  • We travelled down Iron Mountain Road to Custer State Park and saw over 1400 bison (or buffalo as we call them)! Every year, Custer State Park does the Buffalo Roundup, near Wildlife Loop Road, and we happened to be there days before the roundup started! This meant that instead of having the buffalo scattered throughout the entire park, they were all gathered in one area, which made for great viewing! We also saw donkeys (or burros), pronghorn sheep and a few mountain goats, but missed the bighorn sheep while we were there! After visiting Custer, we headed to The Needles Highway, where we attempted to go through a narrow tunnel that has a clearance of 8'4"! You'll have to watch to see if our Ford F350 Dually made it through or not!

    Very cool....I am hoping all of these skinny tunnels are not on the "normal" road people use to get to the park or to RV sites. I have a little Chevy Spark as my tow car so exploring in it will be OK, but I hope my DP Class A will never be in danger when I try to get to RV sites.

      These roads are not the road you would use to get to any RV park, and there are alternate ways in to Custer State Park. This is just the most scenic ways to get in and out!

    Wow, some beautiful scenery. It looks like the girls really enjoyed the visitor center.

    The sign at 3:55 is not accurate, the French used the word buffle for the old world buffalo before the 1600s. The word buffalo comes from Latin and was in the English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian language centuries before the 1600s. The American bison looks like the european bison they were called buffalo before the 1600s. The term bison is the new term for scientific labeling. Sad the parks division is trying to rewrite history. Beautiful place to go, just cannot always trust the signage.

    Thanks for the tour I am going to put that park on my list although my rig won’t fit through any of those tunnels! Going to have to drive the jeep through! Thomyt

      You would be fine just go slow! Plus it's a long drive out if you have to backtrack!

    On duallies. Typically if the mirrors fit. The "hips" fit. Theres an airport nesr me my mirrors do not fit, but my tail end goes through fine.

      The park ranger said we should fit, but leave your mirrors out so you know before the hips get there!

    I live in Rapid City and have traveled through sever times with an RV. Good advice to always know the height and width. The other is to use your mirrors. Use you driver side mirror a stout guide if you know it’s the widest length which mine is.

    Great driving tour of Custer State Park. I figured that your truck would be fine. We were there in June, and no issue. Thank you for sharing. Peace and Safe Travels.

    I'm sure you're glad you didn't have to go back through the tunnel. Lol.
    Please tell me, are your mirrors wider or the dually fender wells?

    • @PavingNewPaths
      @PavingNewPaths  2 роки тому +3

      The mirrors are the widest point. The park ranger said leave the mirrors out to see your spacing so you don't mess a fender up.

      @@djinncat No problem just go slow. If I was not a dually I would have folded the mirrors in.

      It is tight but doable if you take your time! I'm glad it worked out because the sun was going down and it was a long way to back track out the other way!

    I'm a tour bus driver that has gone through there, but you can't do it in the new busses since they are 102" wide. It's fun watching us go though there in a 96" bus!

    • @PavingNewPaths
      @PavingNewPaths  2 роки тому

      We saw pictures of buses but i was unsure how the big ones made it!

      @ewelmo3921 2 роки тому

      @@PavingNewPaths The simple answer is they don't! Or at least they don't if they don't want to get stuck! In Custer, SD they had a coach company that had the older 96" coaches, they used to be based out of the "Dances with Wolves" location. It's been a decade since I met the owner (a very nice guy), and I can't remember the name of the company. Those are the busses you probably saw in pictures. They were famous for doing that. You do have to hit that tunnel just right, if you don't.....

    So you are one of those people causing the traffic jam.......way to go. How selfish

    • @PavingNewPaths
      @PavingNewPaths  Рік тому +1

      Which is why we waited until the end of the day, no one waited on us, we also took the same amount of time as all the other vehicles to pass through the tunnel! There was so little traffic at this time, that we along with everyone else that was there, were able to walk the tunnel taking pictures without a single car coming through for 20-30 minutes! You seem like one of those people that comment on UA-cam how you think everyone should do things! Thats pretty selfish of you!
