However, I do fully approve his placement of the Seawolf at number one.

But the quietness (albeit it a Nuke version) is unprecedented, acoustic tiles are the most advanced of any boat and its main weapon, its sonar is far superior to anything ever made. Where the fuck is the Gotland class? It defeated the Virginia in wargames, and is one of the most silent (and lethal) subs on earth! The 212A and Gotland should've shared first place. They are truly the best ones on earth. This list just doesn't make sense, im sorry about that.

The 212A does not have the same system as the Gotland, yes, they both have AIP, but two different version, the 212A is driven by fuelcells, which makes more noice than what the Gotland is being driven by which is changes between cold and hot air, and the engines run at 0 decibel. And attack submarines dont need to operate at high depths, neither do they have to be nuclear powered, all they need is to be silent, they can go pretty close to their target in surface mode, and then dive, and yes, the Gotland (and the 212A i think) are used as platforms for special ops, where they launch special forces "for special missions" like u said, hidden underwater. And they have torpedoes, which is an attack submarines main weapon. Plus, you cant say (especially when it comes to attack submarines) that a submarine which have been defeated by another attack submarine is better than the other, and the other doesnt even end up on the list. Im sorry, but 212A, Gotland, and A26 (Swedens new build) should be on 3rd 2nd and 1st place.

OniNemesis Right, Yasin started construction in 1993, then was on hold during the financial crisis, but when it was restarted a lot of things were updated. That's what I read anyway. It should be a badass.
The trouble with all nuclear powered subs is: they are noisy as hell compared to an AIPS sub. So in effect, what you are claiming to be superior subs are simply longer range subs, with a slightly deeper diving depth, but which can still be detected quite easily. I'd rather sit in a non-detectable sub that has slightly less range, slightly less diving depth (although I still consider 700+m depth a more than sufficient diving depth for an attack sub), than in a sub that can easily be detected thanks to its heat signature and noise. Nuclear reactors simply require too much cooling plus active pumps inside to be quiet enough for the job of attack sub. Attack subs should be silent and undetectable, not simply long ranged, noisy torpedo delivery systems. So in that case, I'd rather sit a lot more comfortably in a Gotland class sub of the Swedish navy, or a 212A of the German navy. They at least have proven their stealth capabilities in combined NATO exercises multiple times, even breaking through the combined ASW capabilities of a US carrier group. Including Los Angeles class and even the Virginia class attack subs. Now that is really awesome, and truely scary. As a sub that can't be detected by sonar can strike with impunity at nearly any surface or sub-surface target. Sub-surface ranges without snorkeling of 20 days is more than sufficient to enter and escape any area of operations. I'd really rather be inside something that comes back from combat unharmed with a little less fire power (total of 12 torpedoes, or even up to 48 sub-surface launched missiles) than in something that has a high probability of being sunk, but has a lot more firepower (which it can't bring to bear on targets it can't detect). So you decide which is better: useless firepower in a noisy package with a huge range; or smart, undetectable firepower with enough range to reach any target. I know which I would choose. So, no, the #1 spot does not go to the USA. Again, nearly like always. But that is difficult to convey to US Americans without being taunted as your expletive of choice. So, go ahead, continue shouting USA, USA, USA while the rest of the world smiles at you knowingly.

Maybe with all respect, you should distinguish between Oceanic Attack submaribes, with regional waters ones, i.e. Mediterranean see.. in this case the German-Italian 212A, Todaro Class, shoud rank a lot higher than 9th, perhaps even at 1st.
The Astute is known for the underpowered turbine who makes she slower than other nuclear submarine and many other design issue are plaguing her since the commissioning

No nuclear powered sub is quieter than an Ohio class in "natural circulation" mode. It is undetectable outside of 3000 feet. The joke inside the Sonarman circles was to look for the absence of sound on your screen. In all of our war game trials vs SSN/SSBN's, we were never found without the TRE team making some Aganger bang a 18" pipe wrench against the AMR-1 hull for 15 seconds at a time (And even then it was a 50/50 chance). Side note for useless knowledge = When we went to recertify our D5's in Cocoa Beach, FL (I was on a East Coast boomer) our target was in South Africa and considering that the dummy warhead traveled into space and back, that damn D5 system had the accuracy of "within a football field if you aimed at the 50yard line". i like subs but Ive always been a ground fighter like marines, army, navy, and my top of all is airforce!.. subs are just a death trap to me. there slow, they can't out run anything. they can be found by navy if just one person scratches his ass while in red alert blackout conditions giving there position away. no offense at all. like i said. i do like them. there very useful. there's just no where to run once its been disabled by a strike. thnks

Decent list, you're correct in putting Seawolf class as number 1. Even though they're older than the Virginia they are undeniably more expensive for a reason. However, the Virginia is probably more cost effective for what that's worth, meaning deploying more subs.
Yes in fact the Virginia is a cheaper version of the SEAWOLF.... The main project come from the seawolf but they made it cheaper. The billion dollar baby however remains the best one :)

The Borei is a ballistic submarine so can't be there. It's present in the Nuclear Submarine Top10 and it will be present in the SSBN dedicated list.

The sea wolf is a marvel, its hard to beat it.
The Virginia class should be 2 or 3 since it holds more weapons and is just as silent as the sea wolf class.

Its a good Sub Im sure. People like to say mine is netter than yours. I dont think thats relavent when your talking between allies. I do know that the US navy was consulting on the project.
Trafalgar class was 400m, max upper 500. I think you mean 800 ft which is around 240m. Its better than that. When you talk about max dive depth then its almost doubled. However, these are not recommended.
Max on Virginia class is around 490m, and Sea Wolf is around 560m. Remember this is collapse depth. The astute was tested at 300m.
The Astute may not have been tested at max because Its a new sub.
A rule of thumb is US Navy is 3/4 max depth to test. British Navy is just over half of design depth at 4/7 approximately from my source.

Also, he seems to have put the Sierra, Akula, and Los Angeles in an inverse order of capabilities. The Akula is quieter and more advanced than the Sierra, and the Los Angeles is quieter and more advanced than the Akula.

But the quietness (albeit it a Nuke version) is unprecedented, acoustic tiles are the most advanced of any boat and its main weapon, its sonar is far superior to anything ever made. Where the fuck is the Gotland class? It defeated the Virginia in wargames, and is one of the most silent (and lethal) subs on earth! The 212A and Gotland should've shared first place. They are truly the best ones on earth. This list just doesn't make sense, im sorry about that.

The 212A does not have the same system as the Gotland, yes, they both have AIP, but two different version, the 212A is driven by fuelcells, which makes more noice than what the Gotland is being driven by which is changes between cold and hot air, and the engines run at 0 decibel. And attack submarines dont need to operate at high depths, neither do they have to be nuclear powered, all they need is to be silent, they can go pretty close to their target in surface mode, and then dive, and yes, the Gotland (and the 212A i think) are used as platforms for special ops, where they launch special forces "for special missions" like u said, hidden underwater. And they have torpedoes, which is an attack submarines main weapon. Plus, you cant say (especially when it comes to attack submarines) that a submarine which have been defeated by another attack submarine is better than the other, and the other doesnt even end up on the list. Im sorry, but 212A, Gotland, and A26 (Swedens new build) should be on 3rd 2nd and 1st place.

Why mix nuclear attack submarine to compare? Creative" top10 AIP submarines" will be better. I think you should add Lada-class submarine.

IMHO the top 3 should be:
1) Seawolf
2) Yasen
3) Astute
This would be based on Tech, Silence, Silent max speed & Armament. I'd also list max submerged time but they're all nukes except for the Japanese boat (I'm not positive, but I think thats a DE).

OniNemesis Right, Yasin started construction in 1993, then was on hold during the financial crisis, but when it was restarted a lot of things were updated. That's what I read anyway. It should be a badass.

Most of the clips of Los Angeles subs weren't 688i. The 688i doesn't have diving planes on the sail - only bow planes.

The trouble with all nuclear powered subs is: they are noisy as hell compared to an AIPS sub.
So in effect, what you are claiming to be superior subs are simply longer range subs, with a slightly deeper diving depth, but which can still be detected quite easily.
I'd rather sit in a non-detectable sub that has slightly less range, slightly less diving depth (although I still consider 700+m depth a more than sufficient diving depth for an attack sub), than in a sub that can easily be detected thanks to its heat signature and noise. Nuclear reactors simply require too much cooling plus active pumps inside to be quiet enough for the job of attack sub.
Attack subs should be silent and undetectable, not simply long ranged, noisy torpedo delivery systems.
So in that case, I'd rather sit a lot more comfortably in a Gotland class sub of the Swedish navy, or a 212A of the German navy.
They at least have proven their stealth capabilities in combined NATO exercises multiple times, even breaking through the combined ASW capabilities of a US carrier group.
Including Los Angeles class and even the Virginia class attack subs.
Now that is really awesome, and truely scary.
As a sub that can't be detected by sonar can strike with impunity at nearly any surface or sub-surface target.
Sub-surface ranges without snorkeling of 20 days is more than sufficient to enter and escape any area of operations.
I'd really rather be inside something that comes back from combat unharmed with a little less fire power (total of 12 torpedoes, or even up to 48 sub-surface launched missiles) than in something that has a high probability of being sunk, but has a lot more firepower (which it can't bring to bear on targets it can't detect).
So you decide which is better: useless firepower in a noisy package with a huge range; or smart, undetectable firepower with enough range to reach any target.
I know which I would choose.
So, no, the #1 spot does not go to the USA. Again, nearly like always.
But that is difficult to convey to US Americans without being taunted as your expletive of choice.
So, go ahead, continue shouting USA, USA, USA while the rest of the world smiles at you knowingly.

4) Attack subs need to fulfill different kind of missions.While the AIP subs are smaller,with a lower range and not made to afford blue water missions the nuclear can do everything.Interesting the "noisy torpedo".Have you any idea on what are you talking about?

6) I just know which one is better...machines that can afford any kind of mission without limitations.The AIP subs have only one PRO....they are quieter.But this isn't so important in most of the missions.The SSN are silent enough.Probably only in a sub vs sub combat you will see a difference but also in this case they will probably only run in circles without find the enemy.

Maybe with all respect, you should distinguish between Oceanic Attack submaribes, with regional waters ones, i.e. Mediterranean see.. in this case the German-Italian 212A, Todaro Class, shoud rank a lot higher than 9th, perhaps even at 1st.

The Astute is known for the underpowered turbine who makes she slower than other nuclear submarine and many other design issue are plaguing her since the commissioning

harry rimmer No they are the same sub with "different names". The AKULA is the ORIGINAL russian name while Typhoon is the NATO codename. NATO like to change names and make so much confusion :S

and by the way i talk to a few experts on subs they say that the Diesel-subs are better killers because they are more silent than the nuclear subs they say the only difference is payload and range and speed that puts them behind the nuclear subs id like to know your opinion because of 2 submarines that have impressed me like the FRENCH barracuda-class nuclear attack and the scorpene-class. which is Diesel is the japanese soryu-class better than the scorpene-class or the other way around and what place what you put the french barracuda-class submarine in on this list now that its out their it will be commissioned in 2017 because they are now testing it.

Yes of course but they should have said to you also that these submarines are also less versatile and with less range.The attack submarines need to fulfil different roles and kind of mission while the Diesel are just hunters made to kill other submarines/ships so also if they are the best hunter submarines aren't better than nuclear one following the attack submarine characteristic.
Yes the soryu class is better than scorpene class and the barracuda should enter easily the top5...which spot exactly is still difficult to say I need to search more informations before value it properly.However as I said I'm quite sure it will be around the 3rd or 4th spot
