2017 VHBT Obon - Nikkei Ondo

One of the new dances during last summer's Southern District obon season, Nikkei Ondo was written by sculptor Saburo Koga and tells the story of Japanese immigrants coming to the United States. Taken at the Venice Hongwanji Buddhist Temple 2017 Obon Festival on July 16.

アメリカ　その昔、開拓者と呼ばれ日の丸を背負い
日系社会の礎を築いた誇り高き日本人の先輩達がいた。
学校では教えてくれなかった　日系人の歴史を知って
私は泣いた。
そんな先輩方へ感謝の気持ちを込めて、
2004年、数多くの方々のご協力のもと「日系音頭」が

Long ago, America was called a pioneer and carried the ”Hinomaru ”on its back.
There were “proud Japanese seniors” who built the foundation of Nikkei society.
I cried when I learned about the history of Nikkei,
which is not taught at school.
With gratitude to such seniors,
In 2004, "Nikkei Ondo" was completed with the cooperation of various people.
