Hi Rob, great video! whats the benefits of running new floor joists perpendicular to the existing joists? ( instead of doubling up on the existing ) thanks
There are many ways to support the roof structure so that those beams on the floor would be out of the way. All that great work with the eye sores left like that.
@@GMLondon How would you know? Using you foolish what if scerario to validate the beams left out. Do you feel all big with your youtube justice warrior comment? Where you there when they made the agreement?
These sort of jobs are for storage spaces in lofts, whilst it would look neater it would add significant cost to remove purlin supports and add in steel/ glulams. Not to mention then its more involvement and cost with building control. When all the customer would have wanted is an insulated storage space.
Fabulous transformation. Questions: loft hatches are notoriously skimpy and narrow and pathetically small in modern properties. Have you ever done reconstruction work on a hatch that both widens and elongates it? What I'd want, money-no-object, would be just this, then fit in an electric ladder that opens the hatch and down comes the ladder, the motor stops and allows you to then climb easily and safely up into the loft. Then of course would come the flooring as shown here and the boarding up for the 2 pitches of the roof, fabulous lighting, even power points. Can it be done and would planning permission be required? The 2nd question is: what about having the fancy, LED RECESSED lighting in the 2 bedrooms below the loft space and also for the airing cupboard and landing. The shower room here has already been transformed, but they put in a false ceiling to accommodate the recessed lighting. Fair enough. But if I wanted the original ceiling height in 2 bedrooms RETAINED, does a special recess/box not need to be fitted in the loft, BEFORE it's all sealed off so that, any electrician can then go into the loft and then into the box/recess to deal with the lower rooms' lighting, etc? I'd be interested in your feedback.
Nice to see an electrician have all the screw slots on the sockets all go the same way! Made a big difference but do none of these people have any water tanks in their loft space?
Would love a loft install recently tided mines out from previous owner the big thick bit of wood you were cutting into then hammering off about a inch is that important to run your yen’s joists off that then floor on top
I'm just doing the exact job ,just on a tea break . I noticed you have used ,I think 5x2 across joist ,I dont believe these are high enough as I'm using 7x2 and the total height of insulation from ceiling is 270mm which li believe is minimum requirement I'm only boarding a small area for storage the rest of insulation is 400 mm toastie !
Great video, thank you 👍🏻 my loft is exactly the same and we've considered doing exactly this since we had our water tank removed. But we also have no felt under our roof tiles. Is this still okay to put Kingspan again? I was worried about a condensation problem? Also, could you possibly do a more detailed video do you think? We'd be very grateful and interested to see it 😊
Hello Emma if the job is habitable room we would put breathable membrane on roof with dry ridge and soffit vents for ventilation. If it’s just storage soffit vents and tile vents are fine for roof to breathe. I’ve had a few requests for a more detailed video so it will happen soon
Fantastic job guys👍. Ill be looking at a loft conversion soon, shame I didn't come across this video when you were in Bournemouth; could have asked you for a quote. Really enjoyed the few videos I've watched.

@@builditwithrob Ah, so 200mm total insulation not 300mm? My worry is 7 inches is a little shy of the 200mm insulation roll and then is 9x2 going to be steady enough when flooring goes on top! 🤷♂️
Nice job, would you ever not use cross supports? I moved into a house with mini loft conversion (storage) skimmed and carpet. Looking at the depth of loft hatch there’s 4inch timbers & 18mm board, partition wall in middle because of chimney, low ceiling. Think mine is strong enough for kids to play ect ?

Got a quick question about the bearers you cut here. I have the same issue in my loft, but I'm not comfortable with cutting them like you have (I'd probably take my bloody hand off!) If I attach some 2x2s to the top of the existing joists with Gorilla Glue and screws (to add extra height), then cross brace with 5x2 like you have here, is that something that will add strength? Having the 2x2s on top will mean I can board over the top of the bearers without cutting them (we have a lot of head height so not bothered about losing a bit). We also have a supporting wall below so the spans are quite short. Any advice is appreciated, cheers!
@@builditwithrob sorry Rob got another question! Our main aim for our loft is a storage with a secondary use of a cinema room with a wall mounted projector and some bean bags. Would this sort of floor be alright for occasional use for the above with two people sitting up there (so not a party room)? Thanks again!
Yes, they should install the waterproof membrane, they also created thermal bridge installing plasterboards directly to roof rafters. Maybe it is nice to watch, but a low-quality job.
Nice job Rob. I'm about to do mine. Was there a reason you did the cupboard framework before the Kingspan? Doesn't it make the Kingspan installation more difficult through the framing?
So I assume removing this supports wasn't possible without extensive structural changes and cost, which wasn't worth it for the customer who just wanted storage space?
Question, why do you plaster all over the drywall not just the joints? We just tape our joints and mud them and mudin reinforced corners. Great watching you work,
It’s a traditional uk method which provides a plaster finish to timber studwork or rafters, called ‘plasterboard and skim’. It’s certainly possible, as an alternative, to use tapered edge boards and fill the joists without needing a plaster skim coat - a personal choice.
There seems to be alot of confusion with cross bracing. You've used 5x2 here . Do you always use that or do you use different sizes depending on the sizes of the existing joists? Plus is the cross bracings main purpose to strengthen and tie together the existing joists or to give a space for more insulation or both?
it helps with two things - provides some extra strengtheningn by shortening the span of the rafters - which is a good idea if you intend to increase the weight it needs to hold (plasterboard, plaster… more insulation … etc) - also provides support for the new ceiling which can hold the lights and also some insulation above it as for size, i am not qualified to explain that, but in my case i went the same (ish) size as the rafters are (well, i got bigger for myself, as being stronger than needed never hurts :) ) in my own loft i added a vapour barrier layer and did increase my insulation to 200mm - plus plasterboard so it needed the extra support hope it helps somewhat - but of course, i am only a diy guy and not professional

Plus is the cross bracings main purpose to strengthen and tie together the existing joists or to give a space for more insulation or both?
it helps with two things
- provides some extra strengtheningn by shortening the span of the rafters - which is a good idea if you intend to increase the weight it needs to hold (plasterboard, plaster… more insulation … etc)
- also provides support for the new ceiling which can hold the lights and also some insulation above it
as for size, i am not qualified to explain that, but in my case i went the same (ish) size as the rafters are (well, i got bigger for myself, as being stronger than needed never hurts :) )
in my own loft i added a vapour barrier layer and did increase my insulation to 200mm - plus plasterboard
so it needed the extra support
hope it helps somewhat - but of course, i am only a diy guy and not professional
