@@michunel7022 that’s just a bad argument who cares if his music is super popular when considering who’s a better bassist like are you saying that gene simons is better than jacko?
Victor’s more funk, but Flea’s pretty great in his own way. Just to address people hating on Flea in this comment section, Flea opened up what it meant to be a bass player to a lot of people when-back then-bass in rock music, was often kinda boring, not very adventurous bass lines. He definitely got me and some people of that era, thinking about bass differently, picking up bass magazines, learning about musicians like Jaco, Marcus, and all the crazy good funk, jazz fusion artists, straight jazz artists, RNB, Gospel, classic rock, etc. Virtuoso musicians were kinda niche to a lot of people; they weren’t on MTV or on the radio. Mostly, only other musicians knew bass heroes. Flea as a musician, is an integral part of a band dynamic, and they leave room for each other, and no they’re not Chick Corea Electric Band, and I get that some people don’t like RHCP, but not every band is the same. Speaking of boring root-note bass lines, U2’s _With or Without You_ bass line is frigging great! There isn’t a rule. Be moved by what moves you.
Very well said. Flea was the 'gateway drug' for many people (myself included) to discover other great bass players. Flea was where I first heard of Larry Graham and Louis Johnson. Music is subjective! People have their own voice and style. Victor himself said essentially this (I'm paraphrasing) : Don't try to be me, there's only one job like that in the world, and I've got it. Try to be the best YOU. Discover your own voice on bass.
There's the useless argument of technical prowess, which in this case, is obvious, but in the end who's music do you most listen to most? Song writing is every bit as, if not more important than technical prowess. I'd personally rather listen to a great song versus something that is mechanically impressive. This is one of those stupid questions to gain internet traffic. Each to his own.
Just seems that way because RHCP are waaaaay more mainstream and out there than Victor. They're one of the most well known rock bands ever basically. So of course that's true.
He's my favorite bassist. I wouldn't say he was the greatest though. Easily top 3 IMO though. I love a ton of his work. Got to see Primus live too. Can't wait to see him or Primus live again.
there are many "bosses". marcus miller, chris wood, russel hall, stanley clarke, christian mcbride, larry grenadier, ... the list could be very long.@@uiliamoliveira6348
Marcus Miller might have something to say about that. Your point is well taken though. Besides, at the Victor/Marcus level, does it even matter? They're legends!
Main thing that people underestimate when it comes to grove is tempo, at faster tempos it can be harder to hear the nuances and the "in the pocket" feel and at the right tempo (slower rather than faster) it automatically sounds groovier and funkier
Not that Flea isn’t funky as all hell, but Victor embodies funk. Flea (as part of RHCP) has always been more about bringing funk conventions into alt/rock music. Victor Wooten is a top 3 funkiest man alive
Flea's style is a punk approach to a funk technique. Not quite cutting corners, more like cutting to the chase to get the sound out, not being too fussy about it, just get the sound out however you can get your hands to do it. It's straight up punk bass, but playing funk lines.
i honestly believe if you arent a bassist you simply just can't enjoy victor wooten, im saying this as a bassist myself. but flea is pretty easy to enjoy even for non bassist and i really take that fact into consideration while considering if theyre the best bassist or even a good one.
Nah, Im a guitarist and I enjoy Victor's wooten playing much more. It much more melodic and musical..Flea's playing is more about style than substance to me.
Youd be wrong then, im a guitarist and im a fan and was blown away by him the first time i ever saw him play about 21 years ago. Guitar and bass are more similar than not, its not like a competent guitarist cant comprehend what bassists are doing or recognise a skilled musician. The biggest difference in how bassists play and guitarists play is in the picking hand. The rest of the fretboard, notes, scales, chords is the same.
I am a bassist and I don't think Victor is funky at all. I don't like his tone, he overplays, it's all ego wanting attention. Funky is in the pocket for the pocket
Flea did amazing things for funk in the 90's. Victor was better but more of a musician's musician. But Flea opened alot of kids up to the bass due to massive success the Chili Peppers had gained after Blood Sex Sugar Magik. Victor still wins hands down.
Victor got more funk and slap technique. Flea is just much more creative and crazy with with slap lines. Flea is much better when it comes to creativity and being the best at what he does. Victor is more skilled and smooth. Both amazing at bass slap. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼. Over all I grew up with Flea being my overall favorite. So Flea is my goat.
Not even on the same level. I love flea. Its actually insulting to Vic Wooten to put flea in the same category. Flea is not on the same overall skill level. It's like comparing the Bass Drum vs the Snare on the Drums. Which has more funk bass drum or snare. Which the pop mimics the snare. Low notes drive and High notes accent
I can listen to flea for weeks on end but cant get through a Wooten album. With that said, i would have to say Vic is the more polished bassist - but maybe lacks the artistic edge that flea brings.
