Riley's GENDER Confusion in INSIDE OUT...

- Have you ever thought about the deeper story in Inside Out? Rumor has it that Riley might be confused about her gender, which could explain why both girls and boys are controlling her emotions. In contrast, her mom's emotions are all girls, and her dad's emotions are all boys. The theory goes that Riley's dad is angry because of her gender confusion, which is probably why Anger's always in control, because she's not becoming the daughter he expected. Riley's mom, on the other hand, is said to be sad about it, explaining why Sadness is predominantly in control. The family might be in a bit of chaos, but they still love Riley for who she is.

No. I think she inherited her mom’s joy, sadness, and disgust. While she got her dad’s anger and fear
Ok but didn’t the dude with curly hair at the end of the first movie (pretty sure that’s when he showed up, sorry if I’m wrong) have all boy emotions as well, like his emotions were freaking out about being near a girl and everything
@Im_a_Piece_of_Paper are you saying Riley’s mature or the boy, because I don’t think the boy freaking out about a girl acknowledging him or being near him is very mature, Riley definitely seems more mature, no hate just pointing it out btw
Yes
@Im_a_Piece_of_Paper I’m gonna be honest and say your theory on why she has emotions of different genders makes no sense to me
MemeQueen1170 i dont think your theory makes any sense, wdym Riley inherited all of her emotions from her mom and dad, everyone has that when they're born, they dont need to inherit it.
Theory: the dad isn’t controlled by just anger it’s the protectiveness side of Anger that’s in lead and the mom isn’t sad she’s just feeling empathy for Riley(my opinion)

Maybe she's more of a tomboy. Remember those?
When I was a little boy, I played with the girls. I played with dolls. I had a play kitchen.
Riley's male emotions are probably there because the movie would be very female-heavy. Which probably came off as a risk that might alienate little boys.
The same thing almost happened in Legend of Korra. But the test audience didn't care in that instance.
Probably wouldn't have cared with Inside Out either. since the movie was about a girl coming to terms with her emotions and had a message about embracing sadness sometimes.

The entire point of the film is coming to grips with feelings you don't understand. To say otherwise is a massive slap in the face to people like me, actual trans people, and the talented, dedicated crew who put so much effort into crafting this timeless story.

Her dad was angry because she was being super rude in that scene and he’s clearly stressed out the whole movie because of the his job and the move. What if I told you that Riley actually has no gender confusion at all whatsoever? What if her emotions haven't evolved to take on her appearance just yet, like Mom's and Dad's did...?
What if each emotion in someone else's head started out the same as Riley's ones are RN before evolving to take on the appearance and body of their owner...?
Or maybe she's the main character and she needs contrast
SuperCarlinBros made a really good video about this - the emotions in the parent's minds look like each parent respectively including matching the gender of the person, whereas Riley's don't. If it was gender confusion one would assume the emotions would all still resemble Riley in some way. Instead it's more likely to be due to maturity/ having gone through puberty where the body and mind settles into a more permanent state.
Riley is a tomboy girl who was upset because of the move. She’s not confused about her gender.

Its so males and females watch to movie, each characters have a MAIN emotion, Rileys is joy, the dads is angers, and the moms is sadness, back in the day Disney didn't do all that stuff too as its a KIDS MOVIE
Theory: I think the more of the gender of the emotions is what Riley is more confident of what the gender she is, Joy is a girl, Fear is a boy, Anger is a boy, Sadness is a girl, and disqust is a girl, meaning that Riley is more confident about being a girl, in Inside Out 2, there is Enqui which is a boy, Embarrassment which is a girl, Anxiety is a girl, and Envy which is a girl, also meaning that Riley is a more confident of being a girl in Inside Out 2, but has some Tomboy in her
As a non-binary person, probably not.
A. Disney wouldn’t make a main character non-binary. (They wouldn’t even make nimona because one of the main characters was gay.)

I have a theory that the main emotion represents your temperament. For mom It's Sadness because she's Melancholic, for dad it's anger because he's Choleric, and for Riley it's Joy because she's Sanguine
Why does everything HAVE to be gay… can’t we just appreciate the movie… it’s literally made for children… children who probably don’t know what trans people are and shouldn’t know until they are older otherwise it can influence them
The lgbt community has FINALLY gotten a little bit of representation in media, so what if there is a kid confused with their gender? Hundreds of thousands of people, including kids are. Kids should be exposed to lgbt couples just as they are exposed to straight couples. You should remember being lgbt isn’t ’just a trend’ and over 80% of people who commit suicide are lgbt. Lgbt people aren’t just toys on a shelf. They’re people too.
I don't see any sign of Riley's parents being disappointed in Riley's gender expression/presentation. If they wanted Riley to be more feminine, they would have discouraged her from hockey. Emotions are genderless by nature

“She’s not becoming the daughter he expected”
Little close to home there ✨
Wait- wait- wait what do you mean RUMOR HAS IT Riley MIGHT be comfused about her gender? This wasn't confirmed anywhere!
This is just a theory, a fan theory
Riley isn’t gender neutral, the reason her emotions have both genders it’s because she’s the main character and not everything has to be LGBT themed.
I just figured the emotions would sort their gender out during/after puberty.
I think she inherited both her moms and dads emotions, but also so the movie didn't just feel like it was a little girls movie.
Idea: these are all the emotions imagining the other's emotions
Actually that’s pretty smart.
People in here saying "its just a cartoon" like real people don't put months of thought and work into creating a movie like this aside, something I would like to add is that the boy at the end who panics because a girl spoke to him and only has a few seconds of screen time has all male-leaning emotions as well; a kid her age.
Disney, and Pixar especially in recent years are both slowly getting more progressive over time to share more stories than just heteronormative plots, and as a transgender person myself, I always resonated with Riley, her emotions being a mix of either portrayed gender being something i picked up on very early into watching it for the first time, and something i, as a non cisgender person, connected to most about the film.
With the teases of the second movie coming soon, though anxiety was the only one depicted in the trailer, the poster seems to continue the mixed gender theme with the new emotions (though it isn't easy to distinguish given how little of the new ones are shown, it just feels like the pattern to me).
not sure how i feel about the parents piloting emotions being the "result" of rileys possible gender identity, and i more so chalked that up to relationship issues between the parents we aren't directly shown, but I am a beliver of the gender identity theory for riley alone. IF Pixar is going down this route, and I say that as a big IF as much as I like the theory, if they played their cards right and spoke to actual queer people, i have a gut feeling these kinds of things wont actually be revealed until a third movie. Though you can be pretty certain of your gender identity at a young age, you are still figuring yourself out in that time and new labels can be a lot. Every person is diffferent of course, but in my own personal experience I've been questioning if i was trans since i was 5 (i was in the ER a lot as a kid so learned what trans was cause of an mtf lady who was in there a lot for complications with her surgery), by 12 I was certain I wasn't cisgender, and i tried different labels all the way until I was 18 and found that trans suit me best where i wished to transition into anything but my born gender. 24 now and in the very slow process of medically transitioning.
What I'm saying overall is if the theory is true, it likely will just be queer-coded until several movies in the future when riley is old enough to be 100% positive with her identity.
But at the end of the day, it is Disney, so they might just continue to queer-code or just full on drop it just to stop the possibility of lgbt theories on one of their films before its out in it's full story. Gotta keep the company all 'good and christian' after all 🙄
What a nice theory

Look i am part of lgbt myself here's my opinion. Its not about the gender its about her being main character its implied to both girls and boys because both gender can express the same emotions..
I have a different take:
So yk how you get chromosomes from both parents? That. But with the emotions. That's why they're two different genders.
Well, actually this was all based on scientific research: sadness is the predominant emotion on adult women, rage is the predominant emotion on adult men, happiness is the predominant emotion on childs (of both genders).
Predominant does not mean the most common in time, but the most easy to grigger, the one in control, as its accurately depicted on the movie. Sorry for ruinning this theory! :-P
I can’t take this anymore… I’m trans but why does everything need to be LGBTQ themed.
yes! also another thing is when people push for LGBTQ people to be treated equally but they're treated completely different to straight people by supposed allies? its hard to explain, but for example people use it as a personality trait. often lgbtq people are portrayed with their sexualities being their entire personality and their entire life revolves around it. or in shows or books you have a tiny subplot of a straight person being in love and then multiple chapters/half the film/multiple episodes are dedicated solely to an lgbtq person falling in love. I think they should be treated the same because they are the same as straight cis people.
tldr: LGBTQ people are the same as straight cis people, so treat them the exact same

Kids have crushes in elementary school so yeah, argument is pretty much invalid.
It's about gender not sexuality. It's literally just a harmless theory no need to get upset
About the part about which emotion is the leader inside everyone's mind, I think I might have an explanation.
So Joy was the first emotion to be ever born in Riley's mind, and as we all know, she is now the leader of the other emotions in Riley's mind.
My theory is that whatever emotion is born first in anyones mind, that emotion will be the leader of the other emotions.
This is a great theory! It might make its way to Inside Out 2, with the premise being that the anxiety Riley feels about coming out is overbearing to her. Don’t let others bring you down!
Or maybe... It's just a movie that just so happened to have the emotions have different genders
Do the emotions know that other people have little emotions in their head too?
I think Riley is actually non-binary, hence the mixed emotions.. Also her mom is led by empathy which merged with sadness, and her dad is led by protectiveness which has merged with anger. Hence the different emotions for leading
No such thing as non binary. You're male or female art birth. You can't choose.
@@Normal1855what about intersex?
The main reason why they put mixed emotions into Riley was so that the film could appeal to both boys and girls, rather than make it heavily girlish. Also, as some other comments said, Riley could have gotten the Joy, Sadness, and Disgust from her Mother and the Anger and Fear from her Father
I believe the point was that mom and dad are already grown up and have established personalities, that's why their emotions all came to look more like them and have the same gender. Riley is still young, so her emotions are all different, since she can't define herself as a person just yet. Perhaps it also shows that some emotions are more associated with gender, for example anger is male, and disgust and sadness - female. Or it could be that dad's appearance and behavior IS what inspired the look of anger in Riley's head.
So i agree with the gender fluid stuff but i think the anger and sadness are just in control yo protect the parents from getting hurt
About gender thingy it's actually not about her gender
1.her other emotions are mixed personalities making Riley special bcuz of that
2.the start of the movie we see that Rileys first emotion is joy explaining why she's the leader her dad was born with anger bcuz it's his first emotion and it's the same as her mom and everyone❤
Yep. Unsub
Oh no 😱😱 what ever will they do 😰😰😥😭😭
No one asked lil bud.
I have the same thing but my mom keeps on telling me to dress like a girl but I’m a tomboy and I’m confused if I am a girl or a boy. Respect to Riley
Can we not push illness on to an animated child is enough of that going around in reality I don't need to watch it on tv😑
Fr
I guess having a cold or any illness isn’t allowed then because it’s “inappropriate”.
I am not homophobic, but I’d like to point out that not EVERYTHING is about gender and LGBTQ. This movie was made some 10 years ago, and I personally believe that the main emotions that are “in control” e.g Riley’s joy, Dads anger, moms sadness, are just the emotions we’re feel more than others. I’m sure Riley’s Dad is angry with his work (as pictured a few times in the movie), Riley’s mom is sad she’s losing time with her husband (hinted more subtly) and Riley is expected to be happy.
Additionally, the film probably included both girls and boys in Riley’s head to appeal to both genders.
There’s is absolutely nothing wrong with gender confusion, but I’d like to point out the LGBTQ was practically a shadow when this was made, and therefore most likely not thought of
An 11 year old having gender dysphoria is incredibly stupid.
Change my mind.
When you're saying "change my mind" as if it's a challenge you're sort of admitting your own close-mindedness. Whatever arguments I bring up you'd be incentivized to ignore them just not to give me "a win"
@@ghurcbghurcb yeah because any argument you have is factually incorrect.
@@thatrandomredengine9430 See? I didn't make any arguments yet, but you already made up your mind. You don't care about truth.
@@ghurcbghurcb the truth that there is a significant difference between males and females?
It sounds like you’re trying to silence the truth with the devils lies.
It isn't stupid though. I knew kids who had gender dysphoria at 11. Feeling disconnected from the set of social norms placed on you isn't an 18+ only experience.
I don't think that's the reason Riley has different gender emotions (I think it's so the movie appeals to more than one demographic), but it's not an insane concept. I knew a kid who had already started going by they/them pronouns at 12ish.
They wouldn't do it to avoid getting boycotted.
Yea and also Riley is a unisex name… there are girls and boys named Riley… just like names like Jamie, Alex and Taylor
Guys, c'mon.. She's the protagonist, plus would you think that they would spend much more time just to create different designs for the same gender on different ppl who is only a background/supporting character?? When they could just go the easy route and change a few stuff from copy pasting
At that age, kids are still finding who they are. Riley, and many other girls, play sports and that used to me a male trait.
It's not beacuse of that. They wanted to make the movie more appealing to boys. Not everything is about genders
I like to think they develop and change as she ages, but they start out as the same genders as the parents she "inherited" uer emotions from. Her passion (anger) and her fear (anxiety about moving, etc.) are from her dad.
Her joy, empathy (sadness), depression (sadness), and disgust come from her mother.
My honest opinion is that the emotions are both male and female because Riley hasn’t faced puberty yet, and once she passes puberty, her emotions will all be the same gender.
No that's not it at least for me.Cuz in the second movie she's in puberty and her emotions are the same gender.I honestly think they made it like that soo both genders can enjoy the film. Also there was a guy in the film about her age and he had a crush on her but all his genders were males and it seemed like he hadn't really started puberty yet soo
The fact that he still said she at the end tho. BTW, CHILDHOOD HAS BEEN CANCELED
Ok?
Reminds me of the poet who was in a poetry class where his poem was discussed. Poet was shocked by all the hidden meanings. 🙄
Comments are so annoying, i love hearing different theories abt movies.
Fr like it's just a theory they need to calm down
There’s another huge theory ! They made her inside characters both genders because it’s Hollywood and it’s entertaining. Oh and this crazy theory that states that she’s just a teenage girl going through normal emotions.
MIND BLOWN!!!! WHAAAAAT!!!!!!
The reason the emotions are both genders is because they also wanted to appeal to boys. Most boys want other male characters in the movie besides the dad
Angry is reference to protectiveness
And sadness is Empathy
“ in contwrol ☝️” idk why I laughed 😭
Its probably about how you genuinely veiw yourself. The dad is a manly dad and has the male emotions opposite to the mom. Riley doesn't really care about that stuff and has mixed emotions, while the boy at the end has all male emotions because that kind of stigma is pushed on them from a young age, making them hyper aware.
