Hey, Bill Wurts uploaded a new song, “Where I’ve been” so if you have the time I’d love to see you dig through it. I’ve been listening to it for almost every day for weeks now.
I loved the Disney cartoon theme intros... Darkwing Duck, New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers... I'd love to see his take on them
I believe Ziggy Marley -- Bob Marley's son -- sings this theme song! Was always one of my favorite shows as a kid. Had so much unexpected humor, while also taking on some pretty heavy subjects.
As a Caribbean kid, growing up listening to reggae, ska, calypso, soca etc, I loved this theme song. Now, it reminds me of my grandma because I use to watch this at her house a lot
I'm glad I wasn't the only one that didn't put the two together that the Arthur theme song was not just a reggae song, but one done by a son of Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley when I grew up watching the show. Maybe because the theme song so easily sucked me into the show as the beat dropped harder than the Greek economy. The Caribbean is a region blessed with incredible music from Afro-Cuban jazz to Merengue and reggae. When the wildlife like the Cyclura rock iguanas are as chill as the people, that's when you know the Caribbean is the place to be
@@toriibarlow, well no, it was *performed* by Ziggy Marley, but written by Québecois fusion guitarist/composer Jerry de Villiers Jr. and producer Judy Henderson. (Jerry, btw, is one of the hidden gems of '90s fusion. You can find his own work as a performer on UA-cam, but not a whole lot of other places.)
I love this channel. I still am completely a noob at understanding music, but Charles' energy, enthusiasm, and passion for music is so unapologetically and positively infectious. It brings me joy just to watch him geek out over something he loves!
Oh man, the 90s nostalgia. Somehow my early 2000s 8th-grade class made this our theme song. We’d been together the majority of 8 years and were now looking at splitting up to go to different high schools, and walking around campus singing the “Arthur” theme song together somehow put an affirmative punctuation on our good memories and made the future feel more manageable.
Another problem is growing up TV's don't have bass so lots of subtleties are missed. I've never actually heared the song on my speakers and wow it's great, even though I watched Arthur everyday. Hey Arnold is another one that caught me off.
Yeah, listening with deep headphones, within the first few seconds of hearing the song I was like where has this amazing bassline been my whole childhood?
Not sure if you check the comments, but, when you’re listening and playing along - in terms of the actual video - is it being done live? How much practice is done between edits in your video? Or is it all purely off the cuff? I’m so blown away with how natural and at ease you look when playing. (Obviously that so years of practice, but still). Cheers!
I'm not quite as good as Charles, because I don't have as much knowledge of like jazz extensions and stuff, but for the most part I can pick up a stringed instrument and immediately start live playing along with most music. Once you are familiar with your instrument and have a sense for intervals and the common progressions you can just kind of feel where things are going. If the music is too complex I may not be able to get it exactly, but I can at least follow the chord structure or the melody enough to play something that will sound good.
He’ll edit down to get rid of stuff that breaks flow but mostly you’re seeing it at about the speed he’s doing it. This is the difference between learning music properly and just learning individual songs. When you learn music properly you learn scales, modes and intervals which are all really boring but, once you internalise them, they allow you to play by ear. A lot of the time, especially in shorts, he’ll leave in stupid little mistakes because they’re funny, like flubbing a C major scale
He's so used to it that it's similar to someone typing - when you type you don't think about where your fingers are going, you just know what word you want to type and your fingers do it automatically. (That's why he mentioned that his fingers instinctively wanted to play more complex chords than the ones in the actual song.)
This is probably one of my favorite videos from you since I don't really understand the theory. Having you just jamming out and showing another version of the song to show how it can be changed was really cool
In the bridge, I hear: F C Dm Bb C, back to F. The “ooh” vocals emphasize that transition to the 6m with the high note changing from a C to a D, an octave above the melody.
Fun and interesting analysis as always. Like you said, it's crazy that a hugely popular children's show like Arthur had a full-on reggae opening and nobody ever really commented on it! If I could be so bold as to suggest a future topic, I'd LOVE to see you discuss Kow Otani's illustrious work on SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS, and maybe squeeze in some of his music from the 90s Gamera trilogy as well. If anything, as a piano guy, you should be enthralled by the final credits theme from SotC.
I play piano for my church and I’ve been doing it for the past 11 years and hearing some else play the keys is just soothing! Love your videos Charles! 🙌🏾
I really enjoyed the video, but...we never actually got to what makes the Arthur theme reggae, which my "I haven't heard this song in 15 years, what do you mean it isn't its own entity??" brain is still struggling to understand 😂
I think ima just starting asking Charles to check out the main theme from yu-gi-oh. That shit has some low key killer harmony, awesome orchestration, the bass lick is iconic, and the instrumentation sounds so exotic
For clarity's sake, you mean the Yu-Gi-Oh! English OP (referred to as Yugioh DM). There's, like, at least twenty more yugioh themes. But yeah, for all the sins the dub has, it's got great music throughout. Kaiba hacking theme is still a personal favorite.
This is literally where I fell in love with Reggae...sure, maybe I didn't know that's what it was...but I loved Reggae/Funk as a kid more than any other kid my age...and this was the reason why. When I would sing this song as a kid, I would sing that Reggae influence even stronger, and usually in a really bad Jamaican accent, just because that was the only other influence that was associated with Reggae. But this song was a huge formation of my love for Reggae/Funk as a kid.
My dad was always a huge music history enthusiast when I was a kid and loved to talk with me about the strong influence of the Black community on American music. From a young age he exposed me to blues, jazz, reggae, and R&B that he loved. I remember him getting so excited when he realized this was Ziggy Marley! He still likes to talk about how much he loves the cartoons I grew up with and mention Arthur haha.
I feel like I would be a different person if I didn’t watch any Arthur as a kid. Arthur literally helped me make friends as a kid and helped me be who I am today. Arthur is a must-watch. Even adults can take away valuable life lessons from this show!😍
Can we just talk about when DW laughs at the beginning of the main theme?.... Her laugh can be easily transcribe into a rhythmic pattern, listen to how syncopated her laugh is on the off beat. Triplets maybe? I'm not too sure with out listening and sitting at my piano and figuring out the rhythm!!
Holy shit man how did I never hear Chance's recording of this before??? At this point I'd even love to hear you do a recording of it using some of the ideas you explored at about 15:12
Have you covered the theme song to Chip 'N Dale's Rescue Rangers yet? I love how it starts in a somber minor key which sets the mood and then explodes into the major key. 'We Three Kings (of Orient Are)' also behaves in the same manner.
The backing music from Arthur was phenomenal too. There's one sad piano theme in E flat major that manages to just be heartbreaking. Ray Fabi's band did a fantastic job with it.
This is pretty niche, but Pajama Sam and other Humongous Entertainment games actually have some pretty neat soundtracks to them. Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside specifically has a lot of bossa nova and jazz fusion scattered throughout.
My daughter use to watch that all the time and when I first heard the theme song, it made me stop and listen. And not only because it was reggae but the hook was strong.
This is dope. You should do a video on “Angela” the theme song from the tv show Taxi as well. Tried figuring out on piano and took a bit due to how harmonically complex it is.
As the theme song states, believe in yourself, comrades. Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy. Always remember to never give up. No obstacle can stop you, unless you don't try.
I mean… of course it’s reggae! Weirdly I intuitively knew that as a kid, but I didn’t remember that in retrospect. Prompted by the title of your video my hazy memory of the song was like “it was just like a kinda happy hip hop tune wasn’t it?” Also, do remember the sort of cascading sound of “believe in yourself” being intoxicatingly beautiful
@Charles Cornell As a child that watched every episode of Arthur in the 90s and Magic Schoolbus on a fuzzy PBS channel, I always loved this theme. So fun and has a great message. Now, as a bass player of 25 years, I am hearing a minor 6 chord in the bridge. Even the harmonies suggest this movement. The bass barely hits a D. Do you agree? I V vi IV I V7sus4 And now, back to Arthur!
yoooo!! the whole first section i was like "i gotta go listen to the Chance the Rapper version after this" and then you pulled it out yourself. Absolute madman.
Shouts out to the piccolo snares it opens with, for being able to tell me from three rooms away that I needed to rush back to the living room because Arthur was starting.
I play the keyboard as well.. I like how you explain the chord progressions.. I've often done the same when i play and show friends... Some songs sometimes sound so complex and it ends up being c f g.. Or something easy like that!!
Lol for my comp & arranging class in school I did rhythm changes over the Arthur theme song. such an amazing bop. So glad you referenced Chance's work here too :) amazing work as always, Charles :D
It baffled me that someone could not realize that the theme is reggae until I remembered that the only reason I probably picked up on it as a kid was because I was used to hearing reggae already since I’m half-Jamaican 😅
This reminded me a lot of Joel Ross, you should definitely look at some of his work in a video some day. “After the Rain” and “Prayer” both masterpieces. 🙏🏻
Hey Charles! I'm sure you get tons of suggestions but I'd love to see what you think about an artist called Cody Fry. He does some really interesting sounding music, the song 'Underground' in particular. Also if you haven't heard the song Guns for Hire, its a super musically interesting and unusual song as well. Love your videos!
One thing that might be cool as an addition to your videos, when you're discussing chromatic notes, maybe have them display in red on the keyboard overlay (bottom of screen) as you play. I'm a guitarist, so don't necessarily think in the same way a keyboardist would. As ever, love your content. :)
Yesss, when I saw the title I was hoping it was going to be him gushing about wonderful everyday. Legit one of the best reinterpretations I've heard from the last few years.
Please listen to the Master of Masters Theme from Kingdom Hearts. The theme of the track and the character together just screams "planned insanity" and I would love to see your take on the piece.
They should've made a piano instrumental version of the theme song for a few episodes or even the final episode after choosing to end it cause the theme on piano sounds beautiful.
Hi Charles. Any chance you can move that virtual keyboard elsewhere please. Maybe even too the top. It's hellava confusing having you play a visual. Mirror image of what Im hearing. Maybe your actual keyboard can be at the bottom and the virtual keyboard floating right at the top.
The theme song to Arthur is why I continued to watch Arthur even as a grown-ass adult. Such a great program, and such a shame it came to an end after 25 years.
Arthur’s theme song was always one of my favourite growing up. I didn’t know what it was, was called reggae. However, I always recognized how different it sounded to other theme songs. One day when I randomly searched it up, I had a good laugh at the realization that it was indeed reggae!
Not just any reggae either since it's a song by Ziggy Marley, one of the kids of Bob Marley. Ziggy's still one of the leading names in the genre even among the many other Marleys also performing; so are Julian and Ky-Mani, they're also pretty active.

Please listen to the Master of Masters Theme from Kingdom Hearts. The theme of the track and the character together just screams "planned insanity" and I would love to see your take on the piece.
11:52 that A dominant chord hit different.
Hotel California is basically reggae too. As a kid, I always wondered how it became a ”classic rock” song
They should've made a piano instrumental version of the theme song for a few episodes or even the final episode after choosing to end it cause the theme on piano sounds beautiful.
ONE OF THE GREATEST INTRO SONG TO A SHOW EVER!!!!!!!
lol I woke up with this song in my head, and then you post this... Was literally humming it at work thinking about that bass line
Hey it is interesting that you could hear the lyrics of the song with just the melody itself
Holy Shit! I wasn't expecting you to bring Chance's version into your video. I'm so happy! It's my favourite version of the intro
I’ve always wanted to hear how it sounds on an Hammond organ
Hi Charles. Any chance you can move that virtual keyboard elsewhere please. Maybe even too the top. It's hellava confusing having you play a visual. Mirror image of what Im hearing. Maybe your actual keyboard can be at the bottom and the virtual keyboard floating right at the top.
The quality of these videos is insane
The theme song to Arthur is why I continued to watch Arthur even as a grown-ass adult. Such a great program, and such a shame it came to an end after 25 years.
This breakdown made me happy ❤
Great video! I know Adam Nealy did a video on "Castaways" but i would love to see your take on it :)
I clicked thinking that you were going to talk about Christopher Cross's song Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do) 😆😆
Im glad someone finally talks about this! ive always been impressed by arthurs theme
The CyberChase theme song lowkey slaps! Do that next.
