  • In this third episode of the Design Dive series 'Revisiting Evil', we look at the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3: two games that have effectively rekindled 'classic' survival horror games for a modern era. We explore the challenge of bringing them back to a modern audience; establishing what makes them so compelling as they adopt elements from previous games, as well as the limitations that somewhat stifle the experience.

With part 3 of Revisiting Evil, we've almost caught up with the modern day! Join me soon in part 4 in which the conversation on Mr X and Nemesis continues very much into Biohazard and Village. Given those two games effectively sandwich the two remakes and show a continuation of the trend.
Also, to reiterate from the description, the special camera shots in REmake 2 are achieved using the following mod:

Another observation point about Mr.X and his ability to enter 'safe rooms' I found is that all of those room are dead end and contain small corridor.
I believe that in addition of not annoying player when they are saving or doing inventory is that; If Mr.X enter those area there's high chance that the player will be soft-lock and has to reload.
This is because you can't kill Mr.X, and when down Mr.X body will block player movement. If Mr.X enter those area player may be in a situation where there's nothing they can do to exist the room because Mr.X will bodyblock them until they die.

I'm excited for the remake of Dead Space, there are videos on UA-cam where the developers have shown some of their work and it looks impressive. Something interesting about the remake of Dead Space is what the developers call peeling, as the necromorphs take damage, their flesh begins to peel away from the bone.

I feel that most of the issues with the Nemesis encounters in 3 can probably be explained by the same thing affecting everything else in that game: lack of money, lack of time. After the huge success of 2 it's truly a crime how horribly Capcom mishandled the development of the sequel.

@@emulation2369 RE3R was developed by M2, a secondary smaller team. RE2R was developed by the Main Team and I don't know if you're aware of the Feedback sessions they did with the MCQ type of QnA for RE3, Capcom now cares about feedbacks especially after fiasco of RE5 and RE6. RE4 is being developed by the Main Team not M2 and also RE Village was Revelations 3 and was set to be released a year earlier but the feedback from the players was so strong that they decided to give it 1 more year in the oven to change the story and released it as RE8 Village instead of Revelations 3. The original RE8 is still alive and will probably be released as RE9. RE4R is a bigger project, just take a look at its legacy. I just hope it lives up to the original or at least stands out in a meaningful way. If not then we already have original RE4 especially with the HD Mod released for PC this year.
P.S: I agree about them being greedy, there games don't have regional prices enabled which makes it extremely tough for people living in 3rd World countries like my self to buy. I did buy RE Village on Day 1 cuz I saved up for it but you get the point.

Honestly, I was hoping to see a little more detail on the AI behaviors of units in those games. For example, I noticed that both those stalkers have a problem with "Door Ownership". If you slightly open a door, they can't pass through the door, they can't push it either since it is on player's ownership. Therefore they just get stuck and after a minute they loose you due to their BT timeout on being stuck branch I suppose. Then they go back to search behavior. But such an obvious thing is very well hidden unless you specifically look for it. And when you look for it, it makes the game super easy to play since MrX doesn't pose no threat unless you get caught up in lickers in the otherside. There are many other things for regular zombies and lickers that the game does some trickery for. For example, how does zombies chunked together turn out to see you? As if their AI broadcasts signals in a sphere nearby to notify their fellows so that once a unit sees you, nearby will too. This is more of a thing in the classic REs. But it would have been better to get a bit more detailed analysis and comparison. :/

_'Design Dive'_ is always video essays about the application of AI in games, and how that ties into the larger design merits of a particular title. _'AI and Games'_ is where I explain where stuff works. If I made an _'AI and Games'_ episode on Resident Evil 2, it would be a technical breakdown of how zombies, lickers, Mr X etc. actually work in the game. But I don't know 100% for sure, so for now, I don't make the video. Hope that clarifies things!
As for the doors, yeah, I could spend an entire video talking about how much of a pain in the ass doors are for AI characters. I actually find the doors incredibly frustrating in RE2 and Biohazard.

Interesting that you label the RE3 dodge as a wholly positive mechanic. You did mention that it is a little over powered which is my core issue with it. IMO Navigating that tight corridor of zombies in a Resident Evil game should be a combination of weighing how many resources you can spend as well as clever navigation and positioning, not how well you can press a dodge button and get free crits multiple times in a row. In addition to being powerful the dodge button is also relatively easy to get the hang of. Especially compared to RE3s original dodge that was unreliable enough to be almost a surprise mechanic to some people.
Don't get me wrong, the dodge is fun, and it makes sense in RE3 specifically, but I am glad they kept it out of RE2. Navigating some of the office rooms of the RPD with zed coming from multiple angles is beautifully tense and thrilling. Leon or Claire doing dodge rolls would kill the danger of those situations.
    Great video 👍

    • @AIandGames
      @AIandGames  Рік тому +2

Fair point! I think if they had any kind of 'dodge' like ability it would have to be a lot less powerful than in RE3. Like a much higher risk/reward element to it in that it doesn't always work. The RE3 version would just turn Leon into John Wick, which doesn't really make sense. 😅

@@AIandGames Exactly! Its worth noting that while RE4 is pretty much loved by everyone, its also marked as the death of classic RE by a lot of people. While I love RE in general, I'd like to postpone superhero stuff as long as possible for more classic style games please and thank you!

The conversations around the remakes of 2 and 3 are extremely similar to how people were comparing them back in the day. I remember how my friends would describe RE3 as “more of an action game than horror” and how they thought Nemesis was “more annoying than scary”. It’s somehow very satisfying to hear how the remakes more than 20 years later are still like that.
