  • Hey! Thanks for stopping by! Today I go in depth about a common source of confusion for many people, how does Mechatronics differ from Mechanical and Software Engineering and how are these disciplines the same. Let me know what you thought of the video in the comments and what I should cover next time! Don't forget to like and subscribe!

My Details of the three different paths (Summary included)
    1) Software Engineering:
    • Specialization: Creating and testing code commands, or programs (A bunch of code commands), then applying that code to any Computer-Aided device.
    • Skills:
    - Technology Design
    - Complex Problem Solving
    - Critical Thinking, and more.
    • Fun Fact: Speaks Binary, or Code. (I’m just kidding, I was making a computer joke)
    • In short: If you’re fascinated with how coding controls anything software, and only want to program, and don’t want to get your hands very dirty (not an intentional insult), go into Software Engineering. An example of what Software Engineers do is creating the “behind the scenes” of websites, apps, databases, anything that’s added to the “Cyber Realm”.
    2) Mechanical Engineering:
    • Specialization: Building mechanical systems, and/or parts used in mechanical systems, such as gears, pulleys, shafts, wheels, etc.
    • Skills:
    - Effective technical skills
    - The ability to work under pressure
    - Problem-solving skills
    - Creativity
    - Interpersonal skills
    - Verbal and written communication skills
    - Commercial awareness
    - Teamworking skills, and more.
    • Fun Fact: Every Mechanical Engineer’s fantasy is to have their arms and legs replaced with EXO arms and legs (look up Destiny EXOs for more information on them if you want), so they can feel like a cyborg (This is also a joke. It’s not fair to only tease Software Engineers, and not do the same to the others).
    • In short: If you want to work with machines, or cars (example), build machines, you like Physics and Math, and don’t want to need any programming skills or experience, or very minimal skills or experience, go into Mechanical Engineering.
    3) Mechatronics Engineering:
    • Specialization: Combining the knowledge that specific engineers such as Electrical Engineers, Electronics Engineers, Software Engineers, Mechanical Engineers use, and integrate those general concepts to design, build, test, troubleshoot, analyze, and a bunch of other steps, in industries such as mobile robotics (my favorite), factory manufacturing, and others. Although, as the UA-camr mentioned about Mechatronics Engineers having their own unique specialization that sets them apart, he’s right. Because the field of Mechatronics will gravitate more to one area than any other all the time, often gravitating for several reasons, and because it gravitates, its unique specialization requires Mechatronics Engineers to develop a more in-depth understanding of either electrical, electronics, software, or mechanical, than the other types of engineers. It depends on what the industry they choose to go into requires most.
    • Skills: Carry a bunch of skills from a bunch of different specific engineering types.
    • Fun Fact: (Here we go again), Mechatronics Engineers usually become one because they’re so indecisive that they just can’t pick a specific field (Could be true, I’m actually not sure, (but this “Fun Fact” was also just meant to be a joke).
    • In short: If you want to pursue Robotics, or be behind the wheel of Automation, but also be a Jack-of-all-Trades, and have a deeper understanding of a specific subject, go into Mechatronics Engineering.

Your videos help me a lot. I am a freshman Mechatronics Engineering student but I am thinking of switching my major to CS/Software Engineering mainly because I am not sure what Mechatronics Engineers even do and what are the future job prospects. I tried searching the web and UA-cam videos about Mechatronics from a Mechatronics Engineering student perspective but there aren't many of it. I am glad that I found your videos because they cleared up my confusion and opinion about the Mechatronics Engineering.
If you can, please do a video on Mechatronics Engineering programs in Australia. This program is offered in many Australian Universities; like UNSW, UTS, University of Sydney, University of Queensland and Monash University. They are somewhat popular between students here but not many people really understand about this major and like u said people just assume this major is the same as Mechanical Engineering major.
Thanks you for the video and please consider my request.
Keep up the good work !!!

Ive been in mechanics since i was a small child. my Grandfather kept me with him in his shop and hanger where he taught me mechanicd and fabrication building private experimental aircraft.... For the last 16yrs after making a lot of mistakes, i have been in automotive manufacturing as industrial mechanical and process engineering technician roles. I have industrial automation and mechatronics certifications and now work in the biomedical industry.. Although my experience in the industry and knowledge/skill equates to a BS engineers degree, its very difficult to break into a engineering design or controls position... therefore, I'm working on a bachelors in mechatronics (ESET) now. I will pursue the masters afterwords, however i'm so fascinated with physics and physics is the master of all education, i'm wanting to do some graduate programs in physics down the road..... anyways....I'm wondering if software engineering degree will be very useful stacked with a master? Software engineering is so extremely useful and as diverse in some ways as mechatronics but with its unique specialty is more in depth i would think. Any advice ? Personally i like to be able to manipulate my entire environment and be the master of my craft with the objective at hand... my thoughts is mechatronics without software engineering isn't 100% a master of the trade, just as you mentioned a mechatronics and mechanical engineer working together, in the industry, its actually usually an automation technician (like myself) working with an electrical engineer due to their lack of mechanical comprehension or experience... any thought or suggestions on if a mechatronics engineer should in fact pursue in depth software engineering as well? in today's advanced manufacturing technologies, even Information Technologist are integrated into machine building projects as a second entity due to the extreme amount networking/data engineering that is required... Seems like a double degreed mechatronics/software engineer would be the master answer to bridging this skills gap, a two for one so to say, of course at a higher salary.. what are your thoughts? Also, what are your thoughts on a Mehatronics Engineering degree with Machine learning and Data Science/coding /AI type certifications?

Depends what you want to do, if you want to sit at a computer for most of your career debugging code, then software. It can also be cool and you can build cool things with a software degree, and it's a very safe choice. If you want to sit at your computer, but also work with electronics and cables and engineering design then go Mechatronics. Mechatronics is less specialized so it might be harder to find a job in one particular field than software. So consider that too.
