I've commented on a few of your videos before -- I think you are the best Alkan interpreter alive today. I say this not out of ignorance of great performers of the obscure Parisian Jew's music; I say this because of how well you articulate the phrasing in such demanding stretches. And I say again, Le Preux!
+Bruce Lee That is disturbing indeed, but I still think Alkan is more disturbing because of what this prelude is meant to represent and because of the characteristic nature of the piano.
@@geniusrepairman1 effectivement, cette musique est la plus étrange qu'il m'a été donné d'écouter. Elle démontre la palette de sons extraordinaire de Charles Valentin Alkan
Amazing piece of music. Dark, disturbing, sad but also very empathetic and compassionate. Love the performance too.
Disturbing, gripping & romantic -- a lovely interpretation & video -- thank you so much!🙏

"obscure Parisian Jew"
That's certainly one way to avoid repetition!
Jack, I've never heard it played with such intensity!!! Amazing.
I've never understood this song on synthesia, midi file. I've stumbled upon this song when reading Jack's blog. I can feel it now...
so wonderfully evocative. A very fine portrayal of insanity - full of mystery and atmosphere.
Très belle version de cette sombre pièce, magnifiquement illustrée dans la vidéo par les tableaux de Géricault
Bravo Jack Gibbons !!!!
Riveting performance, best I've heard of it.
This piece no doubt inspired Nobuo Uematsu’s opening to Final Fantasy VI and Terra’s Theme. Brilliant!
and I thought I am the only one to notice this XD
A lot of us noticed it! :)
I knew that Terra's Theme reminded me of something. I just didn't know what. In the end, my music teacher told me (since he's a fan of FF as well)
LOL.
Also the whole j gotic company and a bunch of movie composers
My favorite performance!
Wonderful! Thank you.
The simplicity of which was beauty itself
Unparalleled interpretation.
Wonderful interpretation
A great piece!! Thanks for sharing :)
my name is
xd
Possibly the most disturbing piece of music ever conceived?
Gerbil Jim I second that....this is incredibly disturbing
+Bruce Lee That is disturbing indeed, but I still think Alkan is more disturbing because of what this prelude is meant to represent and because of the characteristic nature of the piano.
It's not too disturbing, it sounds like something from pirates of the carribean
I would say it is the most disturbing piece of piano music I have heard, at least.

I love this piece so much and your interpretation of it is great. Please tell me what is a painting at 03:58? Is it Munch?
"Mönch am Meer" von Caspar David Friedrich
Wow!!!
Very Arvo Pärt-esque. Wonder if he took any inspiration from Alkan. Lovely piece.
Tori Amos does a stunning variation on this called Shattering Sea.
Really?
oh well they didn't like him but I do. I see the beauty in this this is true.
"as in the dramatic story of his unusual death, crushed by a falling book case as he reached for a copy of the Talmud from the top shelf. "
@@Loveismygift that story was proven to be false. He died of a heart attack
The composer who got killed by a bookcase.
The commenter who spreads myths
Just a myth. Alkan obviously had a lot of books and texts, he was clearly very well-read. But he didn't die from a bookcase. He killed bookcases.
I don't why alkan used flats instead of sharps the key signature, I mean 5 is better than 7, right?
why does this say a flat minor when i look it up when the music seems to indicate g flat major
