    My D74 is a BATTERY EATER !!! If the D75 has improvement on the battery discharge rate, I will consider it.

    Wish list that I wish they would have included: SSB transmit, full duplex, better bluetooth, maybe wifi? Honestly - at this time its not that much of an upgrade from a D74 to buy this, especially since they are probably going to be $800 out of the gate. I own 2 D74's because I love them so much!

      Yeah, therehasn't been a SSB portable since the old Icom 202 and 402 days! 3 watt "bookshelf" portables... range on SSB is so much better than FM! Especially with a horizontal antenna. I used to have a 2m loop antenna at about 30 feet and 100 mile contacts were easy with stations running a medium (20' boom) yagi. Now I run 4 M2 2m12 20' long yagis and can hear my moon echoes with 750 watts! And can hear a beacon running 10 watts to 2 stacked loops that is 351 miles away 90+% of the time...
      It would boost use of the low end of the bands... Where I am there are about 10 stations on every day on 2m SSB... more activity would be nice.
      And pick up a mic people! FT8 is BORING

    74 was out of production so i will catch the 75 this time, yes it could have even more features but from what i see around it keeps the best choice even if it costs a bit more, i own 2 thd72, ft2d and ft3d, this one will join the setup. tnx for your video and keep on the good work. 73's

    I own the 74, as well as the Icom 52 and Yaesu's FT5D. IMHO, the 74 is the best SHTF radio. DSTAR for a bit more privacy, APRS for location tracking (you don't need to use 144.39, btw), ham and commercial bands, and the built-in TNC for WinLink email comms. I'll be getting the 75 as a backup.

    I have a D74 and won't be buying a D75 at launch based upon what we know about it today. I will be glad that I could replace my D74 with a D75 in the event it breaks or is lost. I expect the D75 will also become the best HT available as the D74 once was. We said it then and we should say this to Kenwood now, take the features of the D75 and make a mobile version with more watts!

    If Kenwood is clever then they add a waterfall display to the TH-D75! BTW: This is why I bought an ICOM ID-52. Waterfall spectrum is the new standard since ICOM did it! Together with the great feature set of the TH-D75 this would really be a real game changer.

    • @K6UDA
      @K6UDA  Рік тому +1

      I like the idea, but I almost never use the spectrum display on my ID52 or the FT5. Yaesu's active monitor system seems to be a little more useful to me. Probably because I'm pretty much parked on repeaters.

    • @DL2SDR
      @DL2SDR Рік тому +3

      @@K6UDA That's ok. The waterfall should of course be switchable. So you can choose between a battery safe mode and a more power consuming waterfall mode. Then everybody will be super happy!

    So cool that Kenwood is reviving, and updating, this awesome radio. I've never really warmed up to the Yaesu FT-5, I just don't like its interface.

    I got the Th-74 soon after it’s released and love that radio. After 6 years of hard regular use it has started showing it’s age. The battery barely holds a charge anymore. So I am very eagerly awaiting the 75. If anything as a replacement to my 74 that has served me well. Anything updated or new about it will just be a bonus.

    • @1polonium210
      @1polonium210 Рік тому +2

      My ONE complaint about the TH-D74 is the battery life. I've stocked up on batteries, and they are expensive!! I hope that Kenwood improves that problem in the D75 ... if there really is a D75.

  • @Josh-KJ7OEP
    @Josh-KJ7OEP Рік тому +2

    Hopefully You have recourse against the contractor. Love the D74. Your video was a large part of the reason I big purchased for my first HT. I don't waste it's features either. I use the KISS TNC, use 220 with another local (that's picking up since the AT578 has 220), I make use of the APRS and link that to the computer. The upgrade will be worth it. My wife just got her ticket. She said she has no issue with the hand me down. I've been nursing mine ever since the price sky rocketed after the discontinuation. Now I know there is an upgrade, replacement I'm all for it and back to daily driving my D74.

    If i had the 74, i dont think id buy the 75 unless it was a daily driver.
    Being a retired electrician, the guy who done that install should be shot. Easiy could've killed someone being that shallow. Aluminium sucks, never used it as its illegal in buildings of any kind here. Not sure if the council used it in backbone infrastructure HV work though. That must have cost a bit to replace. Your gear may have fried with the voltage spike. If youre lucky, maybe just some dry capacitors as they can can fail anytime you turn off power normally if left on for years, very common. :)

Now the agony of the wait. Sold my Yeasu FT 3, 5 and 300. I have an Id 52 that I think is great, a Icom T10. Oh and a new Wouxon KH Q10H. And for the price point it is a very nice radio.

    Thanks, Bob. I'm just starting to get interested in APRS and satellites, so I was excited to hear about the new D75. I was disappointed when I heard it wouldn't be full duplex, but there are some cool features on it. We'll see how much it is when it comes out. But competition is good and hopefully it keeps Yaesu and ICOM on their toes.

    The Yeasu/Vertx handhelds are also wide-banded. Ham bands and shortwave.

    • @K6UDA
      @K6UDA  Рік тому +4

      But not LSB USB CW modes.

    • @TWebsterification
      @TWebsterification Рік тому +2

      @K6UDA yes, it lacks an SSB (upper or lower) filter and VFO offset for those modes or a narrow CW filter. It's a fiddly PIA, but can be done. SSB is more or less "half of AM" without a carrier. So set squelch off and tune around. On busy bands maybe a problem picking out the signal you are looking for. The Kenwood definitely has the "easy button(s)" in this case.

    I just received my D75 today. I'm excited to get this HT running. I don't know much about Kenwood programming so this will be something new to me. This is great as it puts out a full 5 watts, or better on 220 band and we recently got two new D-Star repeaters. RT sytems is developing a programming software so, more fun coming my way. When you figure everything that is packed into the 74, and if you make proper use of the radio, it's worth every penny. The sensitivity, the selectivity, the clarity......APRS, WinLink through bluetooth on my phone and the radio....GPS can be piped into my computer, I love it.

    So only receive SSB/CW? Pity, a good SSB portable would be sweet! I remember Matt KA0PQW out in SD on the watch tower on Buffalo Ridge working 500 miles with his Icom IC-202 bookshelf 3 watt portable held sideways for horizontal polarization! SSB on 2m and a horizontal antenna gives much greater range than FM! My system test of my 2m SSB receive from my QTH in EN24 SW MN is a 10 watt beacon running 2 loop antennas in EN53 WI 351 miles from me! It is audible 90% of the time. Granted I run more than the average antenna but a single 12 element yagi is easily capable of 150 mile contacts to other single yagi stations.
    Same applies to 222 and 432! 222.1 SSB gets used! 432.1 also. Especially during band openings!

    The TH-D75 still has just Audio Out (via USB). No Audio In. I would expect Audio In and Out and CAT commands via USB for SSTV, Digital Modes, ... . Since they introduced the D74 more than 6 years have passed. Why can't I get rid of the feeling that they sell the same hardware (with only a few improvements) again? In 6 years they could have implemented a waterfall display like the ID-52 can do. Currently only the Icom IC-705 provides everything I want to do. And yes, it has shortwave and SSB-TX!
