Idle gossip is not good. However, if you hear something bad about someone it can be a warning. Either, about the person passing the word around or about the person spoken about. For instance, if you hear that someone has stolen money and you know your friend is going to invest with that person, or a babysitter is abusive, or any number of things,then you'd be a jerk not to mention it. Diabolical!
I think the intent is key. Are you sharing news of the person to help someone else or because you want to bring the person down... I used to think that it was easy to know if we're in the latter case so we can control our actions but I'm reminded of verse that says how our heart is so deceiving and how God can know our motives best. The more we're in tune with God, the more we have discernment of truth on ourselves and outside of us
