Best explanation of Egil Skallagrimson i've ever heard "Egil was kind of a jackass, and he has a tremendously successful life."

Yes he was, he was a rude brute in my view. (and I say that even though I "know"/was told by my uncle who has researched the history and written books about him and others from that period, that I am of the "33 leg"/33 generation from Egill. But even he was known for having his reputation and apparently was a drunkard and a man of violence, I still think he was a great poet and a thinker, and maybe man of good intentions after all (holding the honor of his family higher than everything).
But I agree with your opinion also, Jackson puts the description in a very good way :)

Egil's is heavy. I've read it, studied it and reread it. Some of my relatives are mentioned in it. I was moved, liked how Egil matured over his years, and came to have love for the guy. Even if he was cross ways with my family in Iceland. Skál

Bought Sagas of the Icelanders at a library sale last year for about a dollar. Definitely ripped someone off on that deal.

You have made me more interested in these sagas than any of my teachers. Although I have not read Egill's saga I checked my family tree and found out that I'm an direct descendant of him

Hi Jackson, do you know where i can get info and images about the binding type of the icelandic sagas? All I've found is a picture of them which does not show the binding. Any help or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. I'm not even sure where any are kept and can't even email any museums or anything asking for info either. Regards, Kirk.

Speaking of Njáls saga, I once heard a theory that Gunnar á Hlíðarenda and his close friend Njáll Þorgeirsson were maybe really close, like they-were-in-a-sexual-relationship kind of close. Yeah ... back in the good ol' days when men were men.
'Maður er manns gaman' like it says in in the 47th stanza of Hávamál :)

I don't know what kind of attitutes my pre-christian Icelandic ancestors had towards homosexuality, but it's not unlikely that the christian medieval icelanders, who actually wrote down the sagas, had negative attitudes towards homosexuality. So it's not inconceivable that they might have downplayed this aspect of Gunnar's and Njáll's relationship when they recorded said sagas.

      I don't really know.
It's just a theory I remember hearing in high school when I was reading Njáls saga and I found it to be interesting.
I've read Njáls saga, Gísla saga and Egils saga but I'm certainly no expert in the sagas.

You have such theories for basically every story ever written. It's a stream in academic criticism.
