great episode
I wish the microbes would be at least the size of humans, would make the world a whole lot better.
Wow, beautiful artwork and thanks to this channel I have some idea what I'm looking at. If I saw her art a year ago I'd think it was seeing something akin to H.R. Giger or Zdzisław Beksiński.
veryy goooOOOD video ..... and other video
Admit it, James knew exactly what he was sending those poor Nemotodes into.
Additionally, the plastic container we keep our prepared slides inside in order to prevent them from getting dried up is full of Arthrobotrys now! Apparently some spores ended up on the wet cotton and started to grow and infest our other slides! It's like a horror movie but this time I actually enjoy watching it. 👻

Jam's Germs thanks for all your great work, exposed me to a world of new learning
*Tiny microscopic screaming*
So, what eats the fungus?
I love it, more fungi/ mycelium/ mushroom content please! They are so cool.
@@pattheplanter The nematodes, apparently. At least some species will actually pull the Reverse card and eat the fungus.
Nematoads: dying
Oscillatoria: vibing
It's hilarious that I had forgotten the name of the Oscillatoria, but I still knew exactly what clip you were talking about.
Not the funnest guy, from the worm's perspective.
*Not the FUN-GI, from the worm's perspective :)
Bahdoomtsah. 😆
That’s what your mom said.
the high contrast microscope was a very good investment
I love how Oscillatoria always exists somewhere in the footage in most of your videos
I think they deliberately put them in there for a steady size comparison, but I'm not sure on that one. They're a nice way for viewers to keep track of sizes if you ever need a scale comparison.
They are some of the most abundant plants on the planet.
is that the rot green thing?
@@osmanberathamurcuyeah, the green columns.
@@Yezpahr well they are all from the same pond so could be just always there in the pond.
*Back when I was a larva, we used to sing a little nursery rhyme anytime we were undecided on a selection of something to pick. It went something like this:*
*_Eeenie, Meenie, Miney, Moe,_*
*_Catch a Nema, by it's tode._*
*_If it wriggles, let it go._*
*_Eeenie Meenie Miney, Moe._*
*Ah what this ol' Rotifer would give to experience what it's like to be a few cell cycles younger.*

Is that a Shining homage I see?
Edit: This was brutal! Loved it!
Indeed it is!

"That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons even death may die."
Indeed.
You should get an award for best use of Lovecraft in a scientific setting!
this is the first horror movie starring microbes I've seen
well it is still better than some
Wait... aren't there several with diseases in tge starring roles?
This is the sole inspiration for my "fungal siren" homebrew dungeons and dragons creature. My players will surely thank you and this wonderful kind of fungus.
So how’d it go
This needs a follow-up!
How did you not keep this one for your Halloween Horror episode?!?!?!?
It ended up way way spookier than I intended it to be when I started the editing process - Matt (producer/editor)
i doubt they run out of stuff for that tho.
Yup! We'll have a real good death episode the week of Halloween!
these are some straaaaange microbes there in the first 30 seconds!
PS: all hail our Fungal overloards!
Would that be ?Underlords?
Strange Microbes is a great ELO song.
So, instead of going fishing _with_ worms,
it goes fishing _for_ worms.
It goes worming with hyphae
I've read about this on Sheldrake's "Entangled life" just few days ago.
That's such an interesting book!
Thanks for mentioning this. I'm bout to hit the library up for it.
"A corpse that has become house to its death."
This was a really amazing video, loved it
*...become home to it's cause of death"
Yes that part😍
I've always been curious what imagery one could produce with a light field microscope. Those Lytro cameras could choose a depth of field after the fact. Which makes me wonder if one could produce an image showing a microbiome slide in complete focus, rather than rely on what the operator chooses as a focal point.
it would require multiple frames of different depth focus to compose one.this has to happen very fast to cancel any movement of the sample and those microbes move really fast. But in theory it would be amazing to accomplish it because the composed frame has depth information and could be stored as a 3d one.
@@theodorostsilikis4025 Yeah I was picturing a still image to start. Similar to those bug closeups where everything is in focus. Doing it in realtime would be a major feat for sure.
there are microfluidic devices that trap the microbes in a shallow chamber with nutrient in- and outflow. This allows them to be tracked for extended periods.
Luminescence
Omg this is actually really creepy
Coming soon from James's lab to your lung.
Worms: *"This ain't fun, guys!" :(*
after watching this, the saying "Oh NO there is a fungus among us!" is slightly less silly.

A nitpicky correction on a minor grammatical mistake that only matters to pedants like me.
Ridiculously argumentative counterpoint to your post, deliberately aimed at inflaming people with the sole intent at offending. For the algorithm.
@@dereksmalls6238 An unnecessary reply to your reply, in which I attempt unsuccessfully to conceal just how personally I took your comment.
Okay, now I've got the willies. (Looks askance at the spot of mold on the bread...)
We carry microorganisms on and in our skin that will immediately begin consuming us (like staphylococcus aureus and candida yeast) if our immune systems become compromised or at or after the point of death.
Our empathetic minds trick us into feeling bad for something that can feel neither pain nor terror.
Even knowing this, I still feel bad for the poor guy.
The fungus and nematode is almost like 2020. First few months were like:
"Hahaaa funny meme world war 3 everything going to hell hahaa! Nah everything will be fine."
*A few months later*
"Oh wow a new virus, haha everyone is gonna die, hahaa! Nah everything will STill be fine"
*Even more months later*
"I don't know how long it has been. I hear the virus still rages on. All the toilet paper has run out. Send help...."
We all get the toilet role - it's a play of bad acting - ending a maskerade..
All the 2020 threats were known in advance, things that scientists have warned about for decades (emergent zoonotic diseases global warming etc.) we as a society ignored those warning and so we face the consequences.
In analogy the lure was the calls to ignore the problem and return to business as usual, and the trap was our own folly societal laziness and inaction. Nothing 2020 threw at us was unforeseen the warning was sounded but we were oblivious and in nature the cost of being oblivious is being someone else's meal.
It amazes me how well you juggle between the different ways to say “fungi”, I’d be tripping over my words so frequently😂
I didn't even notice. I tend to randomly switch between them myself.
I love all the Journey to the Microcosmos videos, but the format of this one was so compelling! Loved it
Can you make a video on how to culture microbes. Like how to get a culture started, how to maintain them.
The fact that Hank once again makes something so great will never cease to amaze me
I get some weird resident evil 7 vibes from this
Can I just say 🙏 Andrew Huang everybody
"Today on Journey to the Microcosmos, we'll explore SCP-0.00000057...."
If a fungus ever decided “hey, I wanna exist on living creatures and devour them for energy” we are doomed. 🙏
You may enjoy the book, "The Girl With All The Gifts".
There are already fungi which devour living insects. Vertebrates are much harder to attack because they have special immune cells against parasites like fungi.
This episode was pretty metal i loved it
Your best video yet.
The Music, the drama, the theatrical voice with emotions.
This was truly a captivating video story of the Microcosm.
Excellent.
i love how James is frequently mentioned with his title "our master of microscopes"
This is one of the most important videos of all time. Thank you! As much as you can tell, if more, please do. It explains the hugest things about life in general. ❤
The fungus that controls Ant brains scares the hell out of me.
Cordyceps...
Yeah, just imagine some government research center adapting that fungus for human infection. That would probably make a good horror movie!
@@TheSoundshift yes that is it, that shit is scary.
@@r.blakehole932 A movie? They've already made a video game franchise, and then a TV series about the video game. It's called "The Last of Us".
Nematodes seem like fun guys they should get on! We just dropped a rap explaining nematodes and nematology 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Me: "what a great Halloween episode"
*notices it's not October
*realizes they might have something worse saved for that holiday.
Also me: ignores obvious 2020 jokes
Fungi are metal AF, let me tell you! You have this microscopic hunter, you have fungi that infect ants and turn them into suicidal zombies, you have fungi that can kill you if you eat them - fungi are weird, wonderful, and horrible in equal measure!
Just stop for a bit and think about it. This fungi basically thinks and traps these worms. That’s amazing when you think about it. It’s a predator!!
A similar species called Dudingtonia flagrans has been developed for use in livestock dietary supplements.
The spores are mixed in the feed, germinating in the manure and destroying the parasitic larvae in situ before they mature and climb the pasture to infect a new animal host.
A wonderful idea for a product which is still too uncommon and expensive to actually be used on a practical scale yet.
Perhaps many more species are able to be used in this way such as Arthrobotrys, we could see a big game changer in parasite control if this technology was more widely applied and affordable.
Would love it if you guys made more videos about fungi it's fascinating
Hank: It’s surprising that inert fungus could become something so unsettling
Me, a mycophobe: I TRIED TO WARN YOU
Why on earth did you watch this then?!
On contrast to cheerful Hank in SciShow, here Hank unleashes his dark side with low whispers 😂
Venus flytrap + Cordyceps = *This*
It’s too early for Halloween horrors!
A predatory fungus ... does this remind anyone else of the "Field Trip" episode of The X-Files?
David Attenborough does a fantastic little piece on this fungus in on of the Private Life of Plants episodes!
"fungi" is the plural of "fungus". Half the time you say "fungi" you actually mean "fungus".
King oyster mushrooms do this, i introduce them to the wood chip paths of gardens to help introduce the bad nemotodes to the food chain. Does wonders top the greenery and the oyster mushrooms are quite tasty.
Wow, thanks for the great video. This is brilliant content you guys are producing!
You know, maybe the fungus from Last of US doesn't seem to bad now...
Ahh, man!!! Halloween is just around the corner...hope you have something scary saved up for then
Damn! 😧😳

Friends: what do you watch?
Me: horror films under the microscope
I think my brain is torn between having nightmares and watching in facination.
“We Have Always Lived in the Castle “ is an amazing book. Thanks so much for mentioning it!
Before I started watching this chan I never would have even imagined that the microscopic world included hunters, grazers, predators and all the rest. I guess, when you get right down to it, I never really thought all that much about that world, even though I am a science-oriented person. Thanks!
Wow. Great Halloween episode. Reminds me of movies like The Thing, Annihilation, and Swamp Thing. Any chance James has recorded video of what mosquito pellets and/or discs do to larvae or other collateral organisms?
Well I'll sleep just fine tonight thanks guys!
Fans of fungal horror and all-things-mycelial will instantly fall in love with Jeff Vandermeer's (Author of the cinematically adapted "Annihilation") incredible novel, "Finch". Set within his fictional world of "Ambergris" it is a brilliant example of what can only be described as "Fungal Noir" (check it out: www.amazon.com/Finch-Jeff-VanderMeer/dp/1848874782) Note: although it is listed as the 3rd book in the "Ambergris" series, it is in fact a standalone novel (its just so happens to be the third book set within that particular universe).
p.s. huge fan of the your content! as many others, i've been following this channel diligently since its inception. There have always been a myriad of channels to satisfy my need to consumption of knowledge relating the massive and even the nanoscopic and quantum realms (astronomy, biology, quantum physics, etc.). However, there has always been a disappointing shortage in the amount of pop-science/educational content relating to the Microcosmos. Your channel alone has more than alleviated this issue with its elegant combination of beautiful footage and soothing (as well as informative!) narrations. Thank you to everyone who makes this channel possible!
I was awestruck. So fucking amazing.
Not much different than the Chordricepts fungus that zombify ants.
*Cordyceps =)

Thanks for this. I'd heard of thrash fungi back in my childhood when I spent most of my time looking in a microscope. But had never seen one until now.
Thanks again.

Some of our favorite fungus species are nematophagous fungi. I think some of the most common Pleurotus ostreatus ensnare nematodes. I would love to see more murder mushrooms on the slides
Great footage, intriguing content, and the background audio was fantastic. Loved this video.
