    As the ice shelf is already floating on the sea, the effect will be minimal on sea level rise. Ice rafting events happen from time to time naturally its all part of the glacier development and flow cycle. People think that glaciers are immobile, but they move and flow gradually to the sea, and over time, they retreat and advance on scales of decades to hundreds of years. The ice shelf will break away only to reform with fresh glacial ice from the glacier. What they don't tell you is that the snowfall in antarctica will build up on the glaciers also causing them to flow faster. Word is "Don't Panic". There is little to do to respond to this and this has happened and been reported in the last century or so with massive ice shelves breaking up and drifting away to melt. Remember, ice occupies a greater volume than water so the upper portions float. The ice lost to the glacier and iceshelf it forms is replaced by snowfall at the formation regions of the glacier. It's all just a cycle over which humans have absolutely no control.

    • @damianousley8833
      @damianousley8833 Рік тому +2

      @wayne parkinson More snow deposited on the glacier increases its weight, and it speeds up. Also, West Antarctica, where the glacier is located, is a geothermal area. This can have the effect of ground heat melting the ice at the base of the glacier and lubricating it over underlining geology, causing it to also increase its rate of flow. This has also been noticed with geothermal effects on Greenland's ice sheets as well.

      @@damianousley8833 Yes the atmosphere as sped up and so everything within it as also?

    • @damianousley8833
      @damianousley8833 Рік тому +1

      @wayne parkinson Given that the air temperatures are still well below zero degrees Celsius, the effects of air temperature to cause the melting of the ice and cause water to drain. Into the glacier is non-existent. You could raise the air temperatures quite a number of degrees and it would have little effect. One also has to take into account the effects of tides on the ice shelves. Tides can vary from a few feet up to 2 metres and, in some circumstances, to 4,5 metres. The emmence forces and strain on the ice shelves would affect their ability to remain intact. The tides cause the seasonal sea ice to develop cracks and generate leads of open sea, which seals and penguins use to gain access to the sea. Having taken a tourist flight to antarctica and saw the frozen ruggedness from a comfortable 10,000 feet and peered up over the main ice cap sheet plateau, it is obvious that for the last 20 million years that antarctic has been gaining ice and been frozen due to climate induced forces that are not due to CO2 levels. In fact, there seems to be a cosmic ray effect as the sun and earth orbit the galaxy. Every time the sun transits the galactic plane, an area of high cosmic ray flux, the earth seems to cool, and there is evidence pointing to this in Earth's geologic record. Antarctica started glaciation 20 million years ago when Earth entered these raised cosmic ray flux regions of our galaxy. Throw in the orbital change effects in Earth's orbit, and you have the iceage glacial cycles. We have been living in a 12000 year period where the temperatures have been warmer.

      Here in California, a state with very active seismic forces, a study was published a couple of years back postulating that the weight of Sierra snowpack influenced earthquake occurences. As the snow melts throughout the summer and fall, the weight of the snowpack reduces, lessening the downward load pressure on the range. It is rather common folklore out here that fall is the time of 'earthquake weather'. I don't know how much I'd subscribe to this theory, but it is out there. On the face of it, it seems a bit of a stretch, but glaciology isn't my area. Cheers

    The Northern hemisphere is 33% greener than it was in 1900. Sea levels are rising at the same rate as they were in 1865. The hottest decade on record sine the ending of the "Little Ice Age", was the 1930s into the early 1940s. The earth cooled from from 1940 to 1979 by .3° C. There was no warming between 1998 and 2015, the Earth has not warmed since 2016. From February 2016 to February 2018, global average temperatures dropped by 0.56° C. The Earth was warmer, there was less sea ice, and the sea levels higher during the "Medieval Warm Period".
    2022 Summer Arctic sea extent was greater and the ice thicker, than it was in 2008. Antarctica has been gaining 112 billion tons of ice a year since 1992. Yet according to NASA 2022 was the sixth hottest year on record. There is no mass extinction event occurring due to climate change, the Polar Bear population is five times what it was in 1960, and at its highest ever recorded.
    In 2019 more child died from problems associated with obesity, than from malnutrition or starvation. In 2020 the United States produced 25% more food than it needed or could export. All major crop yields have increased three fold since the 1940s, due in no small part to increased CO2 in the atmosphere.
    CO2 is a greenhouse gas, however it has never been proven that concentrations of CO2 will cause warming, in fact we know from ice cores that CO2 concentration lags behind periods of rapid warming.
    The world population has exploded, however it was expected to top out at nine billion, and then begin decreasing. The reason being that as developing nations become more prosperous, they tend to have less children. By depriving developing nations access to cheap fuel, they are forced to burn wood and dung to cook, light and heat their homes, causing massive health problems, deforestation, and leading to a mass extinction event as they kill local wild life to sustain themselves with protein. Bottom line..... there is no "Climate Crisis"
    Why are they trying to scare you?

What we do know, beyond any doubt, is that since 1979 when we first began satellite survey of polar ice is that the area is slowly reducing, and recent findings from the SPOT satellite indicate that not only is the extent of the ice cap reducing, the thickness is as well. The US Navy took note of this years ago, since we have subs operating up there and ice thickness is measured. All this info is out there for any non-biased person to examine. Come back when the ice is melted and you will see it's exactly the same level
    If all the ice melts I won't rise the ocean level.

    Not only Thwaites, but also Denmans glacier is on a slope, prone to a fast slide into the Sea.
    It seems old geology data point sea level rise had happened before, the fact it took place during European winther points water coming from Antarctica, risk of a sudden flood being real.
    This has an anthem, by Johnny Cash: '5 feet high and risin', and an explanation, also Cash: 'The one on the right...'

    Ask yourself why were there mostly cold blooded animals a long time ago and before the ice ages? Because the world was 6deg hotter, the whole world was warm/hot. We are at the end of an ice age which lasted much longer than humans were here over the last 6million years. We are accelerating the end of this ice age, the world yet again will be more suited for cold blooded animals and not warm. The age of humans will end.
