Their the factory tuners except for the "B" string key. The bass arrived with that tuner key-head broken off. I started to send the bass back. But I remembered I had an extra SQUIER brand tuner. It was taken from unused bass neck. It fit and worked perfectly.
I had a 'preamp' installed in the bass. The preamp had 4 pan-pots (4 knobs), instead of the three pan-pots that were originally there. The guy that worked on the bass moved the 'cable jack' to the bottom of the instrument. He used the hole where the jack' was and used it for the 4th pan-pot (knob). Did you understand that?
Thanks a lot man...I don't have any questions for you since you've answered them through other people, but I don't encounter such helpful players like yourself. I recently purchased this bass on amazon and I can't wait for it's arrival! Cheers brother!
Nice video Max. I grabbed one these as I needed a bass in the studio @ home for a project and was blown away by. It was pretty much setup perfect out the box. I put on a set of Marcus Miller Fatbeams on it and tuned it down a whole step. Lots of sound variation, thick & fat or bitey & funky. Money well spent.
@CSthelevite The plate on the bass is the original one. I had a preamp installed in this SQUIER. The repairman relocated the 1/4 inch jack to the bottom end of the bass. He enlarged the 4th 'plate' hole. And then put the 4th pan pot of the preamp where the 'jack' once was. You should be able to find a 'plate' at your a major store like GUITAR CENTER. But that's a 50/50 chance. You'll probably do better with a 'site' like "Bass Parts Resource," online.
@MsRabbit07 Well, the preamp came from a used IBANEZ GSR200 bass. They're called the "PHAT-II" active bass boost. I've used these preamps before. I usually find a GSR on sale some where. I've got them used as much as $150.00. And as little as $75.00. So it varies. A brand new GSR200 bass runs in between $199.95 and $249.95.
You can get a 3 pot preamp. But those are usually harder to find. You'll probably find the 4 pot model sooner. The installer will probably move the stereo jack to the bottom-side of the bass.and put the the fourth pan pot where the jack 'was.'
The VM 70's Jazz Bass features the "Duncan Designed" pickups that are quite brilliant sounding. It gives this bass great definition and tone. No question, thw "VM 70"'s Bass" would be the right choice.
Also depends what sound you want too.. as each pickups will sound slightly different.. also think what style of music you're playing too.. thats why bands change pickups to create their own sound.
I mentioned the XTENDER key in reference to a 4-string bass. This enables the "E" string to drop down to a "D" string tone. The only time, really, this is used with a "B" string is with HEAVY METAL players! Bringing out a deep, rather inaudible, ground-shaking bass tone! As for the preamp? I "borrowed" a Phat-II IBANEZ preamp out of an GSR 200 bass. A bass I didn't mind sacrificing! 'Put it in the SQUIER! Turned out good!
Just got mine in yesterday and I can testify that this bass is awesome....Doing some upgrades and cosmetic changes to mine: 1. Finishing the neck with TRU-OIL to get it glossy. 2.Changing all hardware to black. 3.Adding 2 and 3 String retainers like fender American deluxe jazz. 4.Changing preamp to BASSMODS Might change the preamp to bartolinis later.
very informative video sir, just want to know, since you put a preamp in did you have to drill a hole to accomedate a jack output because its obviously not where the pan pots where now its in a different place from what i can see in the video.
Very nice informative video on this particular 5 sting bass. I had the 4 string like this 5 you have. I really don't care too much for them high end 2 to 7 thousand dollar basses. I think I'm going to get one of these this weekend. Thanks again Max.
Hello Max i appreciate and enjoy your bass videos... i recently bought this bass as a economical back up to my fender american deluxe5 and i also have a G&L .. and ive owned several fender MIM still got a 4.. but i must state that even though this bass is a good buy.. for the price and in this range... there is a big noticable difference in tone and playability (even with a preamp) to me i believe its the soft maple.. but there is a thinner tone and sound.. good bass to have as backup at best!!
I bought mine in a trip I did to Europe. I had to carry it through 4 countries during three weeks (England, Sweden, Finland and Russia). Worth the money and effort.
It's kind of hard to gauge. There doesn't seem to be a standard 5 string neck. I've ultra wide necks for 5's. And necks for 5's that were thin enough to compliment 4 string basses. This neck seems to fit my hands pretty comfortably. As long as a bass does that, I'm fine!
@bass1kitten Actually, a had a couple of IBANEZ GSR200 basses in my arsenal. I sacrificed one of them, used it's preamp. And put it in the 5string SQUIER. All you'll need is a nice preamp. Those very excellent Duncan-Designed pickups will bring out that sound you want. They're great!
Thank you for your review!! Been bouncing around the idea of getting this bass. I have owned the $1500 basses {Fender} I also had a Marcus Miller sig. Honestly, this bass is basically the same. Like you...trick it out a bit and you can have the SAME quality bass as the $1500 one.... Great job and thanks
@springboard1924 Thanks alot for watching! Actually, I borrowed the preamp so to speak. I had bought a used IBANEZ GSR200 bass out of a pawn shop. I put it's preamp into the SQUIER bass. I usually use ROTOSOUND Swing Bass strings.
Hi Max, recently bought a Squier vintage modified Jazz after watching your videos. It sounds beautiful! Even better than a MIM Fender Jazz I own. Thanks! Dave.
I appreciate you asking. But the "Highest-End" bass I've ever purchased is the 5string MARCUS MILLER 'Fender' Jazz Bass (Retail: $2,299.99)! The others I'd consider are a 'Spector' USA NS-5H2-EX Buckeye Burl Top 5-String Bass ($3,299.00), or a 'Musicman' Classic 5 string Bass (2079.00). I really don't go any further than that. There's so many 'High-end' basses out there! Checkout some of the UA-cam Gospel bassists, here! See and hear what they're playing! They'd be the best judge!
@felporocker You mean on this SQUIER bass 5? The spacing is wide but not as wide like the 4string basses. You'd have to be the judge on how you'd be comfortable with the spacing. Personal touch is always better.
The Duncan Designed pickups are known to be very responsive. If you're still not getting the sound you'd like? You think it's worth installing a preamp to make it "active?"
Hey, Earl. I just got my SX 5 String and Squier Vintage Modified Jazz basses back from my luthier today. He installed preamps in them, and they sound great. I got these preamps on eBay for $18.99 plus $6.00 shipping. My luthier was impressed by how good they sound. I'll upload some videos when I get a chance.
Ok great stuff max I appreciate that's, also about the control plate. If I purchased on with a 4 knob configuration instead of the stock 3 knob. Would it fit right on that same way. Looking at putting a Bart pre in mine
Nice playing there Maxproud. I tried this bass a while back and loved the feel of it. My only criticism was that the Low B was really too floppy sounding for my liking. Just wondering that when you added the preamp, did it make the B string a lot punchier? Thanks.
hay earl . A Big thanks for all the reviews ... A big fan from India !!! I m kinda confused abt picking up a bass .. a complete beginner here .. been playing the acoustic guitar for the past 5 years or so ... gotta crazy for basses !! Cant seem to choose between the Yamaha Rbx 170 or the squier Vintage ... price limit upto abt 400 $ ( the bass+ amp) . Loving the slap tone on all ur basses esp with this squier !!! and thanx for all the Vids .. they are really helpful ..keep em coming !!!!
I have a "pro" work on my basses. I'm not electronically inclined. I usually get a preamp off of EBAY. The cheaper kind from overseas in Asia. They're 40HZ in the bass.
nice review. I'm in the market for a mew bass. I'll consider this bass in my decision. I'm leaning towards the squire delux active jazz IV. Have any thoughts on that bass?
I don't do a particular brand. I search the internet, Ebay, etc., for different prices. I can say I've invested in preamps from the Seymore Duncan company quit a bit.
Hello Max, thanks for all your reviews, just love them! I have a candid question: do you find the sound and tone of the 5 strings version the same as the 4 strings version? (not talking about the B here, just the overall impression) Thanks!
I've always thought the 4 string models had a lot more personality sound wise. It has to be the thinner fret board. Sound waves travel a little higher I think. The 4 string has always sounded funkier to me !
Earl that bass sounds amazing. Question what type of pre amp (make & model) did you put in your Squier vintage modified bass. Also what type and brand of strings do you use? Thanks for a great post doc!
@felporocker The spacing isn't too close to the 4string bass. Not many 5stringers are spaced like the 4string. A few of the high-end, handmade models I've seen with that spacing that spacing. I think the SQUIER VM J-Bass 5 is good for funk-rock. There are several folks on UA-cam that would agree. Search UA-cam and you'll see this 4string version alot playing all kinds of music. Very versitile!
Right on man thanks... that's how I was leaning. I never tried a Classic Vibe so I wasn't sure about them. I tried a buddy's 4 string VM 70's and really liked it. I plan on buying a VM 5 string in a few days to hold me over while I wait for a special order I got coming from Dingwall. I also plan on modding this squier with an Audere pre-amp and a Babicz bridge. Any thought's on modding? Anyways thanks for your input....
What kind of pre-amp did you add to this sweet bass? Also, you mentioned to me in another message that you added a bass-extender key...does it handle the B string better? If so how much better? I love that the deluxe V is active, but I love the aesthetic design of the "vintage V" better, so I'll probablly do like you and add extras on it.
@11coopbass "Automatic Wedgie?" Wow, Coop! The preamp I had put in was one out of an IBANEZ GSR200. Caught one used and on sale, cheap. You still plan on getting this baby?! I don't think you'll be disappointed!
Yo, yo Dr. Maxproud! Man,....the tone coming off that bass now is a killer. Come on now, what type of preamp you put in that baby? Wow! I'm impressed. The tone of that bass would give us an Atomic Wedgie. (LOL!). Thanks man for the shout out. We are trying to help those young and mature musicians out there. Thank you, Sir! Coop' Bass "4" Life
I do a review on the RBX 170, did you catch it? If you're just starting out? The Yamaha RBX 170 is great for beginners. If you can stand it, Th Squier can wait! The 170 gives a light weight bass with a great passive sound. And a full double-octave (24 frets) scale.
Hey dude, was looking for an affordable first bass (Im a guitar player and wanted something for recording with) and didnt want to drop a ton of cash on a high end bass considering its my first, and its a secondary instrument...ended up buying a 4 string version of ths from a buddy after watching this vid...just wanted to say thanks for the reviews, I really enjoy your channel...never thought Id enjoy bass so much! Take it easy dude...
Yeah, of course. I'm not sure how to describe the sound, maybe I should upload a video. It just sounds flat, and doesn't have the 'attack' that most people's VMJs seem to have when slapped. The strings are fresh, too.
Bought this bass got it on sale for 200 floor model . threw some light gauged super slinky strings on it ... and i must say of all the basses I've owned (warwick to ibanez) this is the best 200 I've ever spent
'Two videos, not enough! LMAO! I didn't have to do a lot of adjusting. But with a new bass, always expect it not to be setup. You should love to put your personal touch on it anyway! I also suggest you have a pro calibration done, if need be. Thanks for watching my channel!
+maxproud just want to let you know that my tech guy did an absolutely phenomenal job with my upgrades....aguilar AG 5J -70 5 string pickups, aguilar Obp 3 preamp... they added a bass cavity for the 9v battery on the back, 2 concentric pots, two stacked knobs and a push pull pot....man this thing sounds great!!!!! squier with HULK SMASH tone and power....lol..thanks for your videos!!
got mine coming !!! will be here 8/6 i cant wait !!!! how was the action on it when you got it ? did you have to set the neck and string height?? and can we get one more vid of you playing it lol big fan love your stuff might send you a video of it when it gets here if i can learn to play something cool haha
@demidevil666 Sounds great! This seems to fit your needs. I hope it will fit "all" your needs. Quality doesn't have to be expensive. Hit me back when you get the 5string! I'd like to hear what you think.
I have one and it sounds amazing. Even though after a day later there appeared a crack in the back of the neck, the bass sounds and plays so good, I'm scared to get a replacement because I might loose the sound feel that I have now.
'Got 2 questions for you, if you don't mind? 1. When you say "sound good," do you mean 'brighter' or 'funkier.' 2. Do you know the difference in a 'passive' bass, and a bass that is 'active.?"
I own a Yamaha RBX 170 and it's damn good bass for the money.. varied tones and easy to play.. also stays in tune very well too. I've gigged with mine and it never went out of tune on me.. even on a hot stage. I'll be getting a Squier VM (Vintage Modified) JB (Jazz Bass) and PB (Precision Bass) soon though.. so get a Yamaha RBX170 first..
As I've stated to 'Oscar Harris.' I don't use a particular brand. I search the internet, Ebay, etc., for different prices. I can say I've invested in preamps from the Seymore Duncan company quit a bit. Sorry, I don't have any diagrams with them. I not really electronically inclined. I have a 'luthier' work on my instruments.
Well thanks you much! You made me me feel good inside. I always hoped I helped people. You take it easy, too!
Their the factory tuners except for the "B" string key. The bass arrived with that tuner key-head broken off. I started to send the bass back. But I remembered I had an extra SQUIER brand tuner. It was taken from unused bass neck. It fit and worked perfectly.
My "luthier" did the job. And yes, it was worked on just as you said it! Thanks for warching!

@maxproud Yes, I ment the squier. Thank you, you've been helpful
@jazzrockbassfreak Glad to hear that! This may turn out to be the most popular SQUIER brand bass!!
Go for it! I don't think you'll be disappointed.
@JohnnPurchasee Thanks for watching. And my I say, you have an awesome video editing style on your channel!!
@TheJpike You're welcome. Thanks for the compliment, and thanks for watching!

Alright! Glad to hear it.
just walked in the door with it. You are so right. LOVE IT! Yes I sure do. You are the man, my brother! Thank you, Sir! smiles
I bought mine in a trip I did to Europe. I had to carry it through 4 countries during three weeks (England, Sweden, Finland and Russia). Worth the money and effort.
Great!
Glad I could help! And you keep practicing!!

Thanks. Good luck with that!
@bordinco90 Of course it's good enough! The action usually is right of the shelf or out of the box.
Gracias. Este bajo es un aspecto muy agradable! ¿Se puede comprar una en su país?
Thank you for your review!! Been bouncing around the idea of getting this bass. I have owned the $1500 basses {Fender} I also had a Marcus Miller sig. Honestly, this bass is basically the same. Like you...trick it out a bit and you can have the SAME quality bass as the $1500 one....

Thanks for this video Max..
One question:
What do you think is best combo amp for this bass?
@CSthelevite The 4 connection holes would more likely be fine. The metal piece itself would be the concern.
Squier is quite the instrument! Hope you get it!
I like this Guy ,, I think you helped me make My decision to buy this Bass ,, thank you
Lemmy Kravitz You're welcome.
Those pickups are great, in my opinion. You really don't need to change a thing unless you want to.
Thanks. I try to pass on knowledge. I hope in turn "knowledge" will come back to me.
Hi Max, recently bought a Squier vintage modified Jazz after watching your videos. It sounds beautiful! Even better than a MIM Fender Jazz I own. Thanks! Dave.
You're very welcome Dave! I'm glad it worked out for you!
I'm glad to hear it! If this bass "delivers" for you? That's all that matters!
@Mowac I checked it out on your channel. You really "Pimped" that bass!! Great!
Bro the moment you started playing I had to like your video :)
awesome!
Thanks.
Hey Max P!!!! I just pick up this bass and I really love it. I'm thinking about adding a preamp with an active/passive switch. Any suggestions?
The only ones I've ever used were the "JZ3" by AUDERE. Or the "BEQ12-34AP" by BASS MODS! I lean toward the BASS MODS a little more than the AUDERE!
@alboblin Glad for you , man! It's a solid and economical bass. Play it in "Good Health."
@bordinco90 Possible. Thanks for the idea.
I did a review on the "white" version of that bass. It's in my video collection. Good bass. Especially if you like a full, wide neck.
thank you for the great vid. awesome playing too
Thanks.
Good to here that bro! It will pay off in being a great investment!
I have a "pro" work on my basses. I'm not electronically inclined. I usually get a preamp off of EBAY. The cheaper kind from overseas in Asia. They're 40HZ in the bass.
@Nullll1111 'Bout the same. Neck spacing is wider, but that really doesn't effect the "B" too much!
I think I got it. Thanks for responding.
nice review.
All right, it confirmed my impression after watching dozens of tests of the both models. Thanks for your feedback!
Earl that bass sounds amazing. Question what type of pre amp (make & model) did you put in your Squier vintage modified bass. Also what type and brand of strings do you use? Thanks for a great post doc!

Right on man thanks... that's how I was leaning. I never tried a Classic Vibe so I wasn't sure about them. I tried a buddy's 4 string VM 70's and really liked it. @11coopbass "Automatic Wedgie?" Wow, Coop! The preamp I had put in was one out of an IBANEZ GSR200.
Caught one used and on sale, cheap. You still plan on getting this baby?! I don't think you'll be disappointed!
@maxproud thanx man and great videos by the way
Yo, yo Dr. Maxproud! Man,....the tone coming off that bass now is a killer. Come on now, what type of preamp you put in that baby? Wow! I'm impressed. Earl just came for my last 2000 gig this is the best passive jazz bass on the Planet
Beautiful!
Hey Kuuks! We seem to think alike. Thanks for watching.
Had the bassmod preamp installed in my squier vintage modified jazz bass v today, great preamp love it...My bass is a monster now....lol
Thanks, bro!
Not a big difference. But a preamp does seem to make your bass a bit "punchier" anyway, right? Did you try to adjust that "B" string when you got it?
I do a review on the RBX 170, did you catch it? If you're just starting out? The Yamaha RBX 170 is great for beginners. If you can stand it, Th Squier can wait! The 170 gives a light weight bass with a great passive sound. And a full double-octave (24 frets) scale.

@TheJpike I would think the '70's would be the ticket. You could no doubt get a deeper tone with the Vintage "70's bass.
Yeah, of course. I'm not sure how to describe the sound, maybe I should upload a video. It just sounds flat, and doesn't have the 'attack' that most people's VMJs seem to have when slapped. The strings are fresh, too.
What kind of preamp did you go with because it sounded much beefier! I love it man!
@agroben got one for sale on ebay now, I have modified it already they are good bases. The are quality built to!
Thanks your the greatest
Bought this bass got it on sale for 200 floor model . threw some light gauged super slinky strings on it ... and i must say of all the basses I've owned (warwick to ibanez) this is the best 200 I've ever spent

'Two videos, not enough! LMAO! I didn't have to do a lot of adjusting. But with a new bass, always expect it not to be setup. You should love to put your personal touch on it anyway! I also suggest you have a pro calibration done, if need be. Thanks for watching my channel!
great video!! I was wandering what accessories you needed, besides the preamp, to upgrade from a passive to an active?
The preamp is basically it. Everything else is just personal improvements. Better pickups, hardware, etc.
Ok...I have the the aguilar Obp3 preamp and aguilar AG 70 jazz pickups.
So happy for you brother! So glad it worked out!
I had no issues with it. You shouldn't either. School me on something? Does the 18volt over the 9volt matter soundwise?
got mine coming !!! will be here 8/6 i cant wait !!!! how was the action on it when you got it ? did you have to set the neck and string height?? and can we get one more vid of you playing it lol
big fan love your stuff might send you a video of it when it gets here if i can learn to play something cool haha
@demidevil666 Sounds great! This seems to fit your needs. I hope it will fit "all" your needs. Quality doesn't have to be expensive. Hit me back when you get the 5string! I'd like to hear what you think.
I have one
and it sounds
amazing. Even
though after a
day later there
appeared a crack
in the back of the
neck, the bass
sounds and plays
so good, I'm
scared to get
a replacement
because I might
loose the sound
feel that I have
now.
I don't have it anymore. Yeah, I'd buy another one if I chose to. Good bass.
@Zackr27 I got that one too. 'Gotta video on it. I put a preamp in the bass also.
By the way, I just got my first SX6 vintage to match my Squier Vintage Modified J-Bass, man what a beast that instrument is!!!!
Not bad at all! Enjoy!
@thewrestlebox No problem.
