I believe it is "Wed the" not "went to" it is said chili, but it is the word cheerily, may be being used as a term for quickly. Screw the cotton into the ship quickly "screw her up so cheerily (chili)"

The true meaning of this song seems to have come from a mutiny and child rape... it makes me quite sad. I believe the "singing voice" is one of the elder crewmates lamenting the passing of the Rileys (Billy by dancing the fuck off after ploughing, Missus and Missy at the hands of mutineers) and his inability to stop the younger angry crewmates from leading said mutiny. "Pretty missy Riley, screw her up so sweetly..." That's a hard line to misinterpret.
