Building the Modelcollect 1/72 Scale B-52G Stratofortress Bomber --“BUFF”

- In my longest model video to date, we build, paint camouflage, detail, and weather the Modelcollect 1/72 scale B-52G Stratofortress kit #MDO 722202. Modelcollect aftermarket correction/upgrade parts that include the nose, tail, and flap sections are incorporated. Additionally, we substitute the supplied BUFF markings with emblems from the Caracal B-52G/H decal set #72077. This is Project #19 and the 6th overall Viewer’s Choice winning request. It is a behemoth of an amateur model undertaking!

I’ll never get tired watching this guy’s models and his endless stories about his life and personal experiences, great job and don’t stop !
Waaay too little commentary.
Actually, my videos with the most commentary are the least viewed 🤨
@@MaxAfterburner try looking at viewer retention instead, it's shows people's preference more accurately, as on can't know the amount of commentary before clicking on the video (and therefore registering a view)
Also the next project better be a Delta Dart, it's a funny little thing
I should clarify that the retention rate is poor as well. I don't know what I would talk about for ~30 minutes, plus someone chimed in today that they didn't care for my voice really 😜
@@MaxAfterburner Thanks. I guess everyone is different. I like watching videos like yours to learn tips and tricks. I want to hear you explain why you are doing the things you do, mistakes to avoid, tricks/tips to achieve certain effects and so on. Just watching you build the model with little commentary is...I dunno...not much point. Just my $0.02 though. If you get more views the less you talk then I guess that is the way to go and I am the odd duck.
That is one of the most visually appealing paint jobs I have ever seen on a model. You perfectly captured one of the best looking color schemes the BUFF ever carried and knocked the project out of the park. Very nice job!
Thanks so much Crimson_Ghost 😃
Yep...nice 1980s SIOP scheme.
Max_Afterburner would love to see you do a f14 tomcat and also would love to see you do a TBD devestator my great grandfather was the torpedo man/ tail gunner depicted in the famous painting scratch one flattop. His plane was recently found at the bottom of the coral sea
Hi Little Devil, I've already done the F-14D Tomcat for the channel and it remains my most successful video in terms of number of views. Check it out at: ua-cam.com/video/7vZWKOPU_vo/v-deo.html
Agree completely about the colour scheme.👍👌😁
Beautiful job. This camo pattern is the best I have ever seen. Love the B-52 doesn't matter the model letter. They are awesome bombers. Not just because of the bomb loads they are capable of dropping. But just the awe inspiring size and the distinctive sound and the Black engine smoke. All tell a person that something big is going to happen. Mind blowing power.
Thanks Jennifer, the B-52 is a force to be reckoned with for sure 😱
It's a bad a$$ heavy bomber for its time of engineering, they have upgraded the engines to more fuel economic & upgraded the avionics, it'll be in service for many more years.
Great video on the mighty buff. Had to watch it twice, first to watch the build, the second time to read all about it. Miss seeing these over the UK. Keep up the good work
Thanks Kev B 😊
As a teen, I had the Monogram version. Building it and doing the camo paint was one of the best times I ever had.
Love your channel. It’s so relaxing, you have an awesome voice and the builds are great
Hi Owen, thanks so much for those comments. 😃
I think you hit the nail on the head for colors! Excellent job as always Max!
Thanks k c, it's one of my favorite painting outcomes so far that I've completed for the channel 😃
That was a joy to watch! What a model! The B52's remain my favourite aircraft of all time. I remember as a kid watching Stanley Kubrick's "Dr Strangelove" in which a flight of B52's head for and attack the Soviet Union.
Thanks Murray, I'm very pleased at the reception and overall positive outcome of this build/video!
... in one of Darth Vader's early life flying mission!
I really enjoy your style of presentation, an interesting mix of explaining what you're doing and some interesting plane facts thrown in. Music is tasteful, relaxing, and kept in its place. Very intersting, thanks for a pleasant video!
Hi Norm G, I appreciate the comprehensive review and I'm glad you like the overall format! 😃
A lot of nostalgia with this video for me. For one, my dad was stationed to Carswell in the 60s as part of the USN close-out on the F-111B. So we were there when AF Reserve flew all the B-36s west to AZ. If memory serves, there were two air refuel wings and a B-52 wing at Carswell back then, and they would have to Alert every so often. Not always at the same time, either. But, you got to where you could hear the difference between KC-135 and BUFFS.
Also, some ancient memories of the old Monogram B-52 (I think it was a D but might have been a B). That fuselage was two pieces, just two pieces--an intimidating slab of plastic to rival the wings. Took _two_ cans of Testor's Silver (or two of the black) to cover that bird, too.
Blasts from the past!
I built a b-52 model when I was a kid. It was a Revell brand. Was my first plane model cause my dad was in the Air Force in Minot ND where b-52’s where. Also built a KC-135 stratotanker and my favorite plane the F-117A. The stratotanker was refueling the F-117A when they where hung from my bedroom ceiling.
I grew up less than a half mile from Barksdale Airforce base and I remember this color scheme well as we would pass these bombers everyday. I am amazed at how you captured the colors and they are spot on. As always this has been a great video and I enjoyed watching your work. You are giving the Europeans on UA-cam a run for their money in the model building department. Thanks for taking the time to make this video for us to enjoy.
Thanks so much Silverstacks, I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and the colors of this B-52! 😄
wow i wish i had the patience and dedication as you....the b-52 looks insane great work :)
Thanks Methira 😀
Very nice work. Growing up with my dad being a civilian USAF engine specialist I developed a natural love for all military aviation so I really appreciate you including facts about the aircraft in your video.
Thanks Wade 😃
No annoying music. Good production and a soothing voice while making great models. Take my sub man.
Welcome aboard Aeon Voom, and thanks! 😃
This model is all about the paint job, hands down. Great job.
Thanks 😇
I know I’m late, but I was saving these for a “rainy” day. Your videos are so calming, and they help me relax during this admittedly not-calm time.
I got to go up inside a B-52 once as a kid, and the thing that struck me most was just how small and cramped the cockpit was. Those guys that flew (and fly) those things are true professionals.
Keep up the excellent work!
Hi Peter, glad you liked this BUFF 😃
Great camo! I too worked F-16's. You're right. The mission comes first.
The camo you chose was on our G model buffs. My fav. Our buffs last mission was Bagdad, then to the boneyard. How sad. RIP 379th Bomb Wing. Wurtsmith AFB Michigan.
Hi Tim, glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for your service! 😃
OUTSTANDING and correct. THERE IS NO PERFECT color when deployed, ground crews use what they have or can get. Nice job.
Hi Douglas, thank you very much! 😃
Espectacular, si señor.
Enhorabuena...💪💪
Gran trabajo...👍👍
¡Muchas gracias! 😄
I've been sitting on a 1977 production Monogram 1/72 B-52 kit that I found sealed at thrift store a few years ago. Been waiting for one of those "blizzard weeks" where it snows so much there is nothing better to do than kick back and build a model of this stature to pass the time.
It's going have to be a long blizzard, sski 🙂
Looks fantastic...wish i had the room for one. Great work on the walk lines, they make the build
Hi brisbare10, it's a monster size model -- at least for me 😃
Vietnam era camo is my fave paint scheme.
Along with Tunes, the Devil has the best Planes too!
Beautiful aircraft and a fantastic-build-Well Done!
Gosh, thanks Ian 🤩
Great video. I truly enjoyed the info notes during the build. I will add a few of my own personal experience notes. I was a weapons loader at Barskdale AFB from 93-97. It was an amazing experience and one I will never forget. After I first arrived I was assigned to help remove the last 20mm tail gun that we had on base. I was green as hell at that time but that was fucking awesome. I received multiple commendation awards for missions that we loaded and flew and came back empty. (wink wink). The amount of conventional weapons that the plane can hold is mind numbing but the real deal is when the plane is fitted the with big boys (nukes). When our entire base would practice nuke warfare readiness, there was nothing more awesome and intimidating than looking down the flightline and seeing over 30 planes loaded for full tilt ass whooping. Our squadron chief would brief us all and end with this statement. "When we generate we become a 3rd world power. There is the US, Russia and Barksdale AFB". We will always be second to none and we will always have air superiority. So sleep well at night people. Even if we have zipperheads wanting to send us "Christmas" gifts. Cheers.
Thanks for your service, sir!
@@MaxAfterburner I appreciate that!!
Magnificent B-52! Merry Christmas!
Thanks so very much Sprue Fascination, and Merry Christmas to you! 🙂
Gorgeous! Love that paint job.
Hi PCJ3 40, thanks, it's one of my favorite exterior results 🖌️🖌️😊
Loved these big Monogram kits Well Done
Thanks bad finger 😃
Another beautiful project, great work as always 👍🏼
Thanks MikkyTee 😊
Excellent video and interesting footage and facts about the aircraft. I particularly like your choice of colour scheme. I've seen one of these models painted all grey and there is a lot of grey!!
Thanks Allan! I made it more difficult on myself by going with the camo, but I thought it would be more interesting than the grey this time 'round.
I've already commented how awesome this is, but I would like to point something out. When I started watching you just a year ago, you had 16k subscribers. Now you're up to 23.4k. That's a testament to your skills, buddy. Keep up the great work.
Thanks dt4629, more viewers than I ever thought possible, but still a small channel comparatively speaking. 😃
I have watched a few of your videos now (overdosing on UA-cam after Knee Replacement), and the effort you put in from the actual video of the 1.1 aircraft and the information about the aircraft during the build is a nice touch. Your models are nicely done and the tips you give to budding model makers is I am sure useful to those starting out in the hobby. Well done mate.
Hi Ric, thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying them during your convalescence. Get well soon! 😊
@@MaxAfterburner Cheers.
Holy crap that look amazing the best b52 I’ve seen 😍🇦🇺🇺🇸🍻
Thanks Riley! 😃
0:20 looks like a hot-start on engine 3
Sure did!
It's called a "torch" caused by turbulent air going through the compressor fan blades and then adding the fuel.
I did not realize that. Woaw
I worked on this bird, thank you. As always, amazing!
Thanks john JohnB, I'm glad you enjoyed it 😀
Beautiful build. Job well done.
Hi Eric, thank you very much! 😊
It's a very interesting color scheme. My Late father use to be in the AirForce and seen many of these planes. and showed allot of photos of them to me. Only the ones I saw were in their natural metal color with red highlights, and Markings .But this is an Interesting color scheme I have to say. Nice model
Thanks, CJ. Aim High, Air Force! 🙂
60 ish years. Nothing stops her.
Absolutely stunning
Hi les venus, thanks so very much! As I have mentioned to others in the past, I was very thrilled on how the colors all came together! 😎
Damn, that paint looks good.
Thanks ɑʟpʜɑ ɱɑсʜɪиɑ, I really like it too. It's parked on a coffee table right now and I have to stop and look at the camouflage paint every time I walk by it. 😉
Amazing work as usual sir always a pleasure watching and learning new methods and knowledge of the aircraft!!
Thanks CASTOR TROY!
My mind is blown by this masterpiece
Thanks very much cx 😊
Nice video, good job Sir! I like the sound of the rain!!
Hi Francisco, thanks, I'm glad you liked it. 😊
I spy a drum pad at the end. Nice build!
Hi Strike Eagle's Perch, that pad makes for a nice and handy display base for those glamour shots! 😉
I’m so proud to have worked my blood sweat and Monsters with the BUFF 96th Combat AGE.
👍
I knew someone(he's past now) who was witness to camouflaging the B-52's during Vietnam. He told me that they literally used mops with buckets of paint to Camouflage them so no two were ever identical moreover the edges between colors was never precise.
Hi goliath63079, the military is known for improvising and making do with the situation at hand and the painting techniques described sounds very reasonable in a wartime situation 👍
Nice job! B52s do need some wing droop, though. Once partially fueled, the wings droop downwards and the tip gear struts will be partially compressed. On taxi the wingtips bounce and the tip gear will pogo completely clear of the ground. The tip gear tire also chatters and squeals a bit depending on how it sets back down again. I was on a ROAM team in the 80's - SAC - at Ellsworth. We had H models. Keep the awesome builds and great videos coming!
Thanks 28th OMS and thanks for your service!
You took me back in time. Thanks ! (USAF-SAC, CASTLE AFB, CA 74-78)
Hi philmonat9352 , thanks for your service! ✈️
B47 THEN B52. Great work you do sir. Im currently doing all the cold war era bombers. On the B47 now.
Hi vermont Vermont, thanks, glad you enjoyed. Have fun with your bomber fleet! 😃
stunningly beautiful model Max😍😍😍😍😍 terrible sad to see them in the boneyard 😪 Wales UK.
Hi fred ted, thank so much! I know many B-52s come over and frequent the skies of the UK 😄
@@MaxAfterburner we live in a very quiet rural county on the west coast , so hardly see any planes now .Passenger jets flying over to US is all , We used to live in Mid Wales near the famous Mach Loop , that was good! 30 yrs ago we could see Jaguar , Tornado, Harrier , Hawk, Tucano and Hercules at low level ( You could see pilots) also F15- but at altitude , my wife became a plane spotter . good days !
Wow!!! Nice job!!!
Thanks much Turbilhão de Ideias 😀
What a great build. As I don't have the room for something that big I'm tempted to get a BUFF in 1/144.
It should be more manageable 😉
Very nice build Max! I always like watching your videos. I learn so much! I really would like to see your model display room someday. Keep on building😁
Thanks hunters1AR 38654! I have no idea where I'm going to put this one! 😲
A fantastic build... bravo👌
Thanks Norse ko! 🙂
I have the exact same model, but it sits under my bed in the box. I'm too afraid to start building it by I have no experience and I think my motivation will leave me half way through. But someday....with help from ur video! 👍
Hi Isaac, you can do it! One day you may wake up in the middle of the night and see that box hovering over your bed, beckoning you to work on it 😇
The B52g had J57 turbojet engines. The TF33 turbofan engines were only used on the B52h. I worked on B52g bombers at Griffiss AFB with 416th bomb wing and at Barksdale AFB with the 2nd..
The wing tip tank were not optional, but were always present. Their main purpose was to prevent the wings from fluttering.
The tan / light green / dark green with a white belly was the original color scheme. This was later replaced with a much darker green / black camo over the entire plane including its bottom.
Just...just...MAGNIFICENT!
Thanks Dennis!
Amazing job. 👏
Hi Adam, thank you - much appreciated.
Merry. Christmas great work all year long
Thanks Jon, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you!
this bird earned you a like and a sub. keep building!
Thanks for signing up Arrowhead 😀
Great build.
Hi Jacob, so glad you like this BUFF!
Excellent job friend!!!, best regards from México, City.
Gracias!
I thought I had commented. Wow, masterpiece. I have the early kit but I’m going to build the same era as you. Just wish there was some extra Ordnance available, like Quails and Hound Dogs...
Awesome build!
Hi Harald, thanks very much! I would have loaded this B-52G with conventional bombs had they been included in the kit. I just added the Tomahawks to at least give it a more "dangerous" appearance 😃.
Awesome build.
Hi The Bob Loblaw Show !, thank you 😃
Max_Afterburner your a busy guy. I’m just getting started after an extended time away from it. Looking forward to more. 🇨🇦👌
thank you very much upload this video.I really like that B 52G Stratofortress bomber
Thanks Kyaw, I'm glad you enjoyed it because it was a lot of work! 😉
this is the first time i've watched one of these, and really enjoyed it, keep up the good work
Thanks, I appreciate that DNA Deliverer 😊
58-0216 is as close as I get as a photo. Seen many B-52 at air shows and TDY in the UK. Surprised to see two return to service. You must make a F-117. Cheers!
I thought the B52 A had the B47 style canopy ant the cockpit arrangement was front to rear and not side by side. The B52 B was the first Side by Side arrangement. When I went to Fire Control Mechanic school at Lowery AFB in Denver, we toured a B52 B model in Hanger 1. I built a Monogram B52 D when I was still in the Air Force. I let it hanging in the Break room in the flight simulator building at Anderson AFB Guam in 1977.
Too cool! Thanks max afterburner!
Thanks Eman! 😀
That initial starting on this video was a "Quick start" by use of Starter Cartridges verses a Normal start by an external Hobart Pneumatic system that uses forced air to turn the engine turbine blades to starting speed. The Starter Cartridge is a Canister packed with gun powder about the size of a large coffee can and is installed on each engine on Alert Aircraft (nuclear loaded) So at a moments notice, the pilots can start the aircraft quickly without external power, by a simple electronic switch that can start either one engine or all 8 engines at once. Using Starter Cartridges are also a bitch to clean before another cartridge can be installed to bring the aircraft to a "Ready Status" again. I may have worked on this Aircraft with tail number 218...I was based at Mather AFB California from 1981-85. Nice work btw!
I grew up in Fair Oaks/Carmichael I remember hearing the B-52 firing up there engines all through the 80's I remember a crash in 82, cool place to grow up between Mather, McClellan, and Beale AFB's
@@fleetwarrior75 I witnessed that crash in 82! I watched the men board the AC and taxi out. bad takeoff and crashed with all onboard with full fuel. I think it was pilot error. Bad day , so sad.
@@ItsConstitutional A B-52 crashed at FAFB in 1994. Which crash are you talking about? The aircraft in question did not crash on take-off nor did it have a full load of fuel.
@@slobama Look up the crash at Mather AFB Nov-Dec 1982 Two birds from Castle AFB were temporary stationed there till the runway at Castle AFB was fixed and up for business. The day it opened the Two Castle Bombers took off on a MITO from Mather AFB, one crashed soon after takeoff about 5 miles southwest of the base.
totalpkgpainting Hobart's are power only. They don't provide air for ground start. For that, you'd either need an air cart, with either a Hobart or md 3, or a -60. -60s being gas turbines, which provide air and power. Carts AREN'T gunpowder, that burns far too quickly and powerfully, they would blow the breech. Breeches ARE a pain in the ass to clean, to ! Specially after QC stops you from using easy bake, which works excellent, and instead make you use the Mil H approved freon cleaner, which SUCKS ! NOT gunpowder, they are made of a much slower burning solid fuel, roughly the same as say the SRBs on the shuttle. Made either by Olin or Morton Thiokal ( the people who made the shuttle SRBs ). B 52s by the way, have only 2 flap positions, full up or full down. No ailerons either, just spoilers. And the B 52s no longer stand nuclear alert, since SAC stood down, but they still do cart starts, practice generations and MITO launches, just to keep in practice for an EWO generation and launch.
I been watching the updates in facebook, and men it is awesome. good job!!!!
Thanks Giovannelli FXE4520, I'm glad you liked it! I didn't know it was making the rounds on FB 🤔
OMG great work like always love the great info you do on each build and real jets pls keep them coming
Thanks Gilbert, I was really worried that this episode would be bogged down with the so much information. 🙂
Fabulous build, the model looks better than the genuine art
Hi John, thank you. I was very pleased with the colors and I still wonder how the paint mixtures came to my mind out of the blue.
Great build! Ever think of doing the Model Collect B-2A Spirit?
Hi Minuteman Modelworks, thanks! It's my understanding and looking on my own that the two B-2 kits Model Collect released are hard to come by these days. I'm not sure if and when they may complete another production run. Until then... ?
This is the only plane I see flying overhead from time to time, (its real easy to recognize with its quad contrails) and think..."I hope thats one of ours" or "I hope he doesn't have an accident"...lol
I noticed that the kit has all of the upward ejection seats equipped with ACESII ejection seats. Have those seats been retrofitted into the BUFF?
Not for the G's, nor did the G Models have the bunk on the upper deck, the left hand side of the Cockpit area where they have the bunk in this model, is a rack that goes from floor to ceiling. Most of the rack was empty due to solid state equipment replacing the old vacuum tube equipment, so we would store our A-3 Bags behind the panels to keep them out of the way so we had clear floor space to lay down and to aid in manual egress if needed. The maintainers at Wurtsmith also installed the oven on the floor inside the rack bay, that was a nice feature to have and everyone wanted to fly the K tails during desert storm so you could warm up MRE's or anything else you wanted to warm. I was a gunner at Wurtsmith 87-92.
i have both the revell 1/144 b-52 and the revell 1/144 boeing 767. What surprised me is that the b52 is significantly smaller then the 767, but the b52 has huge wings, both in length and width
Hi David, I'll have to check that out. I had never thought to compare them side by side. 😇
@@MaxAfterburner hi. Yes i was really surprised. The b52 is a relative small aircraft compared to civil airliners and also very slim. Only the wings are huge.
Nice work 😍😍
Hi Agent M, thanks very much! 😃
would love to see a F-117A build someday.. haven't been able to find any good ones, especially as good as yours are..
Hi Nokturnal, the F-117 will be one of the possibilities that may be selected during the "Wild Card" draw at the end of the upcoming Project #20 video.
@@MaxAfterburner awesome. Fingers crossed then...
If you can, can you post or add to your profile, the equipment you use ?
Thanks for the videos. It has made me rekindle interest in kits again
Hello Sathish, I usually add that in my videos, but the B-52 episode was already packed with side information. I currently use the Iwata Eclipse airbrush and I previously used the NEO airbrush. My compressor is an old Paasche 1/10 HP D500 without a pressure gauge.

I built that exact Stuka kit when I was in sixth grade in 1976. I paid a whopping $6.99 for it.🤑The Mustang and Spitfire were $5.99😂.
And the B-52 didn't replace the B-36 that was replaced by the B-47 which was then replaced by the B-52.

Were Tomahawks really ever on a B-52, or were they used as substitutes for ALCMs?
Hi D C, they only did some testing using the Tomahawks on the B-52, but it never really took off. 😁
Beautiful
