I've waited for this video to come out since 1972. Back story. Viren wasn't known yet in most of the world. This race was in his native land of Finland. It was his last race before the Olympics. His goal was to go all out. The distance was 2 miles. In the race was Emil Puttemans of Belgium, and Ian Stewart of Great Britain. With 2 laps to go, VIren throws in a 59.5, then runs a 55.2 (1:54.7 last 800) to finish in a NEW WORLD RECORD OF 8:14.0 This race was ahead of its time. In his book that I bought in 1973, he talked of the workout he did before this race. 20x200 avg 27.8 with 30 sec rest. Last one in 25.8. THANK YOU FOR POSTING.
@@garysmith3913 Now that you mention it, the tall fellow in the black singlet and shorts does look like Quax. And Ian Stewart's in there, too. This race must have left Stewart pretty discouraged about his prospects in Munich.
@@dashriprock3165 do do realize the shock that the body goes through in interval regiment workout but the kicker was the last 220 2 second faster than than rest shock on top of shock and one more electro shot to the brain and ALL its attachments.. LOL no wonder he could fall down get up and swift the gears OMG
This race was held in Stockholm, Sweden's capital, in Northern Europe. Finland (Mr. Viren's homeland) is Sweden's eastern neighbor. Viren won the 10,000-meter and the 5,000-meter finals at the Munich Summer Olympics only 3 and 4 weeks later, respectively (in that order). Thank you very much for posting this video+God bless you!
Wow. The Munich 10,000 was almost a duplicate of this race, just longer and with more athletes. Both came down to Lasse vs. Emil. What a treasure this video is. Thank you for uploading.
Woah.. that was the pure olimpics race.. viren shifted by saying you guys ready to play WOW Emil was right there like a gazelle against the cheetah the coach taught me that no one remembers second place.. that video/race was in vigiorating
Vau, tästäkin on siis videota. Aivan kuin sitten Münchenin kympillä. Mistä video on peräisin. Näyttää kuvatun takasuoran takaa eikä ole selostusta, ei siis peräisin TV-lähetyksestä?
Videon alkuperä on tuntematon.

I believe Dick Quax was also in this race.
This was in Stockholm, not Finland.

Taitaa tässäkin Bedford vetää niskat kyyryssä. Jänis aina löytyi, vaikkei erikseen ollut palkattukaan.
Great camera placement..lol
@@DavidGarcia-h5l Amateur footage, great job!
Numero 56 joka juoksee ekana koko alun, on kyllä raskaan näköistä.
No, hänhän on Dave Bedford😉
