Even though I live down South now. These mountains are a part of who I am. I grew up not far from Hill Creek and remember the high wall mining job there. I think the red Pete is topping out on Shorts gap when passing the other truck. You don't have a clue how much I enjoyed going home watching this video. I know every curve from Big Rock to Hill Creek. That's a long coal haul. Wow, 155 thousand!
It's where I grew up, and i'll always love Big Rock and even though it was hard living, we never knew it. My family had to move to Manassas Va so Daddy could find work when the mines went on strike. This was in the early sixties. I wrote a song years back about it.
My father( Ralph Ratliff had a coal mine there back in the 60,s where i came from. ( & Harmon va.!! Loved that place and brownsville store.our old hone was burned diwn there across from toy lesters..!
I know they have cut the weight to legal now. When i hauled in KY back in the 90's, our average was around 160,00 to 170,000. I hauled in alot of places over the years but ran quite a lot "down the river". Heaviest jag i ever had was 205,000.
I enjoyed the ride I hauled coal for 30 years hauled in ky Perry letcher clay breathett Leslie. Loved it thanks.brang back a lot of good memories.
