Very interesting comparison. The new stuff from Doty Hill is a lot greener and way more fractured then the other locale. And the other site seems to have had larger crystals too. But both seem to have lots of them and in a short amount of time, you found plenty! So both locations are worth visiting and collecting from. Thanks Jared and Sara! And of course Laika too! Lol ❤
We live just a few minutes from here. It's pronounced with a long o. We actually went to this exact place right before you posted this! It's fun watching your videos and seeing places we have been!! Just watched another one of the rock quarry up here. We also went there the same day. Unfortunately when we went there were several people there. Still fun. Just down from here you can get lots of cool agates in another rock pile! Tons of them... some good sized. Thanks for sharing your adventures!!
There's no coincidence with the two locations as they're part of the same Siletz Terrane, which stretches from @Roseburg/Coos Bay, OR. through the Oregon Coast Range, Washington Willapa Hills to Vancouver Is. BC. Wherever there was volcanic extrusive eruptions and ash flow tuff during the Miocene, there will be weathered outcrops containing augite throughout this region.
Interesting. Not the most exciting stone you ever featured, but still, interesting! Wonder what there is hidden in my stomping grounds. Common opal and basalt galore for sure, but bound to be something cool here and there. Grand Coulee area geologically blows me away, even having grown up here, and studied it for most my life.
Cool comparison! I'm surprised the crystals maintain their morphology (hexagonal columns) in spite of the separateness of the co-crystallization, i.e., you can see olivine crystals inside the augite columns. I would have expected this to just be a mess of micro-crystals. Geology works in mysterious ways!
I'm glad you liked it! I haven't looked into these augite crystals a lot, so I don't really know if there are any papers on them or if anyone has studied them or not, but I agree with you here, I wouldn't have expected the olivine to just coat it the way it did.
There are better examples of Augite up Lincoln creek valley. If you are in the Doty hills then you are on the wrong side of the ridge. The Lincoln creek formation is a pretty large area. Also it is pronounced Au-guy-t. Also in the Lincoln creek formation you can also find pillow basalt.
Looks like the road gate was open. I had called the gate owner, Blm?, and they said it's closed most the time except when requested for persons disabled needing access like hunting.

Both are good spots but if I was picking just one well, Cedar Butte it is for me!

Thanks for the tip, when we get back that way we will try to do some agate hunting as well.
I never realized there are so many more black minerals. Newbie in me showing! I learn so much from your videos. Thanks Jared!

Thank you!

A fun trip. Thanks for the good information.
Good video and info.
Thank you!

Took a quick dip into wikipedia and the pyroxenes look VERY complex, chemically and crystallographically -- you could lose yourself in there!!
Cool! Only found in volcanic tuff?
Correct!
There's nothing wrong with augite :P Great video.
Thank you!
Neat
👍🏻👍🏻
