  • In this video I will be discussing what to makes a wonderful level. We'll mainly be looking at the Donkey Kong Country series and how those developers made such great levels.

    I'm so incredibly inspired by DKC's level design. The way it introduces players to an idea, and then explores it.
    Here's a unique aspect though: The idea gets ditched most of the time. This means that a level becomes unique and replayable. It makes each individual level so memorable 😊
    It allows this gimmick to fully explore themselves in a single encapsulated level, instead of advancing it over multiple levels.
    I enjoyed the examination of the factory level.
    There are so many levels in the trilogy that can be examined all on their own to find it's intentions of teaching the player how something works, and would actually be a decent excerise to strengthen design analysis by picking any of them :)
    Awesome video, I enjoyed the comedy :)

      I think the fact that DKC ditches the ideas is what is most appealing to me! For example, Mario games usually draw out the main idea over multiple levels, and for someone who LOVES 2D platforming games, it can get kind of boring sometimes. Honestly hats off to Retro Studios for coming up with so many great ideas.

    Nice video. But what's not nice is now I'm gonna buy tropical freeze after already playing it on the Wii U :)

    You have a really nice voice for this and it shows that you put a lot of work in the editing. That said, you don't get to Jungle Hijinks until almost the 4:00 mark and you lost me at points with the humor. Maybe just stick to game design analysis, since I feel like most of your viewers are here for more serious content. You have a lot of potential, keep it up!
