- Home to the darkest and cleanest skies in the world, the Atacama Desert offers views to the nightsky like no other. 2 years after the very successful first video "Nox Atacama" we return to this magnificent region and get rewarded with uncountable numbers of stars and fantastic nebulae in one of the most quiet a empty places on earth. Not a single noise distracts from the grand show the nightsky has to offer.
Filmed over a month in Mar/April 2019, I worked in freezing temperatures, altitudes up to 5200m/17000ft, salt lakes and icy slopes. The Atacama is not welcoming to life and equipment. The lack of oxygen makes it tough to get anything done in these high altitudes. But it provides without doubt for epic and vast vistas of one of the greatest landscapes on earth.

Being able to see the night sky this way is a luxury that many of us don't have, living in cities with all the light pollution. I was lucky, though, to witness views like these back in the late 80's (specifically the summers of 87 and 88) during my compulsory military service. Boot camp was in the middle of nowhere in the northern Iraqi Nineveh Governorate, where clear summer night skies are common. During lights out after 11 PM (when the whole camp is fully dark save for a small light far away at the main gate), the drill instructors allowed us sometimes to carry our beds outside the barracks and sleep under the stars. There is nothing quite like it. We could actually make out the constellations and other heavenly bodies and name them. We wanted to stay up all night, but the sheer beauty of it fills you with so much peace you end up sleeping like a baby.

I randomly bumped into this video. The time lapses are simply brilliant, specially those day-to-night with the galactic core emerging in the horizon, and afterwards the moon lightning the whole scene.
