    Great video. I'm from Adelaide Australia where these cars were made for export. Yes it based on our Holden Commodore but this format was also call a Caprice or Statesman depending on the model. The Commodore was the base models which look like the G8 models. Holden closed due to the parent company GM America pulling the plug putting 3000 Australians out of work just at 1 factory. Australia no longer has a motor industry due to the lack of support from the Australian government . Holden opened in 1948 and was Australia's top selling brand for over half its life competing against Australian made Fords, Toyotas, Mitsubishi, and Nissan with other companies for short periods. Australia did for many years export cars to many countries and also to parent companies countries like America, Japan and Germany. It is a shame we no long build cars in Australia.

      Thank the then PM Abbott and his Treasurer Hockey for daring Holden, Ford and Toyota to leave. They had no interest in sustaining an Australian motor industry and supporting hard working Australians.

    I have been oppressed with these PPV's for the last two weeks but they don't have much of a selection here in SoCal. I did Find a large inventory at a place in Illinois called Asia Motors. Great prices and communication, they even sent me pics under the car. (there's a bit of rust). I'm Not sure which 9C model it is but it almost has full interior and only 24k miles. I was thinking of flying out there and driving it back. 30 hour trip, you tell me. Is this car worth it?

    This was very helpful and informative. How has the Caprice performed since you purchased it and how expensive is it to maintain? Thanks!

      Hey, thanks for checking out my auction results video on the Caprice PPV. I did that video as a way of tracking auction prices so I would know when a car with good value pops up . On my Caprice, I had two mechanical problems; one was a wobble in the crankshaft pulley. The pulley was replaced which fixed the problem. The second is a ticking sound from the cam lifters. Both of those issues are common to these cars and the mechanical parts for the repair are easy to get. The pulley takes 1-2 hours but the cam lifters is way more involved and big bucks. The real issue with these cars is cosmetic parts like headlights, fenders, hoods, interior parts.... Those are very expensive and because only 16K of these cars were imported from AUS, there isn't many in junk yards.

  • @a200tq1
    @a200tq1 5 років тому +1

    Hi guys! To be honest, i don't understand why these cars are so valuable. Almost no spare parts no repair shops no repair manuals for this. And for 7-9k we have a big selection of powerful RWD cars-BMW, Merc, Dodge, Chrysler. CVPI is a way more interesting-last body on frame, last America`s full-size RWD, and CVPI has a soul (sounds stupid i know)).

    Great video. The chart at the end is the best. Gives everything all at once and makes it so easy to follow. Does this mean that more will be added to your fleet?

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  6 років тому +1

      Hey John. Adding to the fleet? Naw, I'm flat out of car-money. Bummer too cause I it would be fun to pick up another Caprice or two. The prices are pretty good on these cars at this auction and that makes for an easy flip. But, alas, not for me at least at this time. I'll need to move out a car or two before I can buy another. :(

    9K, in australia you have to pay around 20K and thats at a auction as well, they never used to sell to the public, but some bright idea man said why not,they just have to register to buy thats it and thus the car yards and wholesales send there cars to auctions to sell them and still get there moneys worth, meaning they make a lot of profit, compared to when they never sold to the public and only to wholesalers and car yards, which brought them at such a low rate that every car yard would make at least 5K per car when sold ? ?

    Maybe in a future vid you could explain difference between 9C1 and 9C3. Only thing I see is that the 1 has a skinny shifter box that leaves space for police equipment between the seats.

    Hey like your channel. How reliable are these chevy caprice PPV as compared to the Ford Crown vic P71. Just curious how durable these cars are.

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  6 років тому +1

      Thanks so much for checking out my channel and for your comment. From my experience, I find the P71 to be a pretty easy car to work on. Basic and simple engineering, few electronics, hearty and robust running gear. The Caprice is a lightening bolt compared to the Crown Vic. But..., the engine has cylinder deactivation that goes back and requires a new cam and lifter. That's something that's starting to act-up on my Caprice. Otherwise, I hear from other Caprice owners that they're pretty long lasting cars. -Chris

    Is there a reason these were pulled from service with so few miles? Does DE have shorter normal service period? For many agencies the vehicles go 150k and any sold sooner are because their cost to operate, basically reliability, has gotten bad. Are Tthe Cam failures the reason?

      Hey man, thanks for checking out my Caprice auction vid. Of the 10 Caprices that came through the State auctions here in Delaware, most were from the Dept of Justice. I have a hunch that they have a budget that allows for newer cars more often, thus dumping Caprices at such an early age. Also, one of those Caprices that had super low mileage, I think a white 9C1, was a high school Drivers Ed car. Apparently the State over ordered and send the extra Caprice to a high school for driver training. Also, from the State Troopers here that I've spoke with, they all love driving the Caprice, the power, handling... but they don't like working out of a Caprice. Long hours and a fairly cramped cockpit filled with police gear is a big issue. Plus one cop told me that getting into and out of the Caprice a bunch of times through out the shift slows him down and wear's him out. He said when he has a choice he prefers the Tahoe. -Chris

    I find it amazing at the HUGE differences in auction prices for the 2011+ 9C1 Chevrolet Caprice PPV cars compared to similar-vintage P71 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptors. The Chevy patrol cars you showed were also in much better condition......perhaps because they may have been "detective" cars instead of marked squad cars.

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  6 років тому +1

      Hey man, thanks for checking out my vid's! Here in Delaware, I'm finding at these auctions that Dodge Chargers are about double the cost of an equivalent P71 while a Caprice PPV is about double the cost of a Charger.

    Yo Chris....the 2011 with 44k miles is my CAR!!!I. I just about freaked out when I saw it. I know its mine because mine came from De. Also the year, miles and the dent on passenger window pillar and the hole in the console. Also mark on dash where that sticker was on dash...just thought you would appreciate that..by the way, they cleaned it up good, fixed every dent but that one. Car is fun.

      Hey man, thanks for checking out my Caprice video. Dude, that's crazy cool that I have video of your car at auction. Glad you're enjoying her too. I bought a black 9C3 in February at auction and have been loving her ever since. Folks just to know what these cars are. True hidden gems amongst car guys! I try to explain to folks that these Caprices are Corvettes disguised as four-door sedans. -Chris

    • @1VaDude
      @1VaDude 6 років тому

      Having a 2017 Corvette Stingray myself, I would say that your comparison is not all that far off. Take a look at the 2014 to 2017 Chevrolet SS (basically a much jazzier version of the Caprice). It is based upon the Holden Commodore, built in Australia - in the same plant - and is TRULY like a four-door Corvette.
      The Chevrolet SS had the 6.2L V8 engine (a detuned version of the one used in the Corvette Stingray) and was also available with a 6-speed MANUAL transmission. GM really put no effort into marketing the SS, though, and one could be purchased new for less than 45 grand!

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  6 років тому +1

      Hey man, thanks for checking out my video and for your comment. The 9C1 cars are the standard police patrol cars with little wheel center caps, vinyl floors, vinyl back seat and a center console made to accommodate police equipment. The 9C3's are called the Detective cars and are outfitted with full wheel covers, carpeting, cloth seats and a civilian style center console. All 2011 Caprices had the 6.0 liter V8 while the other years had a choice of either the 6.0 liter or I believe a 3.6 V6. Hope that helps. -Chris

    • @1VaDude
      @1VaDude 6 років тому

      The 2011 to 2013 9C1 had the gear shift on the floor, but it was "offset" a bit to the left - looks very weird too - so as to accommodate the large center console for radio equipment, lighting switchgear, radar, plugs, etc.
      The 9C3 - from what I have seen - has the floor shifter in the center console just like a regular family car.
      In 2014, the 9C1 gear shifter was moved to the column (like a Crown Vic). They kept it that way all the up through the final 2017 model. I am not sure about the 9C3 after 2013, though.

They are tested till they break at the Lang Lang test track in Melbourne Victoria Australia. Look up Holden for fucks sake they have a 100 year history, who builds you chev Ss ? Not chev, HOLDEN!!

    Also in australia you cant drive or test any of the cars they sell at auction, basically when the cars number in the austin comes up they drive inside or outside and you bid on it, if you have the contact to repair them, like paint and running gear possible problems, then your safe, but if you dont have any contacts in the panel industry or car painti9ng or mechanical industry you really have to be very careful, because just because the car has low miles say under 100,000 or miles for a 7 year old car, then you simply taking a risk, most times the police will fix and serve all their why chase and other cars when they need it and at the right time as well, so your safe there as far as serving issues but if it has been in a accident, i dont know if you can get the records over there but thats what you need to check, basically a paint thickness gauge, which tell you what the normal factory paint thickness would be and then you will notice the areas which have been repaired will have more thickness to the surface, thats the only way your going to know if the car is damaged before or if there's a record of repairs done to the outside of the car ?

      WOW, great set of comments and thanks so much for sharing this. It's always fascinating to me how many different versions of the Holden Caprice were sent to different parts of the world. Also, I never knew there was a Grange model too. As for the price of gas here in the US, it's been below $3 for a few years now so I really don't pay much attention to it. There are some gas stations that charge 10-15 cents more per gallon so I do shop around but really, it's been so consistent and low for a long, long time. -Chris

    • @7071t6
      @7071t6 6 років тому

      No worries Chris, but think about it, do you really think if GAs was at near 6.00 per gallon would you be buying a V8, like most australians are paying right now, which is just under $1.50 per liter and a gallon is just over 4 lites, it makes my blood boil really ? also my SON has a 1987 VL Holden Ex police chaser car ,called a BT1 designation, all police packs had a BT1 from holden ,.not sure of the FORDS, but as far as holden they are called BT1, which has the 4.9V8 Hi comp motor, AUTO, LSD, trans cooler, and hi accuracy speedometer etc, they are worth around 30 to 40 K now in original unpainted and very good condition, also they did come out in a turbo six engines as well and canary yellow paint as well and also in the V8 versions as well. cheers :)

      The VA State Police have a few in bright red. They are 9C3 cars (full wheel covers, cloth upholstery, etc.). I don't know how long they will go before the auction them off, but I see two of them in Northern Virginia almost every day. From what I assume, they are 2014 or 2015 model year vehicles.

    Are these cars faster than the crown vics?

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for checking out my Caprice auction video. And yeah, these Caprices are wildly quicker than a Vic. They have a 6 liter LS V8 with about 105 more horsepower and a six speed trans. But really, they're just way more refined than any Vic. Everything about the Caprice just feels newer and more modern. Now the Vic has plenty of great qualities and some are better than the Caprice, but in terms of performance, the Caprice just smokes the Vic. -Chris

    • @1VaDude
      @1VaDude 6 років тому

      The ONLY advantage to the Crown Vic is that it was a 'body on frame' design, while the Caprice PPV is a unibody. The Crown Vic is easier to repair after a mishap - but I still like the Caprice a lot better if I had to choose one over the other.

      Yeah assuming I keep my Vic long enough I want to swap it to a 6.8 V10 and have the cam custom made, because while the 4.6 SOHC V8 lasts long and all, it makes absolutely terrible power. I mean, 250 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque for a V8 powered sedan? It's abysmal, and it has no right to be in a police "interceptor." Modern day 4 cylinders and 6 cylinders that are naturally aspirated make WAY more power than this thing, and heck the Modular isn't even that old even though it's based off this ancient design.
      The LS proves that you can make a powerful V8 that will last long.

      Thanks man for the comment. When folks ask about my Caprice, I usually tell them that these cars are Corvettes dressed up as a four-door sedan. Really exciting cars to drive. -Chris

    Interesting. I can see some have the ugly police center console and some have a more normal looking one.

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  6 років тому +1

      Thanks man. Yeah, that center console is one of the big differences between the 9C1 and 9C3 models. That and carpeting versus the vinyl flooring. Those two things really make a difference! -Chris

      Hey man, the bidding for these Caprices, Crown Vics and other cars that the State of Delaware sells is done online at US Gov Bid dot Com. I would recommend an inspection though of any cars that you might be interested. I've seen some cars that look good in photos but lousy in person and some K9 units that you can even smell before you even get close. -Chris

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  6 років тому

      Hey Dan B. That video footage is from the State surplus auction held in Delaware City every few weeks. Always lots of cars though not many deals sometimes. Occasionally they'll have some weird things to auction like construction equipment, surplus boats, canoe's and other park equipment and even unclaimed stolen merchandise. Thanks for checking out my video and subscribing! -Chris

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  6 років тому +1

      Go to US Gov Bid dot Com and you'll see a listing of area government surplus auctions. The State of Delaware posts their auctions there, time, date and location. The bidding is online but you've got to do an inspection before considering bidding. There's some turds at the auction that you don't want to get stuck with. -Chris

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  6 років тому +1

      Crazy right! Apparently that 40K mile Caprice was ordered in error and when it arrived the State gave it to the schools to use as a Drivers Ed car. Imagine that. A 355 horsepower, four-door Corvette as a learners car. -Chris
